I’m looking into going back to a 68-71 GMC or Chevy like my old 69 C20. I sold it decades ago running but heavily rusted out. I still see several local to me all the time and driving that old beast with the three on the tree was an experience. I have an 18 ram 1500 that has less than 40k mileage. It has had a lot go wrong on it. If it wasn’t under warranty stuff like the gas tank spontaneously leaking and all the electronic issues that never seem to end, it would’ve be a money pit. Beauty of a truck I can’t deny but reliability is shit with all the plastic fantastic. I know my experience might be unique but I’ve had 5 Mopar cars and only my 08 Town&Country never gave me problems. Can’t wait for my 69 Mustang to be done so I can ditch the constant worry of “what’s going to break next month”.

I paid 31k for a mostly standard f 150 4x4 regular cab/8ft bed 4 years ago. It was stickered at 34/35k, rebates brought it down to 28900 than I added a few items so it brought it to 31k. It's either pay 30k for a true pickup truck or pay 45k plus for a supercab with a small 5.5 ft bed. I prefer the former. It's what I grew up with...and what a pickup truck is supposed to be ..

What really is surprising is I bought a 2021 tundra Trd pro for $48,800 out the door. I thought that was expensive. It is mind-boggling that there are trucks now going for $70,000 even $90,000. This is what inflation does it destroys everyone’s ability to buy things at a reasonable price. But clearly nobody gave a crap at the midterms. The insanity will now continue.

10 years ago, I bought a Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Crew Cab 4x4 ST Diesel Long Box for my business. The sticker price on that truck was nearly $52,000, but the negotiated price was ~$38,500. Only options were power locks (no keyless entry), the 4.8L V8, and tow package. Paid $6k (about $8400 in today's dollars). Did a search on Autotrader yesterday for an equivalent chevy pickup and couldn't find one anywhere for less than $22k (a 2015ish Silverado standard cab short bed with a V8 and about 100k miles).

Right? What do people think happens to those fresh paint jobs? I did it on my NEW truck not because of concerns of bed appearance, but for the increased strength, the texture to keep things from sliding about and the long term protection of the metal. (rust preventative) But it does make it look nice too. lol I have done the rubber mats, the slide in plastic liners and even not done anything. And the spray in liners are the best way to go.

  • @CadgerChristmasLightShow

I've never bought a brand new truck, but I would imagine a spray on bedliner is something you can add any time no matter how scratched the original paint gets. So just use it how it is and years later maybe spray a bed liner on. I have a 1993 mazda b2600 mini truck with no bedliner and it has no rust and doing fine. It does have what's essentially a thick rubber matt for the bottom of the bed, but the inner sides are the original paint, no issues with it at all

For those saying it’s too much money and trucks are overpriced, do a little research. $41k today is $13k in 1982. In 1982 the base price of a Dodge D150 4WD was $9300. And that had no power features, no AC, no remote start, no radio, no Carpet, no headliner, and a whopping 95 horsepower. You could have easily added $4000 in options and still not have features that are standard on this truck, and no amount of money would have bought you 305 horsepower from the factory. This base model truck has more equipment than my loaded 2001.

I have a 2015 Ram Big Horn 2wd regular cab long bed. Big screen, nice stereo, heated seats and steering wheel, tow package, limited slip rear differential, chrome package 3.6l v-6. It is very quick and tows our 22 ft 4,500 lb travel trailer surprisingly well. It is smooth and quiet and has a 1,900 pound payload capacity. I added leather seats, a bed rug, a tonneau cover, Bilstein shocks and dual rate rear springs and I can see keeping this truck for another 20 years! Cost out the door was under $27,000 back in July 2015.

I have a’21 Warlock 4x4 with the 3.6. When I first got the truck, hated the throttle response and felt there was significant lag between pressing the pedal and anything happening. Bought a pedal monster and it completely changed the personality of the truck. Much more lively feel and no mpg penalty. I highly recommend this mod!

@Renee Garcia. I researched these before buying. There were some models with a small incidence of failure. Typically these were models that got their power from the pedal circuit which is very low voltage. If they do fail, as long as you can pull off the road, they can be removed and the vehicle put back to stock in a couple minutes.

In the mid-80s I needed four-wheel drive for Winter commuting but I'm a cheap SOB. Bought the cheapest four-wheel drive pickup on the market and it was FANTASTIC. Was it set up for mudding and rock crawling? No, but that's not what I needed the truck for. I had a long commute and four-wheel drive gave me peace of mind. I Know TFL crew didn't custom order this truck but the best deal on the tradesman classic is the Tradesman off road group. For only $745 you get, 3.55 axle, Rear mechanical Locker, Front suspension skidplate, Yokohama LT26570R17 E rated tires, raised ride height, rear extra HD shocks, tow hooks and transfercase skidplate. That has to be the best bargain of the century! My niece has a 2022 Ram classic 1500 with the Tradesman Off Road Package, and she loves it. Has taken it up in the mountains of Southern Utah and the truck has handled everything off road, so far with ease and confidence. Lt tires really help with the rocks encountered and extra confidence you have as all season P tires are sketchy, in these circumstances.

As for the comments about it being low and the approach angle, most 4x4s are not built for offroading, they have 4-wheel-drive for road use during the winter when it snows. It wasn't a 4x4 but in 2005 I bought a new Dodge Ram Rumble Bee which is basically a decked-out souped-up version of this model. I loved it and wished a few times that I would have kept it.

Chrome, tow, carpet, keyless, 5 inch Uconnect, just about the same options as this truck. Mine does have the skid plate package and tow hooks. Sad to see that inflation has made the little V6 gas truck almost as expensive. This one looks like a fun little truck, and at that price you can afford to add aftermarket lift/skid plates / bumpers.

I've got the same engine in my grand caravan. It's never lacked for power, even towing a heavy trailer with 6 on board packed for vacation. Or hauling a heavy load of firewood in a trailer. The truck is obviously heavier than the van, but I don't think you'll have much to complain about. In the van I can see 25 mpg on long interstate rides with the cruise set to 75, and the family on board. If dodge builds a compact pickup in the maverick arena, the grand caravan platform would be an excellent choice.
