I've had many dogs through the years, and in my 60 yrs on this planet, I have come to the realization that my dogs licked my face, hands, head, neck, etc., for a multitude of reasons, including, but not limited to: showing affection, welcoming you home after work or being away, to get whatever sweat or salty residue might be on my skin, trying to get my attention (probably to be let outside), waking me up if something is happening in or outside our home. There's nothing "NOT cute" about it. I loved all my dogs, and I know they loved me, 'cause they would get up from where they were and move closer to me no matter what room I'm in. Begs the question if it is not affection, have you ever seen a dog lick the face or hands of somebody that they dog didn't like? Of course not.

There’s no question dogs give licks as affection. My chihuahua loves to climb up and just blip the end of my nose. Same spot, multiple times. There’s not sweaty salt there. And then she wants to tuck her head into my chest. My heeler will climb in bed with me and kiss the back of my bald head, ritually, in the morning just before wake up. THAT one may be enjoying a bit of salt taste, but when he does that, he rests his whole head on my neck and cuddles. There’s definitely affection there. There’s not a one-size-fits-all answer to these questions. Dogs are living and loving beings with their own thoughts as varied as people.

He also has many doggie behaviors I asked him why do dogs like our face? He said many reasons but he thinks the main one is they are showing love. When I look my dog in the face an talk to him in a loving voice and pet him, he ALWAYS responds by licking my face and only my face, for a long time and wags his tail and seems very happy. Yes there could be other reasons but IMO that's the main one. I've never seen a dog lick anyone's face who they didn't like/love.

Yes, the instinct to lick faces comes from the habit of wolves to do this and cause the hunting wolves to regurgitate their kills to share with the pack, but in dogs this has evolved into something else. Anyone who has had many dogs knows that a dog may lick because you are sad, or not feeling well, or the dog is happy. That is because dogs are so tuned into human emotions, we can used them as trained aids to alert humans, that the human is about to faint. So dogs, learn what we like, and they try and give us what we like, and if a person likes dog kisses, the dog will give dog kisses to make the human feel better.

People who arent even dog people always trying to tell us they know more about dogs than we do,"us dog people that have had dogs our entire lives"! Not only do they show they love you by licking but if you are injured, somehow they know it and will lick it also! I hurt my elbow for example, couldnt tell but looking just strained it, didn't have any marks no indication it was injured i didnt even rub it or anything but i noticed my dog licking right where the pain seemed to emanate from, i had taken some antibiotics and one of the sudeeffects was ligament damage. So it didnt stop the pain but it did feel good while it was being licked lol!🤠👍

They did a study about dogs and it took them something like 8 years to confirm dogs feel happiness... wait another 100 years and they will figure out licks have multiple meanings. Growing up with dogs it took me no time at all to realize they feel happiness. Most all animals have feelings, it's just people try to separate themselves from the animal kingdom all the time, yet we are primates. It's ignorant to think only 1 type of animal (humans) can feel emotions. I think people separate themselves from animals so they can't be as cruel as they want without regret. Every living being deserves to be happy and treated as if they experience happiness. All living beings have inherent value, regardless of their utility to humans, all forms of life have an intrinsic right to exist and flourish.

They'll also tell you not to let a dog lick your scraped knee but i've heard other people i didnt even know, some were even from different parts of the country. That if a dog licks it, it will heal faster! I know from experience that to be true. When i was younger, about eight or nine i had scraped my knee and it felt like it was getting infected i could hardly bend it, so i was setting on the steps and my dog came up and started licking it, at first i stopped her but then something told me let her continue so i did and i know its hard to believe but it felt better immediately and the next day it was almost good as new, the swelling and redness was gone and i could bend it without pain. Thats a fact! I've heard some Vets. Say dogs have enzymes in their mouths that may promote healing, others say their mouths are full of germs, i guess if it had just eaten something nasty it could spread to your wound but all i've experienced and heard are good things.🤠👍

Dogs lick you without you showing affection to taste what you have been eating. Most humans teach their dog that licks to the face are affection

There are specific nutrients in grass that are good for the dog. On licking it really depends on where the dog is licking, dogs are very good at identifying where your body hurts or where there might be a health issue. One of the reasons that they excellent medical detection dogs. My dog also like to lick castor oil off of me.

I think they're kisses because it's a part of the relationship you and dog 🐕 hooked by a climax of food or taste of saltiness kinda like hugs to other people. Not always the same cuz but the body difference makes it unique. You hug your chubby Mom,the chubbiness is only part of the charm....so the hope of food and saltiness of a dog licking you is only part of the charm of the mutual affection.

Huh? Share what food? My dog never licks me when I have any food around. I’ll get up and sit at my desk where he’ll come over, cuddle me, then lick me on the nose. I’ll leave food sitting around all the time and he won’t eat it. I’ll give him his food I prepare for him and leave it in his crate. He will eat it when he’s hungry and often leave it for hours at a time. Why do people assume dogs obsess over food? And moreover, why do people train their dogs around that assumption?

Dogs lick for multiple reasons. They may smell something that interests them on your body like food on your mouth, lotion, or another animals scent that you just rubbed. But dogs also show affection and expressions through their mouths. For instance if they’re hot they’ll pant because that’s how they cool down, or if they want your attention they’ll grab your hand with their mouth or play bite to tell you they want to play. Dogs use their mouths for many purposes, including licking because their tastebuds are super enhanced and they taste 10 times greater than humans, plus your scent and taste is a way to them remembering you.

The behavior depends on the reinforcement and rewards. Pavlov proved this long ago. A dog that is reinforces and rewarded for licking will do so for more reinforcement and rewards. A dog for which licking behavior is undesirable has had the reinforcing and rewards withheld and therefore does not lock for affection. Thus it depends on the behavior, not some Simone you tube or tic tic.

He is correct when he says that a dog licking your mouth is because it wants food. It's a holdover from being a puppy, but it's not the only reason they lick your face. Dogs are essentially wolves stuck in puppy phase.

Licking can mean many different things, depending on context. Dogs show affection to each other by grooming, licking, so of course sometimes their licks are affection with their human. It's not rocket science. Dogs are smart enough to equate human kissy noises with affection and lick the human to show that yes, I love you too. But they might also lick at food or sweat on your hands, lick their paws, lick their butt, lick the furniture, all for different reasons. Sometimes when I grab something with my hand it is for balance, sometimes to pick it up, sometimes it is to fiddle with it, sometimes it is to steer a car, or honk a boob. There can be many reasons I grab things with my hand. Holy Smokes! LOL

I'm horribly allergic to dog hair, dander, saliva and dog smell. This is a doctor tested fact. However, coincidentally I've always really disliked dogs (with rare exception) aside from the allergy. I find their habits to be really gross and disgusting. They're destructive... even outside, but especially inside a house. Chewing up furniture, carpets, shoes, blankets, etc. Mud everywhere. Fleas everywhere. Homes with dogs become more "doghouses" than people houses. The revolting butt scooting on carpets, a layer of hair everywhere, lying on furniture ruining it, smeared dirty windows in house and cars, the nose in the crotch, humping anything and everything, eating vomit and poop, nose in the asses of other animals, jumping up on me, always walking right under my feet, laying around licking and slurping their own paws and genitals which is SO disgusting and then licking people, peeing everywhere, incessant barking and running in the house, staring and drooling at people while people are eating, messy food/water areas, sneaking food off table tops, and always doing something their owners need to constantly yell at them for. I know there are exceptions and there ARE well mannered dogs, but they're VERY rare. Dog people are just over the top about their dogs, caling them their chidren and "furbabies." I find it hard to believe that people walk their dogs, watch them poop which is also gross, and then actually pick up that poop in a bag with their hand... bagged or not, thats just gross, 🤮🤮, but I'm glad they don't let it lie around to be stepped in. I just know I couldn't do this, but of course, I don't have a dog. No matter what their dogs do, dog owners will yell at them (a LOT) about it, but usually still won't train them to be better. Do people enjoy this constant yelling at their dog? They must. I just don't get it. It's like keeping a cow in the house.

Since dogs have such a keen sense of smell, they may be licking you because they smell the last thing you ate and they want a taste. You don't have to have food in your mouth, they can smell what you had last night for supper, or yesterday for lunch or even breakfast. Dogs have 40 times more smell receptors than humans do. That's why the police will let your dog smell an article of clothing that your toddler wore last night and then can follow that scent until they find the missing toddler.
