We Are So Small In the Vast Infinity of Space | Incomplete Guide to Starsector (0.96a) Ep 1

Ойындар

Today, we begin our journey in Starsector with a tiny fleet of only two ships--hardly worthy of the word "fleet." There is some trouble in the Galatia system that has closed off the system from the rest of the sector. It's up to us to repair the jump gates as we work our way through the tutorial!

    Starsector is one of those indie games that has been driven almost entirely by word of mouth and a passionate community. The dev is awesome, and puts out a ton of quality work with updates. I think I bought my license like, 10 or 11 years ago when there were only 2 or 3 systems you could travel to. Now you're able to create your own faction and colonize planets, with something approaching a storyline, and so many new ships. It's crazy. Plus, the community is pretty amazing, with a *ton* of mod support out there with new factions/ships or gameplay systems if you end up wanting to bridge out from what's available officially.

    Oh wow, you're one of the OG! I first got into Starsector at the tail end of 0.91. I love the level of thought and care that Alex puts into the game's development! Haven't tinkered much with mods because there's already so much to do in the game, and by the time I hit the end of the game, there's usually another playthrough with a different fleet build that I want to try!

    Its good to pick up modspecs when you find them if you can afford it, once you have one learned then it wont appear later in market loot tables or salvaging research stations etc, even if you don't plan to use it it means the ones you do want to use are more likely to show up moving forward.

    Speaking as a proud junker captain D-Mods are not the worst thing in the world, some D-mods are generally easy to ignore having no profound impact in combat or on logistics, but only a few. But every D-mod on a ship reduces its CR recovery post combat and one of the late Logistics tree perks actually applies further bonuses for each D-mod. Some ships as well come with a built in mod called Rugged Construction which halves the effects of all D-mods, makes the ships hard to fully destroy so they can frequently be recovered after being blown up in combat.

  • @Kurazarrh

    @Kurazarrh

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I kind of wish there was a way of telling the game "don't fix this d-mod." Like, if I have glitched sensor array or faulty automated systems, I'm not gonna care (usually), or compromised storage on a vessel with an already small amount of storage. Those are worth their weight in recovery supplies!

  • @ham8426

    @ham8426

    Жыл бұрын

    Thnakfully the game itself does have Mods for it, and I think I saw a relatively new one that lets you pay to add specific D-mods at ports. But for a vanilla experience farming D-mods is a chore and keeping only specific ones is basically impossible. I will say the one D-Mod you never want on a ship is Ill-advised modifications, its a unique D-mod that mostly is found on Luddic Path variant ships and it basically means your ship is functionally at 0%CR all the time as weapons or engines randomly cut out. The worst part is even if you get blueprints and have your colonies build your own LP variants they still come with the D-mod.

  • @Kurazarrh

    @Kurazarrh

    @@ham8426 Yeah I remember when the LP Brawler was considered the best version due to the built-in SO, but not anymore! Shame, too, some of their designs are neat. I don't think the LP Prometheus Mk II has IAM, though, but not 100% positive.

  • @ham8426

    @ham8426

    Жыл бұрын

    I think the LP might still be the best variant to the brawler specifically but if you want hard hitting frigates you can definitely do better. =Vigilance have medium missile slots so can sport pilums for long range bombardment. =Vanguards lack any shields and are good tanky armor boys with impressive speed being among the fastest not counting some of the high tech frigates. =Omens are surprisingly versatile and can usually solo most other frigates and even keep destoyers and cruisers occupied, which you wouldn't think at first glance given their apparent role as a PD platform. =Hyperion is probably one of the strongest frigates but is tricky as hell to pilot and the AI does not pilot it very well, for as expensive as they are to maintain if you aren't piloting it you may as well not bother. The issue with Brawlers is their forward facing design and a rather mediocre move speed and maneuverability as well as relatively poor flux stats given it has 2 forward facing medium hard points. Which is a universal problem for all variants of the Brawler, having SO built in makes the LP stand out for being able to make maximum use of those two medium slots. I tried making the TT brawlers functional, but that was before the update and there's new energy weapons now so it may be worth a second look, idk, they were pretty bad before but maybe just as Graviton escorts they have some use now given the buff to Graviton beams.

Watching this series and playing on my own has helped me start to feel like I'm getting a real grasp on the game. So thanks for that. I still have a lot to learn about combat and building ships lol. @@hansknickerbocker9202 In the early game, the Hammerhead is great to learn on. It's reasonably fast, reasonably armored, shields over most of its hull, and your weapons all point forward, so you don't have to try to manage your weapon facing separately from your shields. Or you could go with the Apogee start--it's a slower ship but has great shields and large weapon mounts (though you won't find any in Ancyra). Later on, if you're looking for a good, easy to pilot capital ship, look at the Paragon. Very straightforward, especially if you do a beam build.

Funny you mention the paragon as on my current game I find an Astral, a Paragon and an Aurora in one of the first systems I randomly decided to explore. It was remarkably dangerous (for me, at least) I think there was a Remnant Nexus, two Sub-Ordos and an Ordo or whatever the bigger one is called. All guarding two Terran worlds and an Azure world.
