The "sponge" was created due to the countless tiny bubbles of hydrogen gas, liberated in the midst of a metal with no structural integrity. Think of it as analogous to foaming at the top of a soft drink. The gallium atoms interfere with the aluminum's ability to form a metal lattice, thus permitting H2O to interlace with what is essentially atomic aluminum. The resulting reaction is 2 Al + 6 H2O = 2 Al(OH)3 + 3 H2. Nate and Callie, thanks for the video and keeping us challenged and entertained.

so what is the 'accidental discovery'? Pretty sure all of this went how you expected it would. Interesting to know that gallium has this effect on aluminum too though, if anyone wants to see a crazy aluminum reaction look up NileRed's video reacting mercury with aluminum. It's amazing, one of the weirdest reactions I've ever seen, especially for what it just a metal on metal contact.

What was the chemical? Hydrous Gallium-Aluminium (now called Galluminium) was my first guess, but there were gallium beads. You had Hydrogen bubbles and water naturally splits into Hydrogen and Hydroxide ions, so... Water + Galluminium = Hydrogen + Gallium + ... Aluminium Hydroxide?

Ok Grant, this one is going to be tough. Let's see what happens when you melt iron sulfide (pyrite or fools gold) into a mold. It's going to be tough because of the ionic bonds but I want to see what it would look like after it cooled.

Hm, it melts at 1177~1188 °C which might be more than they can handle, but they have done the ~800 °C salt. But then still… close to 400 °C more? :(
