Directors note: the video was originally 50 mins long but a lot of things were cut out due to time constraints. Had we had more time/budget with the truck we would have done quite a few things differently. The most notable are we would have used four non tesla motors and more battery power to alleviate the single shaft/single motor design which wasn’t our first choice but budget/time prevented us from getting too crazy, still very effective as it able to pull 100+ tons with 700lbs in the bed. But still a design choice we wouldn’t have originally chosen, but It’s a hell of a rowdy truck!

Rich -- One other thing you can do on the next one, (if you build something with an LS and another np205 for example): Is to convert that np205 to "Twin stix". It actually will have three shifters in the transfer case (on the floor). You'll have the usual high and low; and then you have two other shifters (one for each axle): that allow you to engage/ disengage the front AND/OR rear axle as you wish, on the fly. This allows you to perform a "front dig"-- which is where you disengage the rear axle (and lock your rear E-brake)-- and engage the front axle only: And you turn your wheel a bit and as you get on the throttle the front wheels will pull you in a tight circle, pivoting on your rear wheel. It's a pretty cool offroad trick when you have the "twin stix" setup; and will get you out of a jam in tight places. Super worth it if you build a trail truck that YOU actually plan on using a lot. It's a must upgrade. You can only do the conversion with an NP205 or an Atlas transfer csse, as far as I know.

I've been a Ford guy since High School (I'm 50) so I remember times I was pissed off when people stuck a Chevy 350 or some LS BS in a Ford chassis... after several years I understood the ease, interchangeable and availability of parts made that option a near "no brainer". After 30 years, I just say fuck it. Make what you want and have fun. I spent years being asked why I would spend so much effort building inline six 300cid engines, instead of just dropping in a small block. Now I understand how it feels being questioned about someone questioning my choice or passion.

The intro to really resonates with me. I’m working on rebuilding the rusted out hull of a 50’s Jeep and converting it to electric, and the comment section has made it clear to me that people have very strong feelings about this subject. You can take a classic, swap out literally every part and call it a “restomod” and that cool, but the moment you put an electric motor in it, they say it’s ruined? Beautiful job ruining….er I mean converting this one. You’ve got a very talented team.

Back when "gasolene" vehicles first arrived on the scene, how do you think they were shipped? By STEAM locomotives and STEAM ships. Technology changeovers don't happen overnight. When big airplane piston engines were reaching their end they added jet engines to the piston engines, then they eventually deleted the piston engines. In Europe electric cars ARE shipped via electric trains.

Rich is right.. (23:50). You don't want to pull in 4low. Chad is correct that it puts less stress on the little output shaft, but everything AFTER the transfer case is multiplied in torque, due to the lower gear raito. So the drive shafts and inner axle shafts, or even the transfer case itself will definitely explode if someone is too heavy stomping the throttle in 4low, especially under a huge load like sand, mud or towing.

Dude Rich? I just watched the first episode of that show on HBO max and i am still impressed and for you to be the first episode in Robert Downey Jr's show??? Thats king status. I know it probably doesn't matter? But im proud of you as well impressed. Dude you do such amazing work and im wanting now to figure out how to EV convert my 1964 Volkswagen bug. I was so excited at the end of that episode it was freaking amazing. I've been watching your channel for years and its awesome seeing you progress throughout the years. I bet your channel will blow up even bigger now congrats for being on Robert's show. He must have been a blast to have been talking and hanging around with. Good job man good job.

@@nordic5490 you can do some clever torque vectoring. I dont think adding an axle, gears, and a differential above the spring of the tire helps with unsprung mass. It would actually help lower the C.O.G... in turn acc improving handability. Plus you have instant torque and no gear losses.

With the $x4 driving ,do you have to extra weather/waterproof the electric engine or is the factory seal good enough for ,say mudholing etc. Does the motor also need a breather tube?

Not really until prices for the parts go down considerably witch wont happen since already those batteries are made with slave labor, cant really go cheaper than that and batteries degrade even when sitting. In gas or diesel engine it can sit for decade or two and only thing degrading is seals and belts. On the good oldies even those are non issue since you can make your own seals etc rather easily. Just went trough 2store engine that had sat in garage unused for 20 years. Mild cleaning, sanding the points, replacing gas lines and one pull for it to start.. Try that with EV that has sat 20years...

@@TNRVG I thought so to, makes sense when you think about how heavy&powerful they are. Working in such confined spaces as stadiums. I've wondered tbh with evs using their conventional friction brakes so much less, Thanks to great regen capabilities. Example the newest gen 3 forums e cars have NO rear hydraulic brake discs at all. Only use the rear motor regen combined with front motor regen and then front discs when needed. Even then they claim over half of all braking events can be handled just by the regen itself. In a conventional road going ev it can be over 90% of ALL braking happens through regen only. So I wonder why more evs aren't bringing the brakes inboard&deleting the rears? If a 200+mph 600hp 1,400# race car doesn't need rear discs why does any much less capable road going ev need them. Also servicing ev brakws is 3x or longer the intervals as ice vehicle's. Then with inboard brakes you would also get much better polar moment of inertia for handling. Plus you could design some true aero wheels without being constrained by brake cooling concerns. 🤔

As soon as you put this in low range and even half way touch the throttle--- U-joints are going to check out of life. lol.. It looks like it has 1 ton (8 lug) axles, so I'm sure it can handle a lot.. Hopefully you guys upgraded the axles to chrome moly; but you really have to be carful on the throttle while in low range. Nice build though.
