We Bought + Built a Costco Shed Kit. Was It A Good Deal? Here is our Review!

We bought a shed kit from the big box store, thinking it would save us time over a from-scratch build, and save us $$$ over having a shed company come build one.
Here’s how it went, the ups and downs, and whether we’d recommend this kit and this process to others.

@9:56 Anyone with a screwdriver can quickly get in by removing the bracket on the one side. Replace the Phillip screws with one-way security screws. Also, using a long lock makes it easier to cut/break. On a positive...the shed turned out great!

The reason you use nails vs screws is because of their holding power not just because they're less expensive. They have more shear strength which means they will move with the structure in the wind as opposed to screws which will simply snap. Screws are great for floor boards and in cases where strength is need under pressure (tensile strength). Things like cabinetry, railings etc.

I just built a Costco shed this past weekend. Our experience is almost verbatim - from the early delivery to the miscuts/warping to the door not hanging right. Just the bolting to the concrete pad took an entire day. The whole thing was beyond frustrating for me, and we ended up paying about $1000 in extra tools/supplies/etc., which I wasn't prepared for. Glad it's built/over, but dang that was frustrating!!

My husband and I just built a similar shed kit this week. We struggled w cheap, ill fitting materials also. We managed to get the shed “dried in” but will definitely not be putting the shingles on ourselves . We don’t know who we’ll get and the cost involved in hiring someone. We paid 2100. for the kit. I did appreciate your ingenious approach to dealing w city codes and assessments! We too love our shed but also feel that we could have built a better quality product sourcing the materials ourselves. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing the experience on the shed kit. Great work considering the pieces were not to spec, warped or items that were missing. Lots of considerations.

I had a wonderful Tuff Shed built in Chicago area for $5500. It was 10x16 and included roof, and painting. They were also wonderful to work with.

We had multiple custom built shed companies in the are give us estimates for the size shed and roofing and painting we wanted and the cheapest was $9k. I was shocked but I know prices have gone way way up the last two years. One company had really lovely looking sheds but was 3months out on contracts and $8k over my budget. 😬😬😬

I think you guys did a great job.... often these kits are more like a guide than a kit! We are not allowed to put up a shed of any size without an engineer certificate and council approval... I get it because we are in a cyclone area but it means if you don't have at least $4000 you're not getting a shed... even the tiny one I squeezed in! I've managed to discretely put up a 1.8m x 80cm tool shed that is good enough for now.

I am so sorry in advance for pointing this out, but I had a bit of a giggle when you said that it was really secure and (around 9:55) and the way the catch is secured is with two outside facing Phillips head screws. The lock may be secure, but anyone with a screwdriver could just open it by removing the catch from the door! Maybe you could replace those with bolts fastened from the inside?

I also had the question “why not just use screws? Wouldn’t they be stronger?” A friend of mine told me recently that nails are commonly used in framing so it allows buildings to shift naturally without breaking/bending the wood. Probably on larger buildings, shifting is more of an issue. Figured I’d share since I also prefer screws!

Nails will bend and screws will snap. Building codes require nails for this reason. In a high wind storm the building will flex and the nails will bend. If it were screws the screws will snap and the building has a potential possibility of falling apart.

Great video. Ut fyi. Framing walls is usually done with ails because it has thr ability to bend and not snap as screws would when exposed to pressure. There's tons of video of thr science of it. Got to use the right ails, tho. Framing nails. And use a nil gun. A cheap Framing nailer can be rented for like 30 dollars a day at home depot lol

So did you go back to Costco to claim a percentage back? We had a shed build onsite 9 years ago, small company was supposed to put it up with 6 workers in 2 days. They sent 2 workers for nearly 2 weeks. Every eve I came home to surprises so took my notebook out and inspected the build, generally 4-8 things to amend the next day (nails, quirky fit, etc.) at some point I asked when they would put the building paper on - should‘ve asked the day before, was too late. But they paid that part back. Held the last 20% until I was absolutely satisfied. The boss spewed but what could he do?? In the end he offered me a peace deal and built a ramp for easy access for our bicycles. Learning:it pays to be firm and pull them up to the standards they promise - often they can deliver if you put your foot down but if you don’t they cut corners. We try to pay tradies on the day they achieve a good finish sand never use the 7days grazing. They delivered so we deliver. If they don’t, we don’t either - easy. I hope you go back to Costco and ask for a few $100 back. Good investment for your next project.

I would be interested in how this shed lasts over time!! I have looked at kit sets before and found them to be wanting and more trouble than worth. As you say there are many plans and DIY videos on line that you can build many things yourself with the modicum of common sense. I have however been in and around the building industry since I was a toddler. I also come from a back ground of why pay someone to do what you can do yourself. I was interested that they used OSB, something that you can not do in Aotearoa, as the climate which I understood to be similar to Portland, where I live would destroy it in no time flat. Maybe the OSB you have is different to ours? In saying that it really does match your house well and looks like it should be there. Well done!!!

Why did I not return the kit after it was 2/3 assembled? A kit that said you can't return it after you begin assembling? There was no option for "replacement pieces". This is such a weird comment, honestly.
