Gas is no fun, no matter if in a boat or an RV ! Prevent chafing (as explained below), mount the pipe correctly and get the whole system pressure-tested at least once a year. Maybe you will have some issues in the future by cutting the pipe with a metalsaw. That's not the right way because tiny bits from the cutting can block the membrane in your pressure-reducer or the orifice in the burner. There is a special (cheap) tool for cutting copper wires for gas or coolant installations that cuts the pipe just by pressure without ANY debris. Good luck and best regards from Berlin, Germany

Hiya Robbo, Couldn't agree more. I put these stainless p clips with rubber all along the pipe. I think a rubber sleeve is needed for the bulkheads, which is yet to be added. Thank you for the advice. We'll do a little update on next weeks episode. Cheers for watching 😃

Glad to see you have a decent cooker now. I hope I did not see you putting PTFE tape on the compression fittings for the valve. That is a no no and totally unnecessary. Those fittings are made to be used without tape. Thread tape is made to seal tapered threads and not the parralel threads on gas fittings which are not sealing faces. It is the olive on the pipe that does the sealing. Will be good when you get a few sole boards in even if only temporary ones. ATB regards from the UK

We formerly lived on a boat (Falmouth) one couple were blown clean out the boat one night another, well they wern't so lucky. I developed a healthy fear of gas in boats. I am sure your fine but the heavier than air gas collects in the bilge til it comes in contact with a spark then it explodes. Fire extinguishers and blankets wont save you from this. Get gas detectors and get some monoxide detectors. Oh and finding leaks with bubbles, fill a squirt/spray bottle with soapy water that works better.... Love the vids and keep at it!

On the gas valve: Check out the blog. Far Reach is a Cape Dory 36 that was completely gutted and built back up. Among the safety features is his gas valve. The valve itself is out in the propane tank locker. But he has connected this to a rigid metal rod that runs all the way into the galley where a turn knob is attached, so that he can turn it on and off remotely. This way if the valve ever leaks the gas will go overboard through the locker's overboard vent.

Everyone is saying (rightly so) you need to use clips to mount that pipe.. the more the better, plus we normally don’t use hacksaw’s to cut copper pipes especially gas.. but you know now.. so brace that pipe and call it done.. check for leaks with soapy water every so often at the joints.. atleast until it proves sealed, the issue is gas falls and technically you mounted pipe work above potential naked flame.. not really “up to specs”

  • @SailingSeabird

    @SailingSeabird

    7 ай бұрын

Hiya, It's funny as I've used these p-clip things to hole the copper pipe but I thought it was just standard so didn't film that. You can't just have a pipe banging and rubbing. Who would have thought that us not showing me screwing clips on would cause such debate. Bulkhead protection needed! Looks like that's my weekend job... Cheers for watching 😃

@@SailingSeabird Yeah, everyone is an expert.. I tried not to comment but i do hold a LPG fitter’s license so it was difficult not to.. If you weren’t living in there, Which i keep hoping someone is going to loan you guys a nice caravan.. it would have been great to remove all them cupboards and route that pipe from the gas locker along the sole to a flexible bayonet fitting right behind the cooker.. then re-laminate the cupboards outside and simply reinstall them.. or even simply paint them in a lighter colour, the logic being you will be screwing the P brackets on the tabbing for the sole, making a much neater job.. but it’s kinda done now, And another thing, when testing for leaks, you should dilute the soap, thick pure soap is really tricky to find a leak.. diluted and a spray bottle? Much easier… but the basic rule when playing with LPG is from the flex at the bottle go straight down as quickly as possible to the lowest level then to the cooker.. install the gas shut off and a detector at the gas locker, and another Gas/carbon monoxide detector in the bilge but high enough it’s not getting wet.. then you’re fine, it would pass inspection (because you “didn’t touch it, it was always there”) but more importantly you know it’s done correctly, I’ve given you guy’s advice before, But only on subjects I’m actually qualified by trade. Kindest regards Trev.

According to the regulations, you should not have any joints, valves, etc. on your propane line inside the boat. You need to have an electrically operated solenoid on the tank, with a switch inside, to cut the gas. In some places there also needs to be a gas detector in the boat that will automatically turn off the gas solenoid.

Looks like a nice job of the gas line, as good as any professional would manage. Was that also a gas alarm that you were buying at the hardware store? They’re required here in Oz by law and I’ve just used a 12v battery operated one, I’ve also run a gas drain from the bottom of the gas locker overboard with a venturi cover on the outside of the hull - definitely don’t drain it into the cockpit as someone else suggested as that can possibly just flow down into the engine room and/or cabin via any hatches that you might have there.

Can I suggest an inline pressure valve at the gas locker end? No use for assessing the amount of gas you have but splendid for monitoring if you develop leaks. I have ones on both the boat and caravan and I have identified leaks with both. Every time you turn off the gas at the bottle linger a while and watch if the pressure decays rapidly or is maintained. Another step forward! Will be interesting to see which is cheaper to use going forward, gas or electric. Go well. ❤

Reading these comments has been fun. A lot of "you haven't thrown enough money at it yet" stuff. From some of your replies it seems you have done more since the video anyway. Hard to show _everything_. The range of thoughts on cookers in boats is wide. Some people won't use gas and insist on alcohol, others hate alcohol (starting a fire in a cup to heat the burner so it will even run can be scary in a closed space). Yes propane (I should say gas I guess) can be dangerous, kinda like crossing the street, but it seems the main thing always comes down to "shut it off at the bottle when you are done". However, we all install valves close to the stove and, being lazy, we all use them :) Check for leaks often, use your nose, use a gas detector but also remember they quit sometimes too. Might be worth using a bilge exhaust blower (like the power boats do) but I don't know anyone that does. You're big girls and boys, I am sure you can take care of yourself. Many blessings, thank you for being willing to endure lots of comments. ;)

Hiya, Gas and boat is a huge debate. I think it's just horses for courses. We've always had gas on our boats. A gas monitor is on order. The gas locker drains and is sealed from the rest of the boat. We have smoke and carbon alarms. Plus we are quite careful... It's a tough one. Cheers for watching 😃

Hi there, unfortunately I want to warn you both this time...As you know by now the way you put in the gas pipe is totally wrong and seriously DANGEROUS! If you have the system checked by an inspector ( for insurance purposes for instance) this system will NOT pass! YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE CHANCES with this installation, so I really hope you take the really good advice, given by several people below here in the comment section, to heart! DO NOT LEAVE THIS UNATTENDED PLEASE! Loved the video again, and I'm looking forward to the next one! From Amsterdam, Stephan.

Hi Stu, i understand that you are proud of your job, and you are rightly so! But, you need to fix the gas pipe with clamps with a distance of 1 foot apart from each other. Furthermore, you need every through hole padded, so the pipe can NOT chafe anywhere! Best is to fix the pipe that it's impossible to move and/or chafe anywhere. Chafing wil corrupt the pipe, and gas will leak out, and possibly ignite while you are cooking! Also, because the pipe is hanging free now, it's prone to metal fatigue. You also need a hole through the bottom of the compartment that can spill out of your boat (overboard).. Gas is heavier than air, so it will collect at the bottom of the compartment, or otherwise spill over into your living space! ( like water, it will find a way to leak inside your boat!). Bare in mind that Copper is a really soft metal, so it will chafe through way faster then you might think! You can scrape through it with a basic kitchen knife in minutes! I really hope you will adres these issues Stu, both your lifes are at risk if you don't. And please do not think that I am making it look worse than it is.Google it, you will find out that my ( and from others) suggestions are in your best interest. Safety first Stu 🙂 And yes, I really like your video's, the determination you both have, is inspiring! Take care!

I mean the compartment you keep the gas bottle in, that compartment needs a drain hole that spills outside your boat, overboard.

Hiya, That's for the reply. There are clamps holding the pipe. Little stainless p clips with rubber. Probably a bit more than a foot, I'll check and add a few more. The locker is also vent to the outside of the boat with a 19mm hose. I didn't show this as I just thought it was a standard to gas installation. A few people have mentioned that you can't use a hose clamp, what I've been reading g is that it's ok if it's within the gas locker. I didn't use a bulkhead fitting but the pipe is sealed, I like... Thanks for your help on this. Cheers for watching 😃

The gas locker should have ventilation from below, perhaps you have chosen not the best of the lockers for the location of the cylinder. Please add an electric valve to a cylinder locker! Please call a professional to check your gas line, what you did, doesn't look right and reliable, even if it works right now.

Hiya, Of course the gas locker is vented for the bottom. At a later stage I'll vent it from the top too. I've worked on a few gas projects with a mate (a gas engineer) plus my apartment and I'm confident this is above code. Cheers for watching 😃

How is flexible hose not safe? In my experience on boats your more likely to have issues with rigid pipe than flexible hose.

Good job again, i must say iam kind of worried about your use of teflon tape (Poly Tetra Fluor Etheen). its not suposed to be used on these fittings. the seal is to be made by a rubber o-ring or a metal cone.

It seems to be the UK standard on the gas. In an ideal world, I wouldn't have a hose clip. It lasted for many years on the last boat and I'm sure it will be ok on this boat. Only time will tell. Cheers for watching.

Spent a good bit of today all in horrible positions, cleaning out some of the lazarettes and other hard to access areas in the boat. So difficult as I am 6'4". Boats aren't made for us big people. Sore in such strange areas at this point in the evening.
