We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of slightly terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful delusion. Set in a drug-fueled, retro-futuristic city in an alternative history 1964 England, you’ll have to blend in with its other citizens, who don’t take kindly to people who don’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.
It's a game of paranoia and survival, where you must balance your need to survive with your need to escape. You'll have to gather food and resources, find shelter, and ultimately escape before time runs out.
It's very similar to a roguelike, in that the world is procedurally generated every time you play, and the challenges you face will not always be the same.
Welcome to Wellington Wells, you saucy minx.

What a wonderful Kickstarter video; original, informative, immersive, and even drops a few hints regarding the backstory/gameplay. Some examples: 1. It's evident that Jack Worthy (aka. 'Uncle Jack') and the rest of Wellington Wells share a collective amnesia of the German occupation, thanks to an unhealthy dose of repression and Joy (which is shown-and advertised!- to have amnesic properties). Just what was the 'Very Bad Thing' that traumatized an entire city into drug-addled manic-depressive mimes? Participation in the Holocaust (human experimentation?), perhaps, or something to do with the lack of children in the streets? Also, the lunacy seems to be limited to this particular community, if we take Jack's words at face value, but who knows if the entirety of Britain is in the same 'cheerful' state? 2. We have our first implication of an 'endgame' (society eventually collapses), thus putting us on a timer to get out or get lynched. Already, there are cracks in the seams due to the existence of feral Wellies in the outskirts that attack anything that moves. Is permanent mental instability and violent insanity the consequence of chronic Joy abuse? 3. Other Downers besides the main character will be present in the main game as friendly NPCs, and interestingly show that memory recall is indeed a symptom of 'Downerism'. The Sergeant seems to know the player character from the past, and implies that the Germans were taking people (children?) to coerce obedience from the populace and for some other mysterious purpose, which the latter somehow avoided. Also note the pink ribbon on the Sergeant's wrist; is it a memento of a loved one, such as a young daughter? 4. Taking Joy seems to be one of the easiest ways to 'blend in' with the rest of the Wellies, though the developers bluntly state it's an absolute last resort. Currently, a Joy overdose inflicts amnesia on the player and changes the city layout, putting you back at square one. However, could other, far worse side effects appear as the game progresses further in development, punishing abuse?

The Black Butler Did indeed fall in love with that little clip. But the amount of story questions it brought up is unbearable. Maybe Persey is one of their kids that the Germans took away to make sure they "stayed quiet" and the other guy was telling the main character that they wouldnt hurt him so Persey is probably held captive somewhere. Its killing me I NEED TO KNOW!!

I personally think that it's 1984 combined with Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. 1984 because of an omnipresent oppressive government. Brave New World because everyone is taking Soma Pills, Joy in this game. Fahrenheit 451 because people are ignorant and are too obsessed with anything that entertains them to care. I think Fahrenheit 451 combines both 1984 and Brave New World into a concept that seems a bit unoriginal, but I'd still say that it's good because it has some points not discussed in either. Can't wait to see how this game will turn out. I'm a little skeptical that this won't turn out well, but who knows. I wish it the best.

Uncle Jack is such a memorable and iconic character. I still have some of his lines pop up in my head from time to time! Loved simply listening to the radio or tvs in the game just to hear his skits. They did wonders for the worldbuilding and were very entertaining! Julian Casey played the hell out of that role!
Jack: You're laughing. People are not taking their joy, and you're laughing? Let me get this straight, you think downers not taking their joy is funny? Jason: I do, and i'm tired of pretending it's not.

Holy shit - this guy can act! =O Especially 1:46 until 1:51 might be my favorite moment (dat instant laugh). Alongside 0:40, as well as 1:11 until 1:27 PS: I'm really excited to see what the secret of this Uncle Jack turns out to be - who he really is, basically. It does not appear as if he's really taking the drug - to me his whole acting and the directions you gave him _(the actor)_ beforehand come across as if Jack Worthy is just *playing the part* (for TV - further brainwashing etc). Is an even bigger organization behind all this? Controlling it (& maybe _indeed_ forcing Jack to take his "Joy")? What are their final motivations? Conducting some kind of experiment in preparation for .....? Or Mr. Worthy actually is the sole main "antagonist" after all... So many questions. So much anticipation. Story, please don't suck! =)

I love how this guy really embraces Jack. He’s a riot. Lolol!!
I downloaded the free trial, and after the 45 minutes I was so hooked I immediately bought the game. Even though We Happy Few is in its alpha stage, it is a delightfully fun game. I can't wait to get up tomorrow and explore some more!
"I'm affraid we come to the end of our time" Brilliant there.
One of the best made kickstarter videos out there, meta, concise, and nice way to include the credits for the game!
This would be a Brilliant Twilight Zone Episode.
I know it's been a long while since the alpha/beta version of this game was released, so this video, but I still want to say that this is perhaps the most creative and awesome Kickstarter video I've seen. The acting is awesome and else, I could re-Watch this video over and over again. I know the full version of the game is soon to be released and I seriously can't wait! :D
Been going over these videos again after the official release. I've been intrigued with this game since the pre-Alpha. The storyline, from what I've seen of it, is really a masterpiece.
I love Jack
And now. It’s all over. It was a long but amazing ride.
Is that "Joy pill" at 0:54 a Omega 3 pill?
Uncle Jack’s constant inappropriate laughter is perfect in this context.
I'm really excited for this game! With so many atmospheric and thematic survival games on the market these days, I truly think this one has the most potential with Subnautica as a close second, mostly because of the unique and well implemented aesthetic. The problem, for me, with a lot of sandbox survival games is that there isn't much to do besides staying alive. I, for example, loved the idea of Sir You are being Hunted, but when I played it a few years back, it was simply a continuous singular objective of "explore, feed, drink, hide and repeat (but not specifically in that order)". Something like doing quests or errands for citizens of Wellington Wells (to build up relationships and connections with specific citizens for example) would be an awesome addition in my opinion. I also hope We Happy Few can find a nice balance between making a randomly generated world and a world which doesn't feel randomly generated.
3:46 Well god damn!
Brilliant! Perfect acting and vibe guys! Definetely looking forward to the final game!
Man , can't wait for this game to come out...love the style of it and the idea of something horrifying or terrible happening or an group or whatever it is controlling an city...
Compulsion Games My god, Julian Casey's acting is just SO good! Truly phenomenal!
Hope that it will come to the consoles! Really dig the artstyle and general feeling of this sick, dystopian place :)
This looks absolutely brilliant. I'm so thankful that there are still developers out there that see gaming as an artistic medium and not just a cash grab. As someone who has dealt with depression for most of their life I really appreciate seeing these kinds of themes being addressed via all sorts of mediums. It plants the seed and helps to grow awareness of what is possibly one of the biggest issues we face as a modern society. Or maybe I read it wrong and you just made a silly game. Either way it looks fab. You guys seem like you'd be right at home doing some sort of collaboration with Wreden / Pugh (of Stanley Parable fame). There'd be potential for something magical there I bet.
The first thing i said to myself: "Yes, Bioshock is going to continue!" ^^ And this is the biggest compliment i can say
That actor is fantastic!
One can never have enough Orwellian Dystopia, this is gonna be a blast, jolly good show!
One thing I'd like to see in this game is that in addition to escaping from the city, you could also try to save the other people living in it by trying to convince them not to take Joy anymore so that they can get back to normal (kind of like what happens in "Logan's Run," if you've ever seen that movie). I'd also like to see if you can have some kind of "boss battle" with Uncle Jack in the game. I'd like to see how he'd look in animation when he's not on a television screen.
This made my day, wish I could afford to back.
this KS-video is so fuckin awesome. good job compulsion. good job.
The JOY that he was talking about was kinda like the JOY pill from game called Lisa the painfull RPG
Not sure why this game intrigues me, but it is the first game I ever help fund. Good luck and cannot wait to play.
This is what Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight is for. Make it as amazing as you envision, I can't wait to see where you take it!
I thought they were gonna start chasing him with shovels, forcing Joy down his throat.
The guy playing Jack is great.
I feel this is like Dishonored and Bioshock combined. This game is very similar yet so different; i like it!

Something about this game reminds me of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Especially with the "Joy pill" mechanic.

The actor who plays Uncle Jack is Awesome. Great casting decision.
Favourite Kickstarter video ever
Lol "Be on my stool! ...If anybody needs me."
This games marketing is great. Really. The best marketing I've seen for a game.
Omg I love Uncle Jack! He's such an interesting character!
This game has the potential of being on BioShock's level in terms of storyteling and atmosphere, good job Compulsion.
It's crazy watching this and seeing the game finally finished
Seems like Jack Nicholson's Joker would fit right in. From what I have seen so far the game is good. I loved Contrast and this game looks very promising.
+Compulsion Games, I like that you named your protagonist Arthur Hastings, after Arthur Hastings from Agatha Christie's Poirot mystery novels.
btw I love the calm music in the background and the music at the end
"Peculiar expectations about how you should behave." OH! You mean here! ENGLAND! Yes yes. Oh yes.
I love it. British actors, Amazing map and great people models. I would suggest adding some optimisation however I am aware this is Pre, Pre, Pre alpha. So far I love the game and cannot wait to get my hands on it!
The Bioshock feels
I just listened again realized that Jack’s starts to echo when he’s advertising the Joy pill. Don’t know if it’s significant, but it’s interesting because I think it has to with the hallucinatory nature of the drug
But Compulsion, what if we're not downers....but something much, much worse? ....What if we're rage?
Even though that this looks like it already has a bit of a storyline, I wouldn't mind seeing another version of this game with a well-built linear storyline with a few of the survival aspects removed, since I keep thinking of a wacky version of The Order 1886 when I see this game, lol. Good luck to you devs, you're well on your way to make an awesome game. I hope it brings you many healthy dollars!
It would be so cool if uncle jack was the final boss in his own Studio. That would be so cool!
I think you forgot to put the link to the kickstarter in the description.

Compulsion Games Since you're asking for feed back I'm going to give my two cents. Maybe don't have the eyes above the NPC's heads. I feel like it takes away from the whole paranoia feel you're going for. If the eyes weren't present, you'd be looking at every single citizen and thinking if they're on to you. But with the little detection thing over their head, you know whether or not someones suspicious. Just an idea. I hope you take it into account.

Master of Commentary this is really a great idea, I usually do prefer for more minimal HUD in games, such is disabling enemy's HP bar and damage counter. In this case, you'd really need to look out for the tiniest details in people's action.
@CompulsionGames
9 жыл бұрын
Master of Commentary Siddhattha Hartono Yep, it's a good point. We'd like to have it as something you can turn on or off. The biggest reason it is there is that giving a player feedback about what they're doing is very, very important. If we did it all through animation, we'd have to make it overwhelmingly clear how angry people are through their gestures and voices alone - and that's not as easy as you think. So, we'll keep working on it, and hopefully get it to the stage where we can turn it off by default (but we'll keep the option, as it'll help people who can't hear as well and some people will also still prefer it). Hope that answers your question :)
@lamepuppet5954
9 жыл бұрын
Compulsion Games Thanks. I'm very exited about this game and will definitely pick it up. I hope you do find a way to make that system work, because that is the main reason this game intrigued me. Disclaimer: this is just me shouting ideas. With the animations, don't have them be very clear. Again, it adds to the paranoia, and the feel that if someone gives you the slightest look, you'll become very uneasy, and adding to the tension you want to build in this world that you've created. But I understand that some people may not like that, so maybe keep the subtle animations, but just have an option to keep the detection meter off/on. That way, if people want to feel true paranoia, they'll turn it off, but for people who aren't very fond of that idea, or just aren't that good at pointing that stuff out, they can just turn it on and it'll be all good. Even if you don't go the route I suggested, thanks for taking my idea into consideration. You guys rock, and I hope your game is successful.
It looks like Uncle Jack will be like the Joker from Arkham Asylum as in popping up on the tv screens around the city .
I do not envy the actor playing Uncle Jack. His face has got to hurt like nothing I've ever felt.
