The saddest one I ever saw, was when Archie woke up in bed, and he rolled over to wake Edith up. After a few times of talking to her, and jiggling her a bit, he came to the realization, that his beloved wife of over 50 years, had died in her sleep. I cried like a Baby, and I'm no wimpy guy, but I think that episode made almost all of America shed a few tears. Archie's favorite chair that he sat in every night when he got home from work, is actually in The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. That show was that iconic. It's a piece of Americana. Jean and Carroll were obviously brilliant comedic actors but they were even more compelling to watch during their occasional dramatic scenes. All in the Family was one of those rare gems that could have you laughing yourself silly one moment and crying the next. The show is known for its controversial topics and unvarnished dialog, but the true genius is in the family members themselves and how relatable they are. Many of us grew up in a family just like the Bunkers, and watching each character evolve over the years was such a treat. It remains one of the best and most memorable television shows in history.

The one scene of any show which always stuck with me was when Archie came home alone after Edith's funeral. Carroll O'Connor nailed the shock and grief of a newly widowed person. “Edith’s” voice in real life was rather low. She gave this character an amazingly memorable voice. It was all her. She was a very sweet lady, and very much expressed compassion and kindness. I use to look up to her as a young girl kid watching the re runs back when they were on tv. Edith’s mannerisms and her wobbly kinda presence… were adorable. As an actress though.. fan-bloody-tastic. She was brilliant.

The serious one about Edith and church had to do with the fact that one of her friends, who was a transvestite man, was murdered during the Christmas season. The character Beverly LaSalle mad three appearances on the show and was introduced as a passenger in the taxi archie was driving whose life he saved. Archie did not know the person was a guy in drag and gave the man mouth to mouth. This sparked Archie's homophobia and a debate with Meathead about human life. At the end of the episode Archie accepts Beverly for who he is. In the second episode where Beverly appears Edith and Beverly become better acquaintances. In the third episode Mike and Beverly are brutally attacked as they walk to the store because of Beverly being a transvestite. Mike is hospitalized and Beverly is killed. The first episode with Beverly is called Archie the Hero, the second is Beverly Rides Again and the third is a two parter called Edith's Crisis of Faith.

When Edith died in 1980 (even though it was off screen) we were all devastated. She and Archie had become part of our own families in a way so it was like losing a family member to us young adults who had grown up watching the show for 9 years. From 8 years of All In The Family until the 1st episode of the 2nd season of Archie Bunker's Place she was a staple in our homes via the tv. Unfortunately for us Jean Stapleton was ready to move on from the part. She did 5 episodes of the new show during the 1st season and then she was gone.

Actually, that happened in the subsequent series, "Archie Bunker's Place" in the premiere of the second season. All in the Family's creator Norman Lear actually called her to ask if she was OK with Edith's "death." She had no problem with it, since it was only a fictional character, but Lear was quite emotional about doing it.

The lesson or moral was what All in the Family was about during a controversial time. The old values and views of Archie (and his friends) clashed with a recession, equal rights and racial acceptance, and Edith seemed to always find a silver lining to end the show on.

If you see a lot of episodes of the show you find that she's largely the sidekick who is understated while Archie is the big personality, so when she has a central moment it stands out more by contrast. With clips like this you lose that sense. o

My 2 favroite sitcom of all time are, WKRP in Cincinnati a ground breaking show like All in the Family. In the 70s there was a WHO concert in Cincinnati where a bunch of concert goers got killed in a rush for seats. WKRP did an episode weeks later about what happened and payed tribute. Full episodes are on KZread for free. The Turkey drop episode is classic tv. Or watch the short clip WKRP in Cincinnati Pink Floyd. They played modern now classic music on the show as a big part of the show. The other is TAXI. Watch any clip with Danny Devito or Christopher Lloyd.

You guys were great to watch with this. Seriously. Jean is def fantastic. She's so unique. Watching y'all here, I kept thinking that you'd love her in "Michael". With John Travolta and William Hurt. And a fantastic soundtrack by Randy Newman. Adapted from a book by Nora Roberts. Ps. This is one of only 2 or 3 really old shows, pre 80s, that I still love to watch. More actually.

There are 2 you should react to. The Beverly LaSalle trilogy, very funny and heartbreaking. and the 2-part episode where Edith is attack by a rapist, again, funny, upsetting but these shows are incredible. They addressed some truly forbidden subjects at the time and really taught people through the characters we all became to love; we were so invested! TV GOLD....

Edith and Archie are a great love story of for the ages of two ordinary people trying to do their best to navigate their way through rocket speed societal change while maintaining a functioning relationship and raising an extended family. My favorite moment for the two is when Archie is suffering from hemorrhoids, Edith encourages him to eat the salad she made because he needed more ruffage in his diet. Arch replies with "ruffage, I don't need any more ruffage, what I need is some smooth-age!) I havn't been able to go to the bathroom since without having a little smile on my face while agreeing with Arch's sentiment. Who couldn't use a little more smooth-age in their life?

I was born in 1963 and I must say this show did so much for race relations back then because it showed you how ridiculous Archie was and by the end of the show, you saw how we had more in common than differences. Great show!

The videos where she dies is so sad. Then the one where Archie finally goes into their bedroom after she dies and he let's out his feelings get the tissues 🤧 and there is one where she is raped. But to me the best show is when two of their friends drop by after going to hawaii and he goes to the bar with Archie and hits on a girl And his wife is back at the house with Edith and tells edith they're having problems. When the two leave, archie reaches over and takes a hold of edith's hand. Being raised on the shows and the craziness of Archie. And the way he acts like he don't really respect Edith when he acts like this the above scenes He really shows his love for her and it just warms your heart.

Carol O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were nothing like the people they portrayed. They were absolutely brilliant in creating these characters. Carol O'Connor was the opposite of Archie politically and a gentleman. Jean was a strong independent woman and nothing at all like Edith. Genius acting.

In one episode, Archie received a phone call from someone calling to take a bet from him for a horse race. Edith picked up the phone to intercept the conversation. Years earlier, Archie had nearly ruined there marriage through running up terrible gambling debts. Edith was upset. Archie asked, "Edith, Who was that?" Edith replied, "Glow-Worm" in the Fifth! {Meaning the bookie recommended he bet on a horse called Glow-Worm in the fifth race). After finishing the sentence, Edith Slapped Archie Across His Face. Then she explained how he had almost ruined the marriage years ago, and that he had promised that he would never again gamble his paycheck away.
