The real reason "Ashwthama" was cursed was because he tried to kill an unborn baby in the womb (of the lady you saw being hit by some light), apparently that baby was supposed to be the ruler of the new India after the Mahabharat war in Kali Yuga(the era of absolute inhumanity, sins and everything bad, where evil is at its pinnacle), and Ashwathama tried to ruin the future and the vision set by the gods.

Need to clarify 2 things. 1. Avatar does not mean a person taking birth again. Avatar means God and other divine beings taking birth on Earth. 2. In Hinduism, there are various kinds of books. Vedas - It is primordial text and the basic text. Can be compared to the bible. Upanishads - It is a commentry on the Vedas but set on Philosophy. These created the basic ethos of India. 3. Puranas - These are stories on Gods, Demigods, Demons etc. and can be termed as mythology. 4.Ithihasa - Itihasa is defined as Historical Events woven into a story to propogate the Values for Humans. So basically, the events would have taken place but in a more humanely ways but to make the story interesting exaggerations are introduced. There are only 2 Itihasas - Ramayana and Mahabharat. P. S : Bhagawad Gita which is one of the most widely appreciated philosophical text is just a part of the larger Mahabharat. You could check it out if you're interested.

Vedas talks about the science of physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, warfare, architecture, nutrition, yoga, astrology, astronomy, desire, mental exercises also human & several such beings historical records(repeatable). While bible only talks about human biology and psychology in metaphorical terms.

if u want to know mahabharat and it's story there is an animation film in hindi in youtube you can look into it .That move is not complete mahabharat but the main plot and conflict is shown in that movie.

One correction here Lord Krishna never said to Ashwatthama that he needs to protect him in Kaliyuga when he will born as Kalki.He just gave him curse to live forever in pain and wounds with puss.No body will help him and he will roam alone watching all the worst things in the world .He is immortal and in remorse of his sin he did during Mahabharata trying to kill unborn child of Pandavas .He is helping the unborn child to get salvation from eternal life. Director has twisted the fact for creative liberty.In actual Mahabharata things are different.

Ashwa Dhama is so big because as per Hindu puranas people in Ashwa Dhama period are 8 to 10 feet tall that is 6000 years ago

Just to make it clear, if there ever were a Mahabharata series to be produced, it's gonna be more mind blowing that GOT. It has so many complex characters, Plot twist, betrayals etc. Sadly, due to its religious connections, it's hard to showcase it in its true form, as truth tends to hurt people.

The war bits, piles of bodies and the woman getting shot in her womb are all from Mahabharata which happened between 1500-2000 BC. It was a huge war that had lots of bloodshed. It was basically among cousins for the throne, but the intention here was a lot bigger actually. It started as a feud for throne but it escalated to be a war of Dharma vs Adharma (Dharma here means duty and not religion). The two parties of the war were Kauravas (100 brothers) and Pandavas(5 brothers). Kauravas had done a lot of Adharma (bad deeds, ethically and morally) and refused to give anything to Pandavas, who rightfully deserved to be on the throne. At that time, the eldest brother used to be the crown prince and then king. According to that, Yudhishthira, the oldest of Pandavas, was actually the oldest of all Pandavas and the Kauravas and should've been the king. But Duryodhana, the eldest of Kauravas wanted the kingdom for himself so he tricked the Pandavas and their mother a lot of times, attempting to kill them. They even tried disrobing Draupadi, the Pandavas' wife (It was a Polyandrous marriage) in the royal court in front of all the ministers and elders of the clan but Lord Krishna saved her. One thing led to another and finally, the war of Kurukshetra happened, the Mahabharata war. Lord Krishna was the charioteer of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, the undefeatable archer of that time and Ashwatthama, Karna, all the 100 Kauravas, dronacharaya (he was the teacher of Kauravas and Pandvas) and Bhishma, were from Kauravas side. Mind you, all these people were mighty warriors but were from the Adharma's side so they faced death as a fruit of their bad karma. The war went on for 18 days killing people left and right, the piles of dead bodies are glimpses from the same war. The war ended, and Pandavas won. Ashwatthama, who was the son of Dronacharya was seething with anger at the defeat. His father had been killed by cheating and his friend, Duryodhana, lay dead in front of his eyes, he wanted revenge. He sneaked into Pandavas' tents, their sons were sleeping there, he mistook them for Pandavas and killed all five sons. Enraged, Arjuna summoned Brahmastra, the most powerful celestial weapon that could destroy the earth, and as a response, Ashwatthama did it too. Lord Krishna, advised Arjuna to not use it as it would cause a lot of destruction so he took it back. But Ashwatthama had half knowledge, he only knew how to summon it and not withdraw it, so Krishna told him to shoot it in some other direction away from mankind, but he directed it towards Uttara, Pandavas' daughter-in-law, who was pregnant with the only heir of their clan because all of their sons were dead. The scene of the pregnant lady getting shot is Uttara only. Ashwatthama wanted to end Pandavas' lineage which would mean the millions of people who fought would've died in vain. Agitated by this, Krishna takes away Ashwatthama's divine gem that was adorned on his forehead and made him almost invincible. Krishna curses him for attempting to kill an unborn child. He curses him to roam on this earth till the end of Kali Yuga, his body covered in sores, puss and blood. The wounds would not heal and keep bleeding and well up with puss, and gangrene, rotting and smelling so bad that it would repulse people away from him. He would suffer from all sorts of physical diseases but not die. This curse would haunt him for 3000 years and wait for Vishnu's 10th avatar, Kalki, who would free the earth from all the atrocities and dark times. Ashwatthama is supposed to help Kalki fulfil his mission. The old man with the gem on his forehead is Ashwatthama, repenting for his mistakes all this time and finally, Kalki is about to be born so he's doing his part to protect him. The movie delves into the future of this Yuga (age) and how stuff from the past is connected to stuff in the future. Also, Ashwatthma is about 10-12 feet tall. During Dwapara Yuga, around 10 feet was the average height. Height decreases with evolution which is why compared to today's people he looks huge. And well, since this movie is set in 2898 AD, people would probably be a lot shorter than they are now. P. S. There are a lot more details connected to the story of Mahabharata because it's literally a story with thousands of characters and their various dharmic and adharmic acts. I might have made mistakes in the comment but that's because it's been a long time since I read Mahabharata. If something's wrong, please feel free to correct me and I hope I haven't offended anyone.

Ashwatthama was one of the seven Chiranjivi (immortal beings) in Hindu mythology. During the night attack on the Pandava camp, after the Kurukshetra war had ended, he killed the sons of the Pandavas, mistaking them for the Pandavas themselves. In response to his heinous act, Lord Krishna cursed him to roam the earth for 3,000 years with wounds that would never heal, as a form of punishment and repentance. i would wanna explain why this feels special to indians, you already got some context to the story and lore of the hindu scriptures, the character Aswathama is a demi god , and has a blessing of immortality, and if we believe in true Hindu culture, we would believe that the scriptues are real incidents, so what you read is happened, which means a real incident just like how the bible isn't a story but a testament . and what makes it special is the director attempted to write what happens after the scriptures, which I think is very new even for Hollywood. and indian Mythology a whole world of characters( gods) and the world itself had a very unique set of rules and culture which is very interesting to learn about. FOr example , a promise to someone had real consequences, I mean if you made a promise even a real god can't brake it. which gives the promise more power than the god in that scenario and gods had to circumvent around that . its insane if your looking the scriptures with a lens of a story telling perspective.

Bhairava is a lineage passed down from Karn who was the greatest warrior of Mahabharat and saved ashwatthama that's why at the end ashwatthama says he is my friend because of the bow gandiv which arujun wielded in Mahabharat for dharm but there was another bow which was much stronger than gandiv it was passed down from bhagwaan Shiv to lord parshuram and parshuram handed it to karn the most ferocious,most powerful but the most generous person who lived in the history of the world .the bow name is vijay.and when you watch movie you will see what i mean

It draws from the events at the end of the epic Mahabharata and the Mahabharata war in which the previous Avatar of Vishnu or Krishna is present as the charioteer and projects it to the next or 10th and final Avatar of Vishnu that is Kalki and to the imagined events of his birth at the end of Kali Yuga or the Age of Darkness. As per ancient Indian scriptures Kaliyuga starts with death of Krishna and ends with Kalki who destroys darkness and restores balance to the world and creation. Comparing it with anything else except a few stylisations is missing the point. If you really want to get the context read a little into at least the Mahabharata and the concept of yuga though at most places you will find wrong idea of timelines. The Character of Aswathhama (old man) played by Amitabh Bachhan is a character of Mahabharata who was cursed with immortality for his crime of killing unborn children in the mothers womb. Yes in Hindu tradition immortality is a curse as it prevents you from renewing yourself. Aswathhama lives through 6000 yrs to protect the unborn child that is destined to be the 10th Avatar Kalki and be released of his curse of immortality and bringing his Karma full circle. Madhava is another name for Avatar Krishna. If there is anything else you want to know of the scriptural or historical/ Puranic context pl do ask. Yes Mahabharata and Puranas are part of history in the Dharmic tradition and most Indians believe this to be true in parts if at times not whole owing to distortions of time.

Time is divided into 4 parts according to hinduism.. from when earth was created, the first yug (yug is the a huge unit of time, there are 4 yugs in the lifetime of our cycle) is sat yug, the yug were dharma (idk what we can call it in english but u can say, proper behavior/goodness of a human), spirituality, strength was highest.. every person was dope.. with time people started rotting from inside and the proportion of good and bad changed.. sat yug was 100% good people which decayed to 3:1 good and bad which is the treta yug, 3rd is the dwapara with 1:1 or 50-50 good and bad.. the last and the end is kal yug with 1:3 of good to bad and at the end of kal yug.. everyone is bad accept a very few, like 1-99. Actually, the Indian epic titled Maha-Bharatha (Maha = The Great, Bharatha = another name of India, called 'Bharat') is not just a myth, it is as real as a history text book. The problem begins only when our things are mentioned as "myth" 😑 How could it be "myth", you do not know anything about it so how can you end up with the word stating "myth". The movie tries to take a visual approach to show how it'll be when God takes his final stand to end everything which began. So if God's returning again, how will it look. The only problem was deaged ashwathama in mahabharata scene and few shots of desert fight scene. Movie isn't perfect, I would say it's 8 out of 10, could have reduced first half duration and removed some scene entirely. Screenplay could have been better. But that does not matter as this movie is a stepping stone for next gen indian cinema. The experience that went in building sets, figuring out special effects, all that will help in shape better movies. So it is a significant leap in Indian cinema.

Listen the movie is about the story on 2898AD that means when every is city destroyed due to evil ..Except only city called Kasi .the water will be scarce everything is drying up . The evil kali take all the natural resources to a complex the inverted pyramid where rich people stay there .They exploited the city Kasi .Another city called samabal where people rebels against the complex and according to mythology the avatar of Vishnu kalki with born there . And Aswathama who is a warrior in mahabhart kill the pregnant woman that's why Krishna cursed him to alive 6000 year with lot of pain . Now he trying to protect that women from complex for the last avatar of Vishnu called kalki. And vairava the man is a bounty hunter of Kasi want to go to complex to live a good life there . Now watch ..Another thing you should know in mahabharat 2 warrior is best one Arjuna and other one is karna . Both are brothers but Arjun was in the favour krushna and Karna due to certain circumstances take the side of evil . Karna is more powerful but get killed due to tricks .Now karna want also redemption just like Aswathama to help the avatar of visnu called krishna
