Watch our recent project here:
• Tiny House Renovation ...
It is nearly impossible to buy affordable housing in the U.K. Therefore, we bought an abandoned house in central Portugal. Here we show you how we found the property, how much it cost, and other costs to take into account when purchasing properties in Portugal. If you want to buy a property in central Portugal, have a look at this video!

    Hello and welcome to Portugal. Just a little correction. The map of Portugal Districts is wrong in the separation between Lisboa and Setúbal Districts! The Tejo river separates them. It's southern bank is Península de Setúbal, with the city of Setúbal in the northern bank of the river Sado (Setúbal District), the northern bank of the river Tejo is Lisboa! Check Google Earth ;) you will understand!

    England second hand cars are cheaper, but what about insurance? How much would it cost you fully comp policy? In Portugal dont forget that insurance lets you drive in most of european countries while UK you have to pay extra, also every car policy in Portugal comes with free recovery. What about UK? You have to get AA or any other recovery service, right? How much would that be on the top?Check these channels, OK Portugal, The Indie projects, stay classy vlog, Expats Portugal,

    I just loved your video. I was watching the expressions on your faces and it was like reading your minds. We are much older and did a similar thing. My wife is Portuguese born and raised and immigrated to Canada in the 80's. I am old-stock Canadian from Nova Scotia having relocated to Ontario in the 80's. We met in Ontario after our horrible divorces practically wiped us out. We desperately wanted out of the rat-race for a long time, so we sold our house and our possessions arriving in Portugal with 4 suitcases, a dog and a cat. We have been at it for going on three years now and just love it here. I am still having trouble with learning to speaking the language, despite understanding most of it. We are also in Centro region. We live close to the Mira area. Believe me the hard work will pay off. Most of the food we consume, we produce, and that cant be beat eh? When the "pandemic" arrived, we hardly even noticed. Its nice to be self-sufficient.

    Wellcome neighbours, I live in an old house in the Lousã municipality. My advise: look for advise from others who renovated old houses arround here. There are a lot of them. The climate, and the way the house can cope with it, are the bad surprises foreigners usually face in thiis area. The humidity will impregnate the walls 7 to 8 months a year. You need to invest in good insulation and a good heating system. The more you spare in this, the more you'll spend in the future and the more you'll suffer from unconfortable winters. You may need deshumidifiers for the mold. The good news is: wood is cheap, from the excess of eucalyptus and acacias. This wood is not the best, but the heat from the burning is ok. You will need some 12 cubic meters a year, depending on the volume of the house . ~400€ a year, if you want confort. Keep in mind that the electrical companys cap the power in old houses (16 A. generally) unless they look like new... I'm portuguese. We don't like to sound over optimistc, unless when trying to sell something. Good luck.

    That's true the price is increasing a lot but is not speculation. We are having a huge demand and not a lot of offers in farms and even in houses/apartments, is one incredible grow in last 5 years, a lot of Brazilians and foreign start to look to Portugal to a great alternative to retire and not only to retire... Once again Portugal is the best country for digital nomads and i bet you the prices going to grow even this year with pandemic, because after the pandemic lot new workers going to start to work 100% home.

    @@arturjcrebelo3275 100% agree with you. A curious thing we noticed is that agencies we are familiar with, won't just put any price, they want to sell so they want to be as realistic as possible. So speculation is not really happening, it's demand. Many are bought by foreigners but also Portuguese. I think the pandemic has definitely changed the mindset of people and many will move to the countryside which is wonderful. I think in next year, Portugal may boom. Well done guys! We are planning to do the same in Braga. We have the property, very similar to yours, and hopefully we will start the renovation next year, all pending on Covid travelling restrictions - we are Portuguese living and working in London. We have similar ideas for the house so would be quite interested to see what will be your strategies for insulation in an eco sustainable perspective, etc. Good luck!

    Hey Ana! That's awesome! We haven't been there, would love to know the area more and visit :D Hopefully, things quiet down by that time, it should be 🙏 To be honest, it hasn't been easy with lockdown to get tools/materials so might as well wait a bit and actually to things in an easier manner. We haven't discussed insulation yet but it's a hot topic when renovating, so important as it gets so cold in the winter. We will definitely touch on that when we get there! Do keep us updated with your project! x

    I am a Franco - Australian living in Australia. I know Portugal since 1970, in 2014 I bought a small house in Alentejo a town name Torrao. After a few pots of paints and a new bathroom renovated by a nice guy from the next street I have a lovely nest to go for the culture and ancient history of this beautiful country. I think you have done well, I hope you can do a lot by yourself as portugueses builders are sometimes not very constant with the client. If they have work somewhere else you can wait for them for days or weeks, I have a long experience for this matter. Portugueses ate very friendly just do not pay in advance for buildings matters and ask a quote signed by you and them so you can be advise by your lawyer if a problem occur. Good luck, adeus.

    Without knowing how big the property is or having a guided tour, my guess would have been €40,000 so I think you got a good deal. Time will tell. You are courageous in undergoing the huge sacrifice implicit in living in a portacabin while you start renovating. I would have preferred buying a house in good condition, so much easier, though so often characterless. Every week I am discovering another KZread channel of foreigners moving to live in Portugal. There's a ton if you out there, struggling to keep up!

    I am in the early stages of planning a similar leap into Portugal from England and I too have focused in on Coimbra as the likely candidate' although the prices further inland are very attractive.

  • @TheIndigoEscape

    @TheIndigoEscape

    2 жыл бұрын

    Inland is great too but it depends on access and what your priorities are. We really like going on day trips/weekend breaks and we found that Coimbra is nearer all the places we are very interested in visiting (Lisbon/Porto 2.5hrs, Aveiro 1.5hrs) We also find more inland to be very hot and dry. Coimbra is greener (it does rain a bit more) but it is still much sunnier than England. Also, there is so much water here compared to inland and the Algarve. May be worth visiting both places before buying! You do get some amazing properties inland (Castelo Branco, etc) that would probably cost you way more in Coimbra.

    As a Portuguese native take this as friendly warning, builders can be weasels! Especially if you're foreigners. So be extra careful with that. Great choice of location btw, I've visited Coimbra only once and cant wait to get back and spend a couple of weeks exploring. Its definitely one of the top districts in Portugal. Also, check out Lousã! Quite near to your location as the foresty parts are to die for.

    After see the 3 videos i do think if you want to do everything that you describe in the videos, prepare yourselves for more than 75.000€. Be careful and have some portuguese contact the builders, a Portuguese friend or family that speak very good Portuguese, they can rise the price because you are foreign, they think you have lot of money. They even can give you a small price, but going to push for extra costs along way the work. Portuguese people is very friendly, but when money matters, sorry not so friendly...
