Agreed. I argued with my daughter about going into teaching just for this reason. She has a BA in Economics and Math (dual major) and fell in love with teaching during COVID when she picked up a sub job in her last semester of Undergrad. Now she's going back for a MA in Special Ed so she can be certified to teach. Ironically, the parents and administration in Special Ed seems to be so much better than the districts.

I’m a teacher who quit to homeschool my kids. There are a million factors in this, but one of my biggest reasons was I wasn’t allowed to “teach” because it was so test focused and had no support from admin. The day I decided I was done was when a student threw a chair at me, and admin decided the best punishment was to let him color and give him a sucker. That same week I got in trouble for allowing my kids extra time at recess because heaven forbid 5 year olds move their bodies. The system is broken.

You should have went to a public school board meeting and let the board know. Basically embarrassing them in front of parents by asking politely for supplies. They could have easily taken a $20 pay cut per week for your supplies. Everywhere I have lived the superintendent, school board, etc makes too much money for the job they're doing, but they're the ones that vote the amount to pay themselves. Added. (Ideas for those in the same situation) Write an article in the editorial of the local paper stating more money is needed for sanitation/cleaning at the school. Spend a couple of hours in front of the local grocery store asking for money for supplies. Take pictures of your current supply closet to show the situation. If it came down to raising people’s taxes or a few people throwing a couple of bucks in the pot, I'm sure people would put a buck or two in the pot. There are so many creative ways to raise money. I'm not sure if you need to the board or principal in charge to get permission though.

The reason that they have the same qualifications as the 1-8 teachers is so that they can teach any grade K-8. Once you get to the high school level, then the teachers certification is different, but the master's degree requirements don't seem to be any different. The whole thing is just stupid.

Can they already read when in higher grades, do they know how to be away from mum for 7 hours without melting down, do they know how to sit still for a couple of minutes at a time, do they know how to work and play well with others, etc? I’m a newly supply TA and lemme tell you, going from school to school, child to child it’s a mental headache. You have to get a read on a child’s personality, HOW they learn, their behaviour, WHY they are acting that way, their usual routine, every minute detail about a class and the children in it, what does their usual teacher teach them? How do they teach them? Do they require a lot of positive reinforcement, do they require a calm out corner? What is something that makes a child upset, who is their friendship group? What’s the dynamic? Have they had supply teachers before? What was their relationship like with the previous supply teacher?(bc yes that has an impact on the children). Do the children connect with you? How will they connect with you? And on top of that, how does the SEN child work? Do they have a corner to themselves? Who is their SEN teacher? What resources do they need? Do the class have a good relationship with the SEN child? There’s so many more things to consider when teaching so when the gov say “hey you random person with no teaching background, teach these kiddos and then we’ll wonder why our children are all over the place !!” It’s annoying to say the least, we are educators with degrees BECAUSE children are COMPLEX and malleable, they absorb every new change in their life and shouldn’t be tossed around to people who don’t know how to make simple Maths and English even simpler.

I've trained a lot of teachers and I have learned that MANY people who are "qualified" on paper are just not teachers. And even more who are gifted but not in possession of a degree. I don't think it's fair to imply that someone without a degree does not recognize or respect what it means to teach. Also, college is 100% a choice. 100%. So the debt...was chosen. The time invested... was chosen. I suspect that at least a little piece of the upset is actually connected to bitterness over that debt. Gatekeeping something that is a *gift* because someone got where you are- STILL NEEDING TO LEARN ENOUGH TO BE CERTIFIED- but without jumping through as many hoops.

I’m going to disagree with you… to teach you need a well rounded educational background. It depends on what the subject area- yeah you could probably teach K-6 with a HS Diploma and some college/certification but the upper grades require context. Note: I’m not saying that everyone with a teaching degree should be teaching. I draw a distinction between a teacher and a trainer and a very big problem is that the system turns good teachers into trainers.

@@JimAllen-Persona I would not put a high school grad with a certificate in charge of a class of elementary students, especially P-2. P-2 teachers set the foundation through the critical developmental years for students to learn how to learn. If students aren’t given quality education in those 4 years, it becomes harder and harder to catch them back up. Plus those years are when students are still learning how to process everything. That is a skill that is done in a supportive environment and the fact that there are more behavioral problems in school is indicating that students aren’t learning these abilities at home and they don’t feel safe doing it at home.

My friend’s son is in a room for kids with autism and other neurological disorders, and it’s been a rough start to the year. The old teacher moved and the new one they brought in it is her first year teaching. The issue is that she didn’t get a degree in special education, has no idea how to even deal with what some of these kids go through, and how they need to learn. Since there was such a “shortage “ they just decided to hire her and have the head of the SPED department keep close tabs on her. As a par by of a child who is autistic and basically nonverbal, I have a lot to say about what the school did. SPED teachers are a different breed, they know they are going into a super high stress environment that most likely has physically aggressive kids. It’s wrong Tom put a teacher in there who didn’t study and learn how to be in that classroom.

I remember having friends in college who were studying to be teachers and I would sometimes help them with projects (mostly cutting out things and spell checks) but seeing the work that they had to do as well as the hours they had to put into work studies showed how much work goes in to become a teacher. My grandmother was a teacher assistant and I saw how thankless the job could be sometimes it gave me a healthy respect for teachers out there. Yes there are going to be some bad teachers out their but that doesn't mean they all are.

Sorry but a degree alone does not a teacher make. There are numerous videos of people in a subset of work who have years if experience on the job and have people with all kinds of degrees acting as if that makes them the expert on a subject over someone who has been on a job for years but not the same number of degrees. Sometime experience trumps the number of degrees someone holds. Especially in education when a lot of these people who point out their degrees, don’t have social skills or emotional intelligence to make good or effective teachers. You can be knowledgeable in subject but can’t teach it to anyone to understand.

Sad to say this is my own experience. Joined an accelerated program thru my local school district to become a teacher during COVID. I feel like I am underserving my students w my lack of experience and feel like I’m dying at the same time. Don’t know what the fix is but I think a great place to start is to raise pay and provide adequate resources to keep veteran teachers on board.

I recently mused about going back into teaching, and here's what I found: salary offerings were where they were 10 years ago, in some cases less. Especially with lesser benefits than once offered, and a retirement that I quite frankly I see as about as reliable a guarantee as social security, where's the carrot? So here's the thing: We CAN to an extent complain about "nobody wants to work!" post peak COVID in regards to people not returning to the jobs and incomes they were working before the incentivized unemployment during the quarantines and such. However, we CAN'T complain about people not wanting to work when they're not being offered livable wages for full-time jobs. ESPECIALLY when there is such a huge income gap between the top of large corporations and the workers in those same corporations. If we keep consolidating the wealth of our economy where the majority of our citizens are struggling through "a tough economy" while the tax exempt and subsidized super-wealthy see their own numbers continue to hit record highs unphased. THAT is where the problem is with the currency flow of our economy.

I’m not a teacher and I hate when people are just like “oh I could teach, it’s so easy.” Or figure when they retire they could go teach a class or something with their spare time like it’s a hobby. The one thing I’ve always known I’ve never wanted to be is a teacher. I’m not good at instructing, keeping up constantly with lesson plans sounds like too much, I don’t have the patience, standing up in front of that many people makes me so nervous, I couldn’t handle it. I give all you teachers all the props, you deserve more of everything, you deserve it ALL for what you do. It is not an easy job.

I am not a teacher. However, I am a parent of a special needs child. While we had to put my son in a different school, I have to say his teacher was the best and she tried so hard to implement and try new things to make my son successful. I will forever be grateful for her devotion, and yes, we have maintained a relationship not only because I appreciate what she’s done, but she also experiences the same joy I do when my son excels at something or tries something new. I will never forget her and I will always be grateful for her. Thank you, teach. ❤

True. I left teaching because of the way we were treated by administrators and parents. Not worth the low pay. I regret the financial investment. Instead for 12 years I homeschooled my own kids who thrived. I loved it. Both graduated from college with high honors. My only requirement was that they did not pursue a degree in education

I would love to see a really through study done of just how well all of the teachers who got emergency certified did. I talking the ones who were in the military, the subs who became long term subs , code for the rest of the year, or came in through some back door much more lenient certification process. How many of them came back for their second year? What did their student's test scores look like? Were they places in subjects or grades that don't have tests? I would also like it to be aggregated for other information such as how much mentoring/help they received.

Tenured teacher here. Where I partially disagree with the sentiment here is that I don't have as high of esteem for my teacher training (that I went into debt for and spent years aquiring) as these two do. Some of it was helpful. Some of it was a waste of time and money. A good portion of it was well intentioned but wrong and damaging. And a goodly chunk of it was ideologically motivated, and much of the ideologically motivated material was evil.
