I play violin and bass guitar both and I can say, that both this instruments are very cool and have their own advantages. BUT I think that violin is harder to start learning, because it's not too easy to make cool sound from it, and play correct notes. And bass is harder to learn when you already learn basics, but you want to play some harder things, and use different techniques
@ssimms8995
2 жыл бұрын
Oh definitely. I play both as well. I took 6 years of private violin lessons and have been teaching myself the bass with occasional college lessons for 2 years. The bass was very natural for me to pick up whereas the violin I still struggle in many areas. My first instrument was the piano, which really doesn't help me with either. I also think the bass is was more fun. The violin is a beautiful instrument made for classical music, but you can have so much fun with rock, jazz, metal, funk, and really any genre of the bass

Musician so he understand strings, fingering and has practiced hearing so he corrects the position of his fingers as he goes. Still sounds terrible but better than a beginner that never played any instrument, especially string instrument
@TheMule71
2 жыл бұрын
Well, he's a very good player and knows tons about music in general, also plays a distant relative instrument (string based), so many concepts are totally familiar to him. Tuning for example, they only had to tell him which it is, w/o explaining what a tuning means as you would to a complete beginner. Dave has to adapt from a perfect-fourths to a perfect-fifths tuning, but it's a minor adjustment overall (for sure other adjustements are more challenging). Also, Dave has extremely good finger coordination in the left hand (and right one of course but brobably that plays a different role in a violin), vastly superior to that of a beginner. The hand positioning is different, but finger control translates almost perfectly. Dave plays fretless bass, too, so the lack of frets isn't disturbing him at all, and he's totally familiar with the concept of positioning to get different semi-tones. I think he struggle mostly with the bow. Probably you'd find him good at plucking, as his right hand coordination translates almost perfectly at that. Even piano players wouldn't be total beginners, but while they may understand the idea of tuning, they don't have a direct practical knowledge of the relationship between strings, as a guitar/bass player does. They have good hand coordination but not in the same movements. Also the note distribution is very different. I imagine they'd struggle more, but they'd still be far ahead compared to total beginners. And last but not least, some people are just talented af. Dave is one of them for sure.

I mean, he is a proficient musician after all and knows how to play fretless bass as well. So the concept of not having frets is something he is accustomed to. Also fingering is important in bass playing, so the transition to violin is not that hard. Of course playing a new instrument comes with all its own difficulties, but being a good player on a different instrument helps a lot, especially when they come from a similar family. And I would group bass and violin in a similar family, both string instruments, both (usually) 4 strings, left hand does the fingering. Closer than for example marimbaphone and trumpet.

@@Dethleffff you ever played violin?? The only thing bass like that i would compare it to is double bass or cello, double bass for the fretless and cello for the use of a bow. Other than that bass guitar and violin have bugger all similarities besides being fretless.
@Dethleffff
2 жыл бұрын
@@keith221191 I am a guitar player and fooled around with a violin only once. The major difficulty was the bow and the way one holds the violin, not the left hand fingering. At least for complete beginner purpose the knowledge about where notes are on the guitar and where they are on the violin translates good enough, since the relative spacing is the same on both instruments. If you want to play a D on the A string, it is roughly one quarter down on the string and you probably won't use your index finger to shift that far up. Also you can just slide into the correct pitch if you are off. And having musical experience really helps to figure out a) if you are off and b) where you have to slide. Of course I am only talking about absolute beginner stuff, but this is what this video is all about. I am not saying playing violin is easy, when you know how to play bass. I say, learning to play violin is easier, when you know how to play another stringed instrument that shares the overall shape.

@@MJ-nf4uz personally, knowledge/muscle memory for guitar didn't translate even slightly for violin. Cello/double bass helped much more. Picking and bowing are just too different, and require vastly different techniques. ofc tho theres more similarities between 2 string instruments than between a string instrument and a brass. But within their specific class, guitar n violin dont have too much overlap

Violin Chan never needed rescuing, just some family counselling with her adopted parent.
Brett would be an actually good teacher

Of course Davie can play. He's from the country of Paganini, Vivaldi and Stradivari.
Why I suddenly want to cry when I get to 6:14-7:00 Brett and Eddy were both looking at Davie and sorta encouraging him while accompanying him and Brett gave hints whenever there are somewhat hard changes. This is beautiful!! This is really like the plot, when enemies (I know they are not) became friends and gradually solved the misunderstanding btw them. BEAUTIFUL!!
