Love this! Wish I had a group like this for my baby girl when she was alive, but we had a great 16 years with her. I didn't know what a Basenji was until an old lady at a dog park commented that she was sure my pup was a Basenji, and after a bit of research, I was convinced, too. My girl had a stub for a tail (was like that when she was found off the street), a tongue that always curled up, and the gentlest disposition. Miss her so much.

These Basenjis are so wicked fast! … Mine lived to be 17.5 years old and she never got to play with others of her breed. All the behaviors are spot on and even the elderly Basenji who can’t see very well is part of the action. My girl “ Bantu” really didn’t like water too much ...at one time she fell in a swimming pool and sunk! She was 15 at the time and boy we had to save her quick! Does anyone else know if Basenjis can swim? They have so much muscle mass it’s like she was just a rock in water.

My last Basenji, registered name Bit of Honey, call name Bitsy or Little Bits was also my first Basenji. Two days after her 17th birthday she had a stroke. Our other Basenji Pupcake was 15 and he suffered from Mega-esophagus and we fed him puréed food from a standing position on the stairs! When we knew we had to say goodbye to Bitsy we also said goodbye to Pupcake. They lived together and died together.

I've love when they get around other dogs watchitng the short hair on their backs stand up. Usually when they are around a new dog. Through instincts they seeem to recognize their own breed right off the bat. They are an on-sight scent hound pack dog. When thjey growl at each other it actually their way of playing in a pack and they are very mischeievious.

@yumpladukfoo Well in my 30+ years being around the breed i have noticed that they will stand facing up wind with their head titled up the air and their nostrils flaring to pick up a scent. While walking them they would stand still looking at a cat or a wild rabbit ready to sprint after it when i had them in a leash. Basenjis are different they are a combination of both sight and scent abilities. The Basenji was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1944 and the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1948.

Before you get a Basenji please read the book “So you think you want a Basenji “. This booklet will open your eyes! Even though my husband is a dog trainer and had researched the breed for over a year we got the book. Also, you need to find a reputable breeder. A good breeder will interview you about your home and your lifestyle because a good breeder won’t sell a Basenji to an unknown buyer.

Hi. It might be challenging with a puppy if no one can be home for 8 hours. Especially with a Basenji. They have a lot of energy, and need a lot of playtime and activity. Once they’re past the puppy stage, it shouldn’t be a problem staying alone for eight hours, but be prepared for a few hours of active playtime after you get home. They need lots of walks and social interaction too. 😊

They are super intelligent and can cause tons of damage to your home if left unstimulated for hours at a time. If you do get one, please make sure to take them on a run in the morning before leaving, play a the game fox on a stick but don't let them win right off the bat. Make them chase and jump and sprint.
