I’m at 590whp in my f82 fbo full e85 and i have the insane performance crank hub. Cars runs perfectly. When I had my oem hub taken out, my friction disk was split in half. I was a pull or two away from spinning my hub. There are shops that have had cars spin the hub while going 2 mph going on the lift. It is INSANELY random. Spend the $ for the piece of mind because ur car is bulletproof until around 700hp if u just get the hub done

Nice informative video guys... thanks. I have a stock F80 within warranty, and last month raised this crank hub matter with BMW Oz. They didn’t know anything straight up, but did chase it up for me internally. Here’s what they said... paraphrased. The design is a mechanical fuse. Due to the lengthy crank, and the chain drive being located on the end opposite to the transmission, there is a tendency for the crank to oscillate/vibrate as it twists. They want to shield the chain drive (and VANOS) from this vibration by allowing the crank hub to spin. However as the engine is of the interference kind, they have a sensor which detects the spin, and then limps it, throwing an error code almost immediately. They also stated that horsepower is a factor here, since whilst the chain drive mechanism is not load bearing in its operation, a higher tune could cause even greater crank oscillation. I can’t speak to whether DCT operation has any relevance, as that was not part of the conversation I had with them. The thing that they kept coming back to was the location of the chain drive, and how this is critical to why the crank hub must be allowed to spin in the S55. They pointed to how in the S58 engine, the chain drive was relocated to the transmission side, and hence they made the crank hub a single solid piece which cannot spin. I think that as they were speaking to me, they were up selling the G series! Anyhow, hope I’ve added something useful to this topic.

Mate! I'm in Oz and interested on your outcome. I run a 2018 competition which is just short of 450 hp and allows me to loose traction in 3rd gear. I'm surprised that BMW refer to any increase in tune will have an impact ? while they have already tuned the standard m3 to competition to cs without changing the crank hub ? or have they ? Keep in touch - I don't track my car but I enjoy the drive ;)

I'd expect that BMW, like any big corporate, is just being conservative with what they tell customers. Yep; true that they've upped the power through to CS spec without taking any steps to spline lock the crank hub. My best guess would be that after the very early spun hubs (

I’m on the edge about this, bmw says it’s not common. And people say it’s a must, I have a 15 f80 dct tuned with bm3 stage 2 and I drive the hell out of it. Always spirited driving. I just don’t use kickdown because I like to shift on my own. My car is still under warranty and the dealership I bought my car from are cool enough to fix any problems with my car even though I’m tuned and have after market parts. I told them about the crank hub and if we should get it replaced with an aftermarket one. And they told me that if I buy it they will install it for free, but if it fails then that’s on me. That’s the situation I’m in LOL.

In the most ideal way, the two sprockets should be built in the hub then keyed/spline to the crank, but this is engineering and a good engineering is both robust AND cost effective. The Bimmer Engineers probably do this for the manufacturing cost and I’m pretty sure they did the math based on potential failure modes, but perhaps they should reevaluate the potential failure modes and come up with solution. Static friction to transfer torque is actually pretty robust if it is spec correctly. Your manual clutch relies on this principle, granted when the clutch fail, the engine doesn’t blow out. I think the issue was the bolt was backing out and losing the compressive tension needed to maintain that friction.

Im a bmw tech. And this crank hub issue is not a real issue. It’s something forums and word of mouth made it seem like something it’s not. Spinning the crank hub only happens in manuals cars when over revving when shifting into 5th gear. Bmw dealers are oblivious to this issue people claim to “be common” literally only saw one m3 come to the dealer for this happening. So yes it can happen on these cars but on manuals due to driver error but it’s not some weak point on the car like people say it is

This problem is definitely overblown, but for good reason, it’s an engine killer potentially. Funny thing is that the load placed on the crankhub is from powering the valve train and oil pump. This load does not change in a meaningful way due to increased horsepower. The load increases if you raise the RPM limit, or somehow increase the resistance from the valve train. But this issue seems to be more prevalent with tuned cars. My only explanation for this is driving behaviors from people with tuned cars. And this BMW tech clearly does not know what he is talking about..,

Here is another question, under a SCH situation, what is the opportunity to blow up the whole engine? Seems most of the case just need to replace with an enforced CH and do a re timing? If that’s the case, people could still do the CH at that moment, without replacing the whole engine. Feels it’s fair to not worry too much

The pinned hub is good but wouldn't drilling the crank case for the little pins make it weaker? Also the pinned hub by itself isn't 100% solution. The bolt can still back out cause the hub to spin. Would need the bolt capture and the hub for it to be a so called 100% solution. This has happened to a guy with MaxPsi hub with the double pins.

I stick out my head and say that it has NOTHING with horsepower to do. How would horsepower make it harder for the cam drive system and oil pump to rotate? Horsepower doesn't go throught the crank into the bolt itself and everything in the cam drive and oil pump system is exactly the same so nothing creates more resistance. I say it has only with transmission chocks to do. Extremely fast rev changes. I also say that it is much worse for the hub to stand on the dragstrip with slicks and dump the clutch then driving on the street with stock clutch and 700 horsepower. Another intresting thing is that BMW motorsport never have had any issue with the hub on their GT4 cars.

If that car is pushing 615 WHP I’m suprised the crankhub hasn’t already spun. That’s too much for a stock crankhub. It should cost a little under 2,000 to bulletproof the crankhub, that’s with installation and the actual crankhub. If the crankhub spins you’ll immediately know because you can’t drive the car anymore.

However my worry is 1. finding a shop which is able to do the job properly in my country; 2. getting the part shipped to my location. I wonder if SSR Performance ship parts to China. If they do, problem no.2 solved. (^▽^)
