How does a 130,000 mile M4 engine look inside? Evolve S55 Billet Crank Hub Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Matt bought his F82 M4 with 125,000 miles on, and has done 5000 trouble free miles (other than 2 oil top ups...)
We were curious to see what the inside of the engine was looking like after that many miles, and having only been serviced to BMWs service intervals. Combine that with the small niggle of crank hub slip (although unlikely to ever happen with the plans for the car and how I drive) it seemed a good opportunity to upgrade the Crank Hub to the Evolve 4 pin billet hub.
We show the entire process of the Crank Hub upgrade, along with a detailed explanation of the issue, why it happens and how we have fixed it.

Great video! Glad to see another S55 project, since I have an M2C. It never ceases to amaze me how car manufacturers can somehow convince themselves that designs, such as the crankhub on the S55, are adequate, when they could be significantly improved with only minimal incremental cost, such as using a keyed hub rather than the friction washer. Looking forward to seeing the video about changing the rod bearings.

This is definitely a big part of it, and why we see some people do for example just the crank bolt guard and then have issues, likely cause of incorrect reinstallation. However if they had left it be it might’ve been just fine. Obviously any sort of upgraded turbos or maxing out stock turbos with E85 I think it’s a great idea. However highly beaten on cars like the Apex Ring F8x cars never get the fix and they’ve had zero issues. However they’re also driven properly for the most part. Theres a lot of different variables with the hub. Approaching 100K on my S55 with zero issues, daily driven like it’s stolen ;) maybe my car was just properly torqued from factory. Also am within factory power on just a CS map however with definitely plays a role. More power simply means the hub is more at risk to slip, no matter which way you spin it in.

I have a hybrid turbo f82, with 80k on it running about 600 whp. No hub fix, absolutely fine so far. The problem is overstated. I think big power, SMG box and aggressive down shifts are probably the combo that makes it slip. I also agree some of these fixes (not this one) look a bit dodge, I recon the issue could well be more common for people who have messed about with there crank hub than not.

So far the only thing does seem to be the intake manifold if wanting to go hybrid and push higher PSI, then the transmission. If sticking to standard turbo power (which is still capable of a lot!) then it seems a very reliable well designed engine so far.

We have one in the workshop with one currently that luckily didn't spin it enough to cause engine damage. Our F80 M3 had it happen at 1000 miles on the dyno which required a replacement engine, and we've heard of many more.

back in the day not all engines were built so that if your timing belt skips(kinda same as spun hub) then piston meets valves. if that happends, sh!t gets expensive real fast @@EvolveAutomotive

Truthfully we are unsure if the age/mileage of the car meaningfully affects the likelihood of the hub spinning. There’s many variables and whilst we’ve considered a way to test them we aren’t sure if the data obtained would be useful as advice.

The idea of drilling into the crank with a hand drill and a guide makes me feel uneasy, there's no way that is perfectly centered down to 0.0001". I'd love to see how much the balance is off on the crank after this mod. This falls under "ghetto fix" for me imo.
