We Found a SECRET HIDDEN DOOR - - What's inside?
While removing the bookshelves and fireplace mantle, we found a secret hidden door and compartment. We had no idea it was there for 2 years!

I'll be checking all over that house for more hidden compartments
I think that's where the previous owner hid his first edition books haha. 😉

What a brilliant place to keep your valuables 😊
That plywood looks newer than the 1930's even for being hidden behind the mantle. My guess is there was originally a fireplace or a wood stove inside the mantle when the house was first built. Yes, commercial plywood became viable in 1934, but didn't take off extensively until post WWII. When they took out the original fireplace/wood stove insert they built that box with the fake marble (also doesn't look to be 1930's) and when they did so they added the secret compartment.
Handy for hiding your valuables. 👍
Good that the two of you experienced the excitement of hidden storage.
I have seen very similar set ups simply for liquor bottles. Sort of a nice display for when company comes by, you open the little door and the light illuminates the expensive bottles.
I own an 1820's Brick Farmhouse it has many secret compartments. My son has lived there for 2 years and has not found a single one. I will never tell him where. Love the Oak Mantle, Hope it was not destroyed. Sat Down at my drafting bench and drew the plan. As a woodworker this will be a fun plan for my house.
That's really cool to find hidden secrets. Keep up the good work!!

We guess it was built in early 2000 when the prior owner added the bookshelves and addition to the house.
Maybe you guys can put another hidden hole someplace too? Leave a letter or a time capsule of sorts. Yes, you may live there forever, but who knows what will happen in the next 50 years? You could leave something for others to have fun in finding.

I think that the prior owner may have done that when he built all of this...we shall see if we find something else squirreled away.

I saw the thumbnail and immediately thought "Put the candle back!"
I built a decorative fireplace mantle along with bookcases for a client. If you stuck your head up inside the fireplace the top lifted out of the way and there was a space on either side to stand rifles up plus shelves for valuables. The top was labeled “ No fires” Decorative fireplace only.
Hidden treasures back in the day.😊nice find! Although empty, it's very intriguing for sure 😊

A good place to hide guns
Oh wow!!! That’s crazy to have found that secret door. Too bad there wasn’t anything hiding in there. Yes I am sure there will be many more treasure hunts on your property just waiting to be discovered. And looking forward to you next up coming project on the house. I just love watching house demos and remodeling. And just homestead projects all together. Your channel is one of my favorite channels to watch you rant #1 in my book. Have an awesome day and will be waiting for more videos to come take care😊

They may be as lucky as me. I have so many hidden places in my house, that was build by a bootlegger. I just posted about it. Even an entire secret room. He even had a speakeasy in what I call the cottage, he had dancing girls according to a neighbor who was 100 years old when I moved here. From the outside it looks just like a small normal house of the Great Depression years.

My parents last house had 2 hidden stairs. One was a narrow one between twining room and kitchen. It had a door and it went up to the master bedroom bathroom or closet. The other one went from that bathroom to the attic. The house was built in 1900.

Some old houses had secret compartments in the dining or living room for booze during prohibition.

Civil war homes in the South may have had compartments to hide gold and silver from Yankees.

That would have both scared the pebbles out of me, and excited me to know that there could possibly be other secrets in and round the home/property. Very cool find!
Well you just outed the home safe.

Very nice mantle. Love it.
During prohibition they hid the liquor there..I lived in a house built in the 1800 too n it had hidden shelves behind the fireplace n it had old liquor bottles hid there with hooch still in them...smelled like pure kerosene...lol
Exciting find.💕💕🌻🌻
I would have never told anyone about that find! Kept it for hiding my own valuables… 😉
That fireplace surround looks like the one in my parents home. My mother bought the surround from an antique dealer to put into their new home. The back of the surround had a date written on the back of 1870.
