When I was a kid I saw a Basenji in a pet store, they let me take him in the play room. He got excited playing and yodeled, freaked me and the clerk out! Neither one of us knew they did this!😹

I love it! When I was a little kid we got a Basenji puppy with it cute little wrinkled up face. Later on when we came home from school she would yodel for us. This brings back memories! What a beautiful dog!

Our female wouldn’t make a noise for the longest time. Now her yodel is like a broken basenji toy with the battery dying. Ragnar has a good strong yodel but is stingy with delivering them!

@@Cora_ragnar_freya oh ill be sure to work on that with the next one and my current one. My dog has started to hesitate when it comes to running outside, but the back door is where we take her out, so she runs out thinking she is on the leash

People try to convert basenji into a toy breed for urbanites. Just like Siberian huskies.

I had a girl Basenji. There are a good dog to have if you want all of your shoes chewed up, the baseboards chewed off, your wooden kitchen table chewed all the way around the edges and when you take them to the vet they have to wear a muzzle because the vet is afraid of getting mauled. We all loved her very much but those dogs really shouldn't be domesticated. They were introduced to the US in the 50's, I got mine in 1986 from my best friend that bred them. They come from Africa and are used to chase large wild animals, if I remember right they are related to the Dingo. They can be very dangerous, don't bend down to it, it will attack you. My dog's dad was very vicious, when he walked into the room you just sat there and let him smell you. Don't reach at him at all unless you want to lose your hand. These dogs were not trained to be that way, it's in their nature, instinct.

Sherrie whoa you certainly didn’t have a good experience. My basenjis are sweethearts. I don’t have issues with chewing, but we made sure to put plenty of training while they were puppies to redirect them to appropriate chew things and we found having a variety of chews for them is essential as they get bored easily so we need to have loads of options. So sorry to hear about your experience! I do find their close linage to the dingo is a contributor to tough training but we just came to terms with them not being off leash dogs (bc they won’t master recall). Otherwise their personality of being stubborn while frustrating just makes us love them even more! Having a second one now has helped a ton too, they play together all day long and tire each other out, and now we can feel good about leaving them alone because they have each other for company :)

This is SUCH a ridiculous generalization. Just because you have had a bad experience with one dog of a certain breed absolutely does not mean they every single dog is like that. Dogs, just like humans, go through things in their lives that change their personalities and determine the way they act. Basenjis are absolutely wonderful dogs….and they are GREAT family and companion dogs.
