Spring-summer are best to visit Serbia for sure

Sicevo gorge near Niš and Jerman canyon are the nicest places in Serbia!!!

When it comes to mythology, mysticism, and religions, oaks have been, and still are, the most important trees for the Serbian people. The roots of worshipping oak trees come from the Slavic, pantheistic period , and they have prevailed until today. Old oaks are often sacred trees in villages and hamlets. However, young oaks also have an important role as part of Christmas customs. In every house, a young oak tree is used as a бадњак (badnjak), a ceremonial tree, which the people refer to as a person rather than a tree .The badnjak tree is gathered in the morning or afternoon on the 6th of January (Christmas Eve in the Julian calendar). In villages all over Serbia, it is still a living custom for people to cut down their own trees, while in cities, badnjaks are usually bought in the street markets. Usually, the elders in the family cut the tree. Once the oak is cut down, they would say some short prayers and pour some wine and rakia (fruit brandy) on the stump together with some bread and corn. The chips of wood that come off the tree during cutting with an axe are taken back home as they are an important part of tradition to ensure wellbeing during the following year. It should be noted that all the mentioned customs may vary substantially between regions or even villages, and this account is just from my personal experience.

Christmas is called bozhic brown trees they carry is used on Christmas you light it up its our custom its called Badnjak

We did! An interesting place. We also visited the Crveni Krst concentration camp which was a very sad to learn about what Serbs went through during the war! Nis is a great city with great people 👍

Its a pitty that you come in the winter in spring much better

First to say I am not religious and I am strongly against religions. I presume you are Protestants. Orthodox church is original one,like Catholic too. They were founded together,but along the way separate in 2 directions-western and eastern. Western-catholic,Eastern-Orthodox. Orthodox stayed with the same principals and learning as when the christianity is founded,and catholic changed along the way and that was the main reason why they separate in 2 directions. So,Orthodox remain as ONLY original christian church,the founder of christianity. If the Orthodox church celebrate christmas like this,that means that is original and only right way. Protestants and rest of the others directions in christianity change it totally and completly. So,you should learn how it is originaly done and what is the right way. You said it is nice to know how christmas is celebrated in other countries. But,you didnt know this is the original,only legit way of only legit founder of christianity-Orthodox church. You should learn first from the basics of the basics,from Orthodox church,if you are a true christian,not concider it like some tourist attraction for you,like you are in some exotic country in Asia and you are suprised in what way they celebrate christmas. Your perspective is totally wrong.

We are not religious but have grown up with the calendar being all we have known so it was interesting for us to learn about the different way Christmas is celebrated in Serbia. That doesn’t mean there is a right and wrong way, it’s dependent on people’s beliefs. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the vlog!

@@AshAndDan. That is good if you are not religious. But your tone and way of looking at how Serbians celebrates christmas is like they doing it wrong and there is a sneer and you ridicule it a little bit and it is obvious in video,so do not deny it,you making it worse.

I really don't care about religions,but if you are in foreign country don't comment such a important happening to local people,before you learn and research about it before you speak. It will backfire at you,like we see in this example. You are in foreign country and you speak about their deepest and most important thing in that way,and that is very unpleasant to watch.
