I would argue it's a related, delayed celebration. Developement takes a while and the idea to do this was probably put on the bucket list over a year ago.

Zetterstrand's new painting's being "darker" is absolutely just because he had more control. The original versions of all the paintings already in the game are extremely moody and use a lot of dark space. Notch brightened them up and simplified them when adding them way back in the day. These new ones are unfiltered Z, and would be what they all looked like if added now.

It's kinda good that there's some contrast. If you're trying to make a darker space, having darker options is useful. Minecraft has way more dark materials now than when the paintings were originally introduced.

Phoenix, you don't sound boring, in fact you sound very comforting which is very different from other loud, annoying KZreadrs, I quite like it

Honestly to solve the selecting a painting issue, I think it would be really neat to be able to switch between those of the same size by right clicking one you place with something like a brush....... .......or just adding a UI when you right click it like how you can edit signs, that would be easier

Or add a new crafting block like an easel or something where you put a blank canvas ( replaces the painting, same crafting recipe) and it opens a stonecutter-like GUI where you can choose your painting.

I think paintings should be like finding banner patterns. You can make as many as you want of that specific one once you find it in a chest. Because it doesnt make sense that each player is somehow painting all the exact same complex paintings.

I personally think the 15 new paintings by Zetterstrand are the best so far. They're a lot more polished than the old ones, but also feel more fitting than those 5 slightly less new ones. And they're also just really good art.

Honestly, the only one I found to be not fitting at all was the villagers one, that one is like, realistic but chibi? Didn't like it at all, all the rest is pretty good even the other 4 special ones

I like how Phoenix uploaded at almost the exact same minute Minecraft uploaded their video about the paintings.

Phoenix, I think the reason that a lot of the new paintings are unique or underutilized block ratios is to make it easier to cycle through them, which is probably why there is only one small painting in the new batch. Also I think the reason the paintings look melancholic is probably in part because they are almost all higher pixel ratios, a lot of the small paintings are also kind of the same way but because their smaller and no one can tell what they are trying to depict no one really notices

Although I do love the new artist and their paintings, I’ve done several essays and reports for art classes on Kristoffer Zetterstrand and am happy to see him back! Edit: no way peenix really gave this comment a heart, thank ya man Edit edit: well atleast I got a screenshot before it was gone 😔

I think part of the reason the new paintings are a bit darker is because of the game itself. When the original paintings came out, the lighting in Minecraft was darker. Think about how lights worked in say the alpha days. The blocks had hard lighting edges, and beyond that it would be pitch black. The paintings had to be brighter or they wouldn’t be seen at all. Now though, with the better and smoother lighting of modern Minecraft, you can have darker pictures without sacrificing quality.

I think adding these new paintings really shows how mojang actually sees that there are some areas that need some attention and just general changes.

I have a sneaky suspicion that they've known for a while, but couldn't find an artists that could match the vibe of the originals. SO in the end they probably just said fuck it and commissioned Zetterstrand. Which may have happened a while ago btw, making 15 new painting probably took him a lot of work and time

Im so excited. Zetterstrand is one of my favorite artists ever, ive been wanting more of his work to be added to the game.

They could keep the old method but add a "painter" (sort of like brewing stand) (painting stand?) where you could make paintings depending on what item you feed it, just a suggestion on the off chance Mojang actually sees this

​@@D6ARI mean, music is all about experimentation with sounds and styles to innovate, like BDG and Tom Cardy collabing even if their only common thing is "haha funny music man" If the two (and mojang) wanted they could totally do it!

The original new 5 are, in my personal opinion, far better looking than all of these 15 new ones. I welcome more paintings in different styles, especially relating to the game itself. I wish we got a painting of maybe Ender Dragon or some mobs from recent updates.

Dude those 5 early ones by Sarah were also very damn good. They are more brighter and present a lighter mood. I mean sure I still prefer zetterstand's art over her because he is the og but that doesn't necessarily mean Sarah's art is bad. They both have different art styles and present unique styles in their own way.... Also I hope there still is a chance to bring back c418 as well..

3:45 there is a way, if you make the wall of a specific size, not a block large or smaller, you will get paintings that fit the wall just right.

I like the new paintings. They look like they might go well in a cool castle or an old manor type build.

i hope we get more paintings by different artist, so they have different styles, which would be really cool.

I think it could make sense to have some paintings be like armor trims where you have to find them and can then make copies. And have the rest be craftable with various items. 50 individual painting items could be excessive though with the pre existing inventory issues.

I didn't know zetterstrand made the 15 new ones! I saw the announcement from another source, and I thought "Wow, these ones actually look like they fit with the games painting style, Mojang actually took notes" But now I've seen why and its because its literally just the same guy lol

Finally they updated the most important and op mob in the game, the trader llama 🙌

Thank you for sounding "boring", Phoenix (it's not actually boring at all) As a non-native speaker, I literally do not understand a single word the loud and fast ones say, not to mention how it's impossible to relax while watching those I honestly think saying your format is a lot better is an understatement

For me there is nothing wrong with the paintings looking different. It's suggesting that in-universe, the paintings were done by different people. Either that or Steve is very good at drawing in many different styles lol.

What is quite sad about the new paintings, is that they are all pretty big in size. I think we need more small ones for good design - not all the buildings that need a painting are of a big size.

Lets hope they add data driven paintings. Would be a dream come true. That's what i think the sneak peak was. Multiple custom ones. Rather than the whole thing.

As I looked at them, I really thought “well, okay. So they’re kinda just replicating the style of the old paintings like with the iconic flame texture.” But then you immediately say that Zetterstrand is back.

The old paintings aren't the originals, they were scaled down and digitally edited by someone at Mojang. If you were to replace the classic paintings with their original versions they would fit right in with the 15 new ones.

with how Microsoft treated C418 I'm AMAZED that they brought back Zetterstrand

My first reaction was "woah, those look really good and in the style of the originals, almost like the original guy did them!" and turns out, yeah, that's exactly what happened

I love the more moody atmosphere of the new paintings

I like the different feels of the new paintings! The five bedrock ones look like they could've been painted by villagers. And the fifteen made by Kristoffer have a good contrast to the older ones, making them feel unique.

Now we need 19 more paintings. For... reasons...

There needs to be, 14 more paintings!

It's because Notch just copy n pasted minecraft items onto the original artist artwork, notch is gone and the original artist is back

The new paintings look amazing! I do agree with the idea that, now that we have a bunch of new paintings, we need an actual way to select them.

2:00 Tbf, Lena is an amazing artist and I’m so glad she’s been making music for the game. I just wish they’d come to an agreement with c418, cause he’s such an amazing artist as well. The only problem is Microsoft is greedy and needs to own the full rights to everything new that’s added to Minecraft, which c418 won’t agree with (it’s his art stop being greedy Microsoft!)

I see some people mentioning paintings as collectible (like armour trims), and that would be really cool. For the time beeing, there exists a mod for that: Invariable Paintings.

Fun fact: with that many paintings now, we need a ui interaction for it, which will give the fetching table finally a use

I like new paintings way more than the old ones for some reason. The colors seem somehow to fit better.

I like all the different visuals between the paintings tbh. There's always been some oddballs here and there in style or color, so really I don't feel any sort of tonal dissonance between the newer and older ones all that much. I mean just compare the heaven and hell one to the spider.

i'd like to see the new ones each be collectible through different things such as fishing, excavation, structures etc. I like the direction they took with armor trims and think they should go that route.

The painting he said looked like a portal wasn't just any portal - it's The City At The Edge Of Forever.

I love the recent developments so much. Lena Raine (who has - in my opinion - made better, but less iconic music than C418, so a good replacement, though I’d still love him back) has made what is probably the best music disc in the game, along with some other ambient pieces, two discs from Aaron Cherof (who composed a wonderful 1.20 soundtrack), and more ambient pieces from Aaron Cherof and a completely new composer, Kami Tanioka. As well as this, the legend is back with FIFTEEN new paintings. 1.21 is a really good update

I really love these 15 new paintings! I think the color palettes and the compositions are just better compared to the old ones and and 5 new ones

About the last remark, there are items in the creative menu that let you choose a specific painting. Search "1x1" or "2x1" or anything similar, and you'll find them yourself. But if you mean survival, then I don't know.

the painting update is another example of "New content" being in a much higher quality and almost different texture pack than the og game. compare a pig to a sniffer and you will see what i mean

The flame in the painting at the bottom left has a shadow. As you know, light sources don't have shadows, they cast shadows.

I’ve had a problem with the abstract, water painting of the villagers- but, if there are still another 5 to be revealed (20 total), then they could have a similar style. That would make it work 👍 (That is; unless, when someone said 15 more paintings, they meant 15 total)

Minecraft is finally adding more variant for things like the wolfs, trims, paintings, etc. Im actually curious with what they plan in the future

To be fair, most paintings in the real world are pretty melancholic

could probably make a new function block for painting selecting similar to how the loom works. Input a standard painting item and then choose from the full list to change the item to that specific painting

There's also the fire, water, earth, and air paintings that are technically in the game, but go unused. I hope we get those at some point.

If you want to make paintings with more varying artstyles, at least make them consistent with the rest. These 3 are not consistent with the other paintings at all.

​@@LugiDergX I don't see the necessary difference between paintings in a gallery and paintings in a video game, usually that argument is used to excuse fantastical or illogical situations, but you seem to be useing it for the opposite which seems ill advised. Things can't be diverse if they are consistently the same, it seems like an oxymoron.

Imagine on the 19th anniversary of minecraft they will add 19 more paintings, meaning we'd have 69 paintings, it likely won't happen but it is a fun thought

Absolutely love the new ones, hope they don't change them

We probably find the new paintings darker because they are brand new, once we get used to them it will be like nothing changed at all
