Bill and Frank won the apocalypse. They lived long and happy lives and went out on their terms. Most people in this world go out by being ripped apart, starving, shot, dying from infection, etc. You don't see many stories like theirs in "zombie" fiction. Bill made the house safe. Frank made the house a home.

This whole episode was basically a break from how shi**y the world is and even though it has all gone to hell, there are still some happy stories out there. idk if anyone mentioned this on your patreon, but one really cool thing from the first episode is that joel and sarah avoided becoming infected multiple times. the fungus got into the flour and sugar supply, so they could have been infected had they actually had pancakes like sarah had planned, ate the biscuits and cookies the neighbour had offered, or from the cake had joel not forgotten about it. i just love the detail in this show, and i’m so happy you’ve watched it!!

Just to be clear, the fungus doesn't just grow in people. It grows in the ground as well. It's the fungus in the ground that can transfer information along all the connected fungi. In ep 2 the other infected were lying on fungus and receieved the information from the Firefly base fungus connected to it and woke up the zombies. Killing a zombie by itself does not tell other zombies in other locations that a zombie died. You need the fungus in the ground to transmit that info.

I get why that story is being told in this world, but it was still a fairly generic romance that I didn't really feel much for.

  • @exposureeee

@@MoldyMojoMonkey I think a lot of it has to do with that episode having the most original content among the 9. The rest of the episodes pretty much strictly follow the game's narrative, but that episode was something new. So both first-time watchers and people who played the game went in blind. There's also the fact that people valued the representation of gay characters, as it's not often that gay characters get represented as well as these two on screen.

In the video game, the daughter dying hits just a bit harder because you get to play as her for a while before everything goes to s*it. You see a birthday card that she forgot to give her dad say: "Congratulations! You're not a fossil (yet) Dear dad, Let's see...you're never around, you hate the music I'm into, you practically despise the movies I like, and yet somehow you still manage to be the best dad every year. How do you do that? Happy Birthday, pops! Sarah." It really hits when you're trying to run from the infected but you're slow because you're holding you're daughter, only to have her die a few agonizing minutes later thinking: They were so close😢. The love story is different than in the show and offers a different dynamic and perspective, but the way it was done in the show was great.

I know it get's overshadowed by the amazing Bill and Frank episode. But the episode with Tess and her dying is one of my favorites. The summation of their relationship in just their few glances at the ends and how he realised he loved her in his way and that the only way he could show it was by looking after Ellie. The acting was off the charts. The fear in her eyes, the not wanting to die but knowing she had to and her will slowly fading with the kiss with the infected as it took over her mind all told through pretty entirely through her eyes. So good.

The reason that the infected were signaled when Tes died is because when the infected woke up he broke the vine that was holding on to his hand and the other infected felt it, that is why no infected came when Ellie killed the infected in the gas station because that infected wasn't connected to the Cordyceps (the fungus that you see growing out of them) that's why they were also being careful not to step on it when exploring the museum.

ive been a fan of the game for years so here’s something’s about the show (no spoilers) - the game ISNT decision based, the storyline is straight forward - the disease spread through flour and sugar in the beginning - in the game we didnt meet frank, instead we got a bunch of silly drama between ellie and bill (they despised each other) but they changed it, imo i love this storyline SO MUCH BETTER. as much as i love the ellie and bill drama i also love a traumatizing and heartbreaking love story and episode three gave us just that. - the woman who plays marlene in the show also voiced and acted for marlene in the game (the game was filmed using motion capture, sometimes actors will voice a character but wont do the mo-cap for them idk i just loved that tidbit) - the shirt sarah wears in the beginning was actually based off neil druckmans daughters stuffed animal when he first made the game in 2013, he took the name of the animal and turned it into a concert shirt which i love - bella ramsey who plays ellie is british but learned how to talk in an american accent from cuss words which fits ellie’s character so well - in the game they had spores which would be in locations like underground where infected would be stuck in for a long time and the spores would develop but they sadly took it out of the show - SUPER SUPER SUPER SAD detail that isn’t shown in the show but still applies to it is that the infection takes over the brain but leaves the host alive, this means EVERY SINGLE INFECTED is still conscious and aware of everything that is happening but they just cant control their body. in the game if you listen closely (the easiest one to find being with the first infected you come across after the 20 years who’s eating a human) it can be heard saying something along the lines of “im so sorry i dont want to do this” through the growls or whatever. - my FAVORITE fact: the disease is actually a real thing. so far it has only been able to infect ants but its a real disease uhhh yeah thanks for listening to me yap i might add more later idk

But I can say as someone in his early 50's episode three "Long, Long Time" was so well crafted and better. Setting down in such a chaotic world this beautiful relationship that was real. The episode worked because it showed us the truth that even if a apocalypse happens, personal relations continue and blossom in some cases. And it broke me emotionally for a couple of days after honestly. So again, thank you for the review.

Cordyceps is a real thing. And it is airborne by releasing its spores. It's just not airborne in the show...yet.

I heard somewhere that they replaced the airborne thing with the underground connection because having actors in masks all the time wouldn't be beneficial. I haven't played the games, so I don't know exactly how it works in the game.

That it is correct, considering the actor who plays joel also plays The Mandalorian its kind of ironic they said that. In the TLOU game, enclosed areas like buildings/sewers are filled with spores on top of being bit. TLOU Part 2 the spore concept plays an important part in a cutscene. And the directors said theyre going to include spores in season 2@@Jantzku

Delighted at how much you two enjoyed episode 3 in particular. This tv series has made me weep during at least half the eps. & I'm okay with that. It's a high quality show that stands on its own-haven't played the game. Love season 1, irresistibly well-made (the thoughtful and understated dialog, the lighting, the music, the performances, etc.) with such beauty & such pain.

Stepping on patches of cordyceps will alert the fungi, not killing them. Tess explained tendrils under the ground or on the ground. You step on a tendril or a patch, they will feel something and go to that area.

the fungus arent connected at all times only sometimes in ceryain areas when they're laid on the ground. theres an underground fungus network called a mycelium and thays cant connect different parts of the fungus colony. u never know which u could or even stepping on some on the ground can alert colony members to your location

So excited to see you guys watching this show! This show was filmed in and around my home city, and honestly this could not have worked out at any other time. The city was on lock down for covid for at least part of filming so the city agreed to shut down large sections for them to use, and with the amazing set dec you can see why that made it seem so real. I'm sure you know by now it's very true to the game, the showrunner Craig Mazin (created Chernobyl and wrote Hangover Part 2) is a self-professed super fan of The Last of Us game. HBO asked him what he wanted to do next after the massive success of Chernobyl and he chose Last of Us. He also made the game creator/director (Neil Druckmann) his co-showrunner, so you know that was serious about making it authentic. Neil was very gracious in being willing to make changes if he agreed that they made sense. In fact he got mad (jokingly) at Craig for the version of Bill and Frank we got here because "Why didn't I think of that?" I also loved that you picked up on the importance of the letter at the end of Ep 3. Apart from the unbelievable beauty of the episode, that letter was the entire point and explains Joel's motivation. Can't wait to see how much you enjoyed the rest!

The doctor's monologue during the beginning of episode 2 is still my favorite moment of this series. It fully embraces the grim tone and reality of the situation while keeping the human emotional response in play. The doctor looking like shes going to start crying, while speaking about the only safer bet, is such a beautiful performance.

I haven't seen a comment talk about it, but for the show they had the underground network of cordyceps because they didn't want to have the actors wearing gas masks, as the game had places full of spores that could lead to being infected, so they added the network of cordyceps that would alert the infected when stepped on or disturbed (like when the dead infected touched the patch, not when it was killed)

This game is what I absolutely love about story driven games. When my wife and I played this game it was transformative of an experience and to see how well they did the opening sequence that leads to his daughter dying deserves praise. They really did this game justice and kept it as close to the game's story as they could.
