Can't wait to see your AC system solution. Because literally there are not good and affordable AC systems for vanlifers in the market right now. All of them have flaws(very expensive, not energy effecient, needs ducting). Those roof mounted 12V AC systems sucks. They are expensive, loud, limited cooling capabilities (especially cheaper ones), not energy effecient despite what a lot of people believe, and most of them comes only with 1 year warranty. In my opinion mini splits are the way to go, they are much cheaper, quieter, comes with 5~10 years warranty, have dehumidifier and even heater functions. But surprisingly not a lot people are installing in vans. They are more commom in RVs. I don't know why, but I have a feeling that Tim is not going to install those roof mounted AC in this van, maybe is because he installed a recirculating shower and built his DIY battery bank for his first van.

I'm currently looking to get a transit but between the long & extended versions. Long seems like the better option for anything off-road due to the shorter tail end, but I see that you stuck with the extended for both builds - how is the longer back end working out for your travels / parking / offroad adventures? Definitely can't beat having the extra space...

In our travels with our first van we didn’t have any issue with the overhang on logging roads/modest off-road campsites. We also found we could park in pretty much any parking lot without issue, so we don’t mind it at all. We have ordered a 2022 AWD Ecoboost that we hope to put the 2” vancompass lift and bigger tires on to help with clearance 👍🏻

Just curious after reading you also ordered a 2022 Transit from the factory, what kind of wait time were you given? I’m also wondering what you are planning to do with your existing vans? Are you going into the van build or rental business?

  • @TimKatie

The dealership said 4-6 months, but we expect it’ll be 6-8 months. We’ll be happy if it’s here by next May. The first build already sold and is in the US. We hope to finish this second van by April and travel for a few weeks and then potentially list it for sale. No official business but we enjoy the conversion process and if it works out we’d love to continue doing 1-2/yr. Did you order a 2022 as well?

Hi there Tim & Katie. Sorry if I missed it somewhere but what core diffences are you going to build into this unit over your original van? Also I notice in your recirculating shower build you list replacing the UV unit ever 1-2 years @ $90. I've just brought two UV units and 8 replacement tubes at $6 each.....

Hi Graham, No problem - we are increasing the battery size to 930 ah 12V, 12V heated floors, 12V undermount AC unit, and possibly putting the sink Grey water tank outside with a solenoid valve drain 👍🏻 Great find on the UV light and replacement bulbs - what brand are those?

@@TimKatie killer! I'm using 720Ah x 24v on Merc 814 7.5 t chassis. A) bc I can. B) bc by lowering C rates both in charging and current draw it massively extends the life of the system. Same with limiting the charge - I'm assuming that you are using LiFePo 4? I'm going to set my charge parameters to 83% and only do a 100% charge once a month to ensure that the BMS top balances the cells. BTW. Bc reliability is my No1 priority I've had my batteries built with multi cylinder cells -39 per battery. As for my A/C I've brought a rather large Heat pump. This way I get cooling, dehumidifier and heat options plus a high volume of moving air. Like you I'm sitting my tanks/batteries as low was I can - but that brings the issue of freezing so I've brought thermostatic heat mats and I'll also insulate well.

@@TimKatie just don't hold your breath. I'm locked down in the UK so the build has been scaled down. BTW. If it appeals to you, I'm planning on using a solar regulator to control my alternator output. (I have 1525w + 400w of solar so I'm not expecting to rely too much on the alt but I am running a completely separate charge system for my Lithium's)

Personally we like the Transits for the increased interior height (6’7” ceiling height), low maintenance (no DEF!) gasoline engine, and wider rear bed area, but there are definitely pros and cons to each and I think everyone needs to research and decide for themselves 😊 We actually just ordered a 2022 AWD Transit factory build for our potential next build 👍🏻

@@TimKatie Thank you for the info. I am leaning towards Ford AWD but again with all the info available it gets so difficult to pick one. • @TimKatie

@@karankp8444 Ya exactly. It’s a tough market. It appears the only way is to order a factory build like we just put in for a 2022 AWD. You seem like nice people but your videos would get 10 times more views if you use an external mic or generally thought about your sound quality. A simple plug-and-go external mic costs $5. And requires no extra editing. Or at least film on something that was designed for vlogging.
