We crashed our plane - Good Bye Rhubarb
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In the summer of 2020 we took our little X-Air Falcon on its final flight, we had an engine failure at around 800ft, whilst the approach to our landing site was great it all came to a sudden end in the final moments.
The area of the engine failure has a lot of hazards on the ground that you cant see, lots of power lines and cables, the route we took was the safest path.
Rhubarb the X-Air has now been sold to a charity so he will be rebuilt and will fly another day. In his future is lots of flight training for children who would not otherwise be able to taste the pleasures of flight.

I have had a few people ask how they can help support the channel, the best way is to simply watch the videos, like, share, subscribe and keep on commenting. I do this channel for fun, filming the things I would be doing anyway.

Sorry but I am struggling to understand why there are so many comments saying you done well. I have never seen anybody perform a 180 degree turn literally as soon as the engine dies and without taking a look for any potential traffic. I'm not sure you actually know the poor glide rate of the aircraft either or even practiced any forced landings in it, as it was obvious you didn't have enough altitude to make the strip from either direction safely. In this situation you should have performed 1 or 2 S turns at 8:51 to lose some height, then land in the nice long field which doesn't have any sheep which you flew over at 9:06 and you would of had a nice landing. The last turn you made was which was encouraged by the passenger was extremely dangerous and the whole scenario shows you both have very poor judgement. Remember never to push your luck and try to make the field if you are not 100% certain you can make it. It's always better to spend a few hours recovering a complete aircraft from a farmers field than to smash it up. Hopefully you learnt something from this landing/accident for if it ever happens again.

I agree. While it is inevitable that humans will make mistakes, I wouldn't call this "well done", but rather a fine example to learn from. That turn into final had me clenching.

Should have landed straight ahead, they had room so I can’t see why she made the last-second left turn, and ran out of height to go level and flare. That thing glides like brick.

"A landing you can walk away from is a good landing....." Never a truer word spoken.
Brilliant that You were both so calm and composed , near perfect landing just unfortunate that the field let youz down. Really glad you're going for another aircraft and that it hasn't put either of you off .
Thank you for posting this video, that is not easy to do but it helps us all. When you look back you can probably think of all the things that you could of have done different, and that is not a valid thought. The surprise factor, the time left, the options to take, there is so much to consider in a few seconds time. You both did a wonderful job and walked away with no injuries, which is remarkable. I am so sorry about your airplane, so pretty and so well taken care of.
Thanks for having the confidence to publish this for us all to learn from.👍 As a fellow X’air driver it’s great to see how the airframe held up to what must have felt like a massive impact. Glad you are both OK & you get back in the air soon.

The Xair held up really well, we got away without even a bruise. They are great aircraft.
Outstanding! I'm glad everyone was ok. Hell of a landing
I'm glad nobody was hurt. Good luck with finding a new plane!
That's sad, not much you can do without an engine. Someone's pride and joy bit the dust 🙁

Yeah it is sad, but Rhubarb will be rebuilt and fly again. We are now looking for a new plane with a more modern 4 stroke motor.
I've read the report on this. I had a very similiar engine problem. I lost engine power at 85ft just after take off, it didn't shut off because as soon as it coughed a few times, I pulled it to idle and made the decieion to land. I did land and no injuries to Pax or me. The report for Rubarb will be almost identical to mine regarding engine setup / no electric fuel pump / vapour lock. Mine was also in September. It wasn't my aircraft, but I was PIC. The pilot here did a great job! X-Airs are bricks in the sky, when the engine goes. Nose down and don't stall it. She did a exceptional job here.
Good job. I was impressed with the way the undercarriage let go which reduced the overall impact. Hopefully there will be a video coming out from you guys with the results of pulling down the motor and finding out what actually let go
Huge difference between a training engine failure ans a real one. Well done.
Great job on the landing Leia! Absolutely nothing to apologize for! What caused the engine out?
Very sad but at least you are both safe and could walk away.
"I'm so sorry I thought we had that!" - you owned it well done. You did your job, Rhubarb did their job. Glad you're both safe 👍

I've told Leia I'm getting her that on a T-Shirt 🤣
WOW, From what I saw it was some nice flying to be able to land that with no motor. Im so Glad Your both ok. WOW...She did a Great job of landing it in that rough field..

The undercarriage on an XAir is superb, it soaked up all the impact, we didn't even get any aches or bruises. I'd happily fly with her again, well handled.
SHIT... my heart sank when the engine stopped. Cudos for you guys for staying so calm Sorry for the loss of the craft, but thankfully thats the only thing you lost
You are both save. EXCELLENT LANDING.
Nerves of steel! Apologising for a perfectly executed forced landing goes to show how great of a pilot Leia is.
Wow! Take my hat off to you both landing that and walking away from it.
Glad you were both safe 👍

Just glad it was the timer numbers inverted in your video and not yourselves
Ohh just watched this there now You are a lucky lot of people you did your job and kept use alive fairplay I would say rhubarb is missed
Glad that everyone was okay
Mmmm…..last minute landing site indecision almost never works out. Pick your field and stick with it all the way to the crash site!
If you can break the landing gear off of an X-air, then you know it was a VERY hard landing!!!

Taking off is optional, landing is mandatory. Glad it wasn't worse, RIP Rhubarb. Looks fixable though?
@StevesMachines

Yeah fixable, but off to a new owner for that.
Forced landing. could've, Should've, would've. Great job, you walked away.
No one hurt - all that matters
Change your mind is never a good idea. Still, walking away is a good thing!
certainly needs more training
4 Stroke engine next time? or are you sticking with the 2 stroke?

How can you get vapour lock in a fuel system that long after engine start????
@Guy_6397
3 ай бұрын
The fuel pipes running close to hot engine components can suffer from the fuel 'boiling' inside, which causes the vapor lock. I've experienced the same in an EV97
I am assuming only a lucky landing on a softish downhill slope is the only chance of landing two up with no engine power without snapping the wheels off ?
@StevesMachines

No you can land as normal, we were unlucky with a bit of rapid sink at the end so no time to flare for a soft landing.

It all looked as if it was planned, perfectly controlled landing and looks as if the plane was well designed to glide safely to terra-firma! What was your reason for not fixing the engine?
@StevesMachines
3 жыл бұрын
Lot of work, engine, under carriage, tail boom, wing checks etc. Just didn't fancy the stress. Will upgrade to a 4 stroke 😀
Do you know why the engine failed?

No mate, it's part of the risk with 2 strokes. CAA report suggested fuel vapour lock.
