We Couldn't Believe This Was Fox Suspension! [Shock Value Ep.1]
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We tested FIVE different suspension setups without knowing which setup we were driving, all on the same exact truck, in the same terrain. We wanted to know what setup was the best with NO biases. We were very surprised by the results!
Fox, King, Elka, Bilstein and Icon were all tested in this full review series shoot out.

Man, this series is SO valuable to the consumers!! I mean, I'm sure most of these issues could be fixed with a re-valving, but 99% of people buying shocks aren't going to care to go through that process.

That's a great point, but when companies like Accutune exist, it's a matter of sending one additional email to get them tuned/re-valved properly for little to no additional cost. I bought my fox 2.5 DSC elite series from them, had them tuned, and ready in just over a week. Same for the rear 12" shocks I just ordered from them. I can't imagine a better on/offroad setup than what I have now.
holy balls so jealous you guys beat us to the punch on this - awesome series, cant wait to see the whole thing! Great job Ian!

Do it! More comparisons are always good. Maybe leave the sway bar connected. Most people who do a little wheeling and use their truck as a daily driver will not remove the sway bar. How about adding a towing test? Another interesting test would be panic/emergency swerving testing that the gov does...the test to see if trucks and SUVs roll over.

You guys should do it with a full size truck. My buddy says his fox 2.5s perform great on his tundra unlike the taco from this vid
Can’t wait to see the rest and be “shocked” at the results.
After seeing this I’m going with Kings. Foxs’ response about a future redesign shows that they know it’s a problem yet they are still putting them out.
Thanks for doing this testing guys! I am currently looking for shocks on my Taco, so I'll be watching each episode.
Please continue this testing and adding shock setups to the leader board! Bilstein 6112, Rancho, 2.0 series, Stock, Remote resi vs not for each, etc.
It would be cool to see the same series of videos but with all the shocks tuned properly. Can't wait for the next video!
I loved Braeden’s facial expression when they hit the whoops! Great vid! I’m currently shopping for a new suspension upgrade for my Taco.
Love that you guys did this series! I can't wait for all of the episodes. You guys hit the nail on the head, so many people swear their suspension is the best when their only comparison is stock, and everyone's perception of what is comfortable is different so having the same truck, with the same people comparing is awesome - keep up the great work!
This shock break down and comparison is long overdue. !! Thank you
We the off road viewers love this stuff, thank you…. Like any science project there are variables…. The biggest may be the weight of the loaded vehicle and where that weight is located…. And I still like watching this stuff keep it up! And kudos to the sponsor for buying all that gear…. Can I get a bid on the Bils. When your done😊
Been waiting for a video like this! Great idea guys! Glad someone is actually giving some feedback on how the ride quality is in the truck with the suspension installed.
I absolutely love that you guys are doing this! I've been sharing and looking forward to seeing what the rest of the series brings to the table. I'm a +1 for someone finding a full list of testing on all platforms. 😂😂
This series is such a fresh approach. Thanks for putting it together. I'm looking forward to the future episodes.
I have a stock 2023 4Runner ORP and I have been thinking about the King suspension. These suspension tests are perfect. Keep the videos coming.
I first got the 2.5 DSC on my tundra for the rear noticed less body roll by a lot which was kinda surprising. Then installed the front after a few weeks, it was stuff but lowered the preload and it was nice!! Then after another while, I wanted more out of it and played with the DSC, and I seemed to make it better. After taking out off-road I was super happy how smooth it was fast and slow off-road. I almost got king non adjustables but slapped myself why would I spend so much money and not be adjustable, but sadly they were on back order for months. So I got the FOX. Glad I went adjustable! 🎉
This is incredible quality. It makes me so happy to see that this exists. Thank you for investing the time and money!
I’m loving this channel, just found it a few days ago. Keep it up!
Stoked for this series! Looking to upgrade to 2.5s from my OME’s
Guys thank you for doing that unbiased tests. I will save the series in my 4Runner folder for future references when time comes to upgrade. Greetings from Yellowknife 🇨🇦
Great episode! Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Just bought my fox coilovers for the Tundra...........Thanks for the test great stuff
Thanks for doing this review 🤙 hit the nail on the head with doing a multiple item review. Thank you❤
Super pumped for this series. I have 5100’s on my tundra and they are ok but im already researching my next upgrade
Love this series. Looking forward to the next one.
Dudes.. so stoked for this series!
I’m pumped for this series.
Absolutely loving this! Keep it going, you guys work great together. Pulling out the true data in its purists form. Testing and breaking through pre conceived notions. 🙌🏼💯
Interesting, thank you… More to come 🙋🏼
Awesome, keep testing.
Great content guys! Nice to see a video that’s not sponsored by the brand your trying to sell. looking forward to see which one is the best!
This is by far the most informational Tacoma video I have watched. Can’t wait until the series is over so it can help my purchase
This is gonna be a goooood series 🤘
Great video! Looking forward to the rest of them. Any plans to put dobinson in the mix in a future video/series? It’d be cool to see the MRR shock and how much real world adjustment you can actually get out of the compression and rebound adjusters. But I maybe that shock line doesn’t make sense for this comparison. So the IMS shock instead?
I had a similar experience with Fox. I switched from Old Man Emu to Fox 2.5 Factory Series and my initial thought was that they ride great on road but as soon as you hit small bumps they are pretty stiff. The thing I've noticed is that after a long trail Fox made me less fatigued which is what I was hoping for. On trial rides they are amazing compared to the OMEs. They soaked up the larger bumps really well. Just not so well on small bumps. Weird I guess. So Id say my experience was similar.
Great content and editing!
Congrats on ep 1! 🎉
This kind of confirmed my experience with my shocks. I got Fox 2.5 with dsc for my 1st Gen Tacoma, and I’ve found that it rides really stiff, and it feels like the valving isn’t quite right. I’m looking to have it re-valved soon to a much softer tune.

I’m in the same boat with my 1st gen Tacoma. I even went thru the effort of having them tuned with Accutune. How they described the ride in the video is exactly what I feel with mine, especially the on-road experience. I think I would rather have the stock setup than the fox DSCs. Have you done anything different since?

This is great guys!
Awesome!!! Can’t wait to see more.
Great series👍😉 Lake Havasu 🌞 Az
This is a great series!
This is really interesting. Blind testing is awesome for these shocks
So stoked for this series. Would have been interesting to throw some 6112 in there to see how they perform compared to the bigger bodied brothers for the price, especially after hearing how bad these fox's were.
This was very interesting, I am wondering if there was too much spring rate on the shocks. My king 2.5’s were worse offroad then my stock trd sport suspension until I put bigger 34 inch tires and it handled much better.
Dude! Looking forward to the next episode.
I have these on my Tacoma. I feel this is spot on. They are good at 3mph and controlled and comfortable on rough dirt roads at 70mph. Everything else sucks. One of mine has had a horrible clank/clunk sound at droop.
Thank you for doing this right with no bias 🤘🇨🇦
Looking forward to the final results
lol man these videos are awesome love the honesty my dudes!!!
Appreciate the real world testing ! New subscriber from Lahore, Pakistan
This one surprised me!
I agree and I am a fox fan boy. But without adjusters they aren’t great. Custom valving and adjusters on top of that help so much. Oddly I find that their 2.0 series to be amazing, but the standard 2.5 to be too stiff. I believe that is because they pair it with a 600 pound spring and valve it as if you will be consistently jumping your truck, hence why I won’t buy them without adjusters and revalved to my driving style and application. I’ve also found that when you wear them in a bit the ride improves.
Awesome Content!!!
A bilstein 6112 comparison with fox and others would be awesome as well
Excellent series. Really appreciate the time and effort your taking to do this… really really hope it 10x your subs cuz it deserves it! Only comment I have is if you could mention which ones are adjustable vs not adjustable…. And if adjustable what setting it was at? Also… front coil weight out of curiosity. Again… this is seriously the best and most honest comparisons I’ve seen anyone do for Toyotas.

Thank you! We hope so too haha! We chose to do NO adjustable shocks, I thought we mentioned it in the intro video but maybe we forgot. We wanted to test each company's base tune without any way to muck it up.
This is going to be an awesome series. Would you guys add the IronMan FoamCell Pro suspension to the mix?

that kit is not comparable with any of these lol
Wow I ordered the 2.5 fox for my ram 1500. It’s a heavier truck but I’m nervous now. 😅. I was between the fox and the kings but called king and they had horrible customer service; I called fox and they took their time on answering all my questions and gave me great advice and was super nice guy. went for the fox because of him.

customer service is a big part of the decision making process for sure! I've typically had the opposite experience as a shop, which is why we wanted to do these tests unbiased!
I would totally watch more shock comparisons on different vehicle platforms 10:27
I subscribed just because of this video. Thanks.
Would be very interested to see you guys review Ironman 4x4 suspension and see what kind of opinion you have towards them
You should do a video where you re-valve each of them and then retest! I wonder if they assume people will add weight to their trucks and valve them accordingly. Tuning them would level the playing field and isn’t an unreasonable amount of money for as expensive as these shocks are!
Wow and I just ordered fox coil overs can you test the dial settings
I wonder how much of it really comes down to valving? I have the same coil overs in front and the 12 inch smoothie in the rear and had it valved for my set up at accutune. I take it to anza and ocotillo all the time and I love the way it rides. Also I DID noticed a decent amount of body roll without the sway bar lol, but still rides better without it.
@OverlandOutfitters

Basically what we are testing almost completely comes down to valving. Most people won't be custom valving their suspension, so this is out of the box. We can tune suspension for anybody in either of our shops though!
@Toastert4co
Жыл бұрын
that's funny. I've got a similar setup from Accutune with the Fox 2.5 DSCs up front and soon to be Archive relocation and 12 inch rear on my 14' Tacoma. Even with just the front being upgraded, it handles ocotillo/anza incredibly well. Definitely stiffer than stock, but it's well worth it when you feel how much support you get when things get rowdy. Nice to have a local shop that specializes in shock tuning...
ditto to the comments I can't wait for the other reviews as I'm looking to upgrade my current suspension. Thanks from south of the Canadian border
High mileage (aka 60 mile driving) driving test along with everything you did would be a good review
thanks for doing this =)
Would of been cool if you guys tested the rough country vertex set up since they're a cheap set up, compared to fox, kings
Stuff like this is critical like you addressed in the video, forum comments are only a small snapshot into overall performance. I would have assumed Fox would have been the most dialed!
Would it of made any difference with the performance if the truck was carrying more weight (500lbs)? Such as a decked drawer system along with a roof top tent, prinsu rack, etc?
I use kings because kings are the king hahaha but fox came out with a set of shocks that’s tuned for the Tacoma. Give those a try I hear they are much better then the performance series.
Always, ALWAYS, get your 2.5s tune. Out the box tuning is trash. Accutune offroad does amazing work.
The all-pro house brand coilovers ride amazing in my 01 Tacoma even better then my Kings.
Ready to see if the eibach2r system is the best 2.0 you can buy?
It seems that the spring rate was too high based on how fast the suspension was rebounding (air time over the whoops), and the compression didn't look like full stroke on some of the footage. Softer springs could make a huge difference in plushness. What was the sag percentage on this suspension setup?
Can you plaese make a video explaining and comparing valving. Amount of zones,Low,mid, high speed... on/off road..... tow/payloads..... highway/city cornering swaying...... abc 123 thank for informative videos. Ps possibly throw in spring type combo/ AIR SPRING AND SHOCK USAGE!!!!! VERY OPEN MARKET
As others have said, maybe the shock needs to be broken in. Could you do that with shock dyno?
He was “SHOCKED”…. 😆
Did you guys ever get any sort of response from fox after this review? Not that you asked them for one. But im just wondering if, as a company known for quality performace suspension, they took this into account and made any changes to the valving.
I have Fox 2.5's on my 2nd gen Tacoma. At first they were terrible, but now that they are "broken in" I can't imagine anything riding or performing better. This isn't to take anything away from any other manufacturer, just sharing real-life data that it seems like they seemed to take a while to feel right. It could also be that the springs take longer to settle which leads you to think it's the shocks. I still don't know because I'm not a shock vendor or a bigtime KZreadr to test them all. And forgive if I missed the part of the video talking about DSC adjusters but it looks like your Fox's dont have adjusters while the Elkas and Icons do. Not a perfect 1:1 comparison there, could be that your Fox's just have a bad valving setup. Cheers.

We didn't test any suspension with adjusters to keep it fair
Literally had these shocks in my cart with the Cognito arm. This video has DETERRED me from making the purchase. Thank you 🙏🏽
I wouldve loved to see you guys run these through barstow main🤣🤣
Does this Fox shocks have the DSC adjuster? Because you can adjust the compression and rebound to really dial them.

None of the shocks tested have adjusters to keep it fair
Only 2 minutes in and the only issue I have with this is my coils broke in another a few thousand miles and the ride got much better.
I hope you guys do Dobinsons
Is this fox suspension the same thing as the ones that come on a TRD PRO?
What is the setting front and rear?thanks
What size of tires you got on that truck?
WHAT! No way. I am looking at the Fox 2.5 Factory…but I am going to reconsider. What Fox shocks were you NVM. Gonna check the previous video for the model. When is the next video? What about the other shocks?!

Great video I just hope you didn’t find out they were fox till after all the shocks were tested. As that would narrow down what it could be giving it a biased opinion. But I look forward to the rest of the videos these will become some of the most popular shock videos on KZread im sure!

Nope, all the shocks were revealed after all testing had been done
Sick fucking video , more please
So which Fox shocks were these?
shit i just ordered a fox performance elite set up... are they going to suck?
I have these very same shocks in my 22 4Runner (with the adjustable valves). And yes, your impressions are correct lol I came from Bilstein 6112 front and 5100 rears. And compared to those, the FOX are bouncier, and bottom out less. But they do feel about as harsh over the small stuff and over broken pavement. They do corner great, after I got my suspension dialed in (new track bar, link arms, etc). But are they worth 4x more than the $1,000 Bilstein set I had before? NOPE. And I honest to god could NOT recommend it to some one, unless they are ok with a tiny level of improvement on their shocks and they have money to throw away. Not to mentioned i had issues with the valves being stuck out of the box, and I had to sent them in for warranty repairs right away to get that fixed. If I had to do it all over again, I would go with something cheaper, more comfortable for long Overland trips and spend the rest of the money on other suspension parts like control arms, bump stops, link arms, etc. But they do look cool, so I guess that's that
