'We Are Lady Parts' Cast & Creator Talk Season 1 & Forming A Punk Band

Музыка

'We Are Lady Parts' is the brilliant new TV comedy following an all-female Muslim punk band, complete with some incredible original songs on the soundtrack like 'Bashir With the Good Beard', 'Ain’t No One Gonna Honour Kill My Sister But Me' and 'Voldemort Under My Headscarf', as well as some surprising cover versions. We chat through the making of Season 1 with the show's creator Nida Manzoor as well as the cast - Anjana Vasan who plays guitarist Amina, Sarah Kameela Impey as the lead singer Saira, Juliette Motamed as the drummer Ayesha, Faith Omole as Bisma the bass player and Lucie Shorthouse as Momtaz, the group's manager. Find out how they bonded as a band, their favourite musical moments, the show's accidental My Chemical Romance reference and what they would love to see happen in Season 2.
'We Are Lady Parts' is available on All 4 and Channel 4 in the UK and is streaming on Peacock in the US from June 03.

I'm probably the polar opposite to the show's target demographic, but I remember punk the first time around and I think the show really captures the spirit of the scene: the exuberance and energy, the mix of serious and silly. There's some big themes here too - stuff about growing up between two cultures, finding your place in the world and finding your voice. Love the show!

I love the culture cross over with the punk music. Anyone should be punk if your mexican, italian, puerto rican, african it doesn't matter, voice it out anyway you can and wherever you come from.

I binged this show in an afternoon, I loved this show so much!! The characters were both larger-than-life and wonderfully real, and the show was poignant and hilariously funny. You can really tell how much everyone loved making the show and how much effort went in to everything. I really related to Amina and her growth arc. Looking forward to season 2!!!

This is one of the BEST TV programs to come along in a LONG time. It has broken so many Islamic stereotypes and beliefs non-muslims have, including mine. I always saw the Niqab as a way to unfairly blame women for men's lustful thoughts. Momtaz says it gives her more confidence and she feels closer to God. There is actually a real mystique to it as well. I LOVE Momtaz.....only now seeing Ms. Shorthouse without it is like seeing KISS without makeup for the first time in 1983. Ms. Manzoor is a GENIUS. I loved and cared for each character within five minutes of meeting them, and my favorite character is definitely Ayesha. I front three Tribute bands now and know what its like to look back at the drummer, both of us with big smiles on our faces. There HAS to be more seasons! It was beautiful watching Saira help Amina come out of her shell, recognizing her sheer talent when Amina couldn't see it herself.

As a man from America, I liked the show. However, I felt the plot went a little too fast. the characters went from relationships to out of relationships and back into them, rigidly orthodox to principally liberal, explored homosexuality, etc. all within 6 episodes. Kinda not a lot of character development either. That said, I like the show because all of the parts are played by women: rebel, rigid, free-spirited, confused, hardworking, lonely and alienated, obstructionist and opportunistic. Men barely play a role in the show. I think this is good because it shows that women can have all of these attributes without the contribution of men.

I don’t think she was exploring homosexuality I think she was just being homosexual (or bisexual) and - at least with her friends - it was no big deal and that was kind of the point. They didn’t make Ayesha being gay in to a huge deal, it was just what it was. I kinda thought that was cool

@@lucillebalinska5868 Thank you so much for saying this!! Speaking from personal experience..not everyone is straight, and we don’t have to have a “coming out story” or have our entire identity framed around our orientation to exist in media. Especially considering the context of the show, being that it mainly focused on the interactions between this group of friends, it‘s entirely realistic that they would’ve already known Ayesha liked women prior to what we see over the course of s1
