    Actually, in the so-called "progressive" mosques they do pray like that. Amina Wadud led such a prayer and so did IMI in the UK & wherever you find these inclusive initiatives. They are tiny movements but have gained visibility so it is technically valid representation. BUT If they really wanted to accurately portray an outlier prayer, they would have had all others pray normally & 1 girl pray like this and have the others find it weird/comment on it which I feel would have been more accurate. But I guess the Muslim director made her choice and we can say it does seem like a bit of a fail. Also before anyone @s me with "but those people aren't Muslim", I'm not interested in your opinion, this does exist and therefore can be represented. Right or wrong, fringe movements have been happening since the Rashidun Caliphates with the Kawarijites to the Mu'tazilites & Murjiah in the Islamic Golden Age, right down to the Perennials in the 20th Century. No one would bat an eye if one of the girls were Shia and only prayed 3 times with the Turbah stone even though many muslims shout "but Shia's do shirk". I'm sorry but I believe the realities that exist have every right to be represented :)

    @@dillychan it's only valid, as you said, if the minority prayed like that and the other girls commented on it being very weird and possibly not an accepted prayer. This I don't know from the teaser alone

  • @dillychan

    @dillychan

    @@zelozelo7563 I agree with you hence I said it was a fail on the director's part. But I think we may disagree on some semantics; I view something as "valid" if it exists in the real world. For example, there is a range of female muslim artists; from religious like Poetic Pilgrimage, to political like Shadia Mansour, to mainstream like Yuna, to unconventional like Tingtong Ketz and depicting any of these is valid representation but that doesn't mean it's an entirely "accurate" representation. This is why I stressed the more context that is added, the more accurate the scenario. So yes, the prayer should have been depicted as the outlier prayer it is in order to be accurate but that doesn't discount it's validity in my opinion.

    Tired of seeing this representation of muslim women portrayed by non Muslim actors. If you're going to do a show like at least cast real Muslim women. Why does it always have to be about Muslim women in hijab doing things going against our faith. I'm sick of big media cooperations thinking they're representing us. If this representation then we don't want it.

    Another thing…you do know the actors DON’T write and direct the script and story right? Like whether or not a Muslim character is played by a Muslim actor is irrelevant. Its the director and writers behind the show. Also this is a fictional TV show, not a documentary. That being said, I know quite a few sisters who can relate to the characters in the show. So maybe you shouldn’t speak for all Muslims when we aren’t some one monolith.

  • @dillychan

    Yes but in this instance, they are NOT trying to inform on Islam or represent an ideal Islamic role model, rather they are portraying Muslims in a certain context. If they were representing Rashidun Medina, I would agree that it is a fail but they are trying to depict diverse, young Muslimahs in the present-day UK band scene. Myself and most Muslimahs I know have agreed that this is fair diversified representation (because these realities do exist & are valid) of such a niche setting and remember these girls are depicted as unconventional within their community as portrayed in the show too. The director (and head writer I believe) are both Muslims, and, in fact I know the Niqabi that they reached out to in order to make sure that they were representing that minority respectfully and as far as I know, she is more than happy with Momtaz. Edit Add: Also please don't confuse this as me advocating for non-hijab, musical string instruments & smoking tobacco within Islam; I am fully aware that the Ijmaa ruling is that they are all considered haram. However, the reality is huge visible groups of Muslims exist who do all these and they have every right to be represented. This show is clear that it's purpose is not as a documentary nor a portrayal of Islamic ideals :)

    Cool but, drummer and singer are too dramatic for no reason. Makes the story feel contrived. Also, if musical expression is so important to you, why believe in something that says playing an instrument is forbidden?

    Not a Muslim myself, but I know through friends and what they've told me of their experiences that it's unlikely you'll find 10 muslims that simultaneously agree on something (e.g. some pray 5 times a day as the Quran dictates, some think its overkill and pray when they have time, or maybe not at all, so the same can be said about musical expression).

    🤣🤣 what shaitan wrote this💀. It's cool tho anyone with a bit of sense can see straight through the agendas pushed here like making the "conservative" family in the beginning seem like bad people who shun others when in fact the prophet s.a.w taught us to smile as it is a charity and to speak with wisdom. This is clearly trying to confuse our sisters but at this point Allah s.w.t guides whom he wills and may Allah s.w.t protect our families and honour
