We absolutely loved this city in Johor 🇲🇾 (Locals asked us if we were lost) | Malaysia Vlog 2023
We go eating along the roadside in Malaysia at a city many rarely go to...
In fact a local said, 'we seldom see European people, are you lost?'- he thought we might have been lost! He wasn't the only one that couldn't quite work out why we were here.
We're in Johor, visiting a little road city called Yong Peng.

I was a resident of Yong Peng in 1989-1994, didn't know famous for its cendol, I love the way you explore the small towns and trying to communicate in Bahasa Melayu

Good job Pat, interacting with multi language in our small town. If they don't understand you, just switch from English to Mandarin or Bahasa Melayu, worse case, sign language! Simple! Mostly we can understand, but we use English to foreign visitor specially `western' for better understanding and to avoid misunderstanding.

Wow I’m impressed with you speaking in malay ❤. Seriously you have a talent in learning malay . I followed your channel since before covid . Glad to see you back in Malaysia
Your bahasa has improved. keep it up! :D
This location is certainly not on the hot tourist trail, but it's the type of sleepy town that has lots to offer if you do your homework in advance. Anyways, it's great to see that both of you are the adventurous type that likes to try places off the beaten path!

You’re right Nick, always nice to visit these places though, if Malaysians are friendly, the Malaysians in these places are 2x as friendly! 👍🏻
Yong Peng is mainly a stop to rest or take a washroom break for those long haul drivers travelling from the north going southwards in the peninsula. It is a popular stop for those driving from/to Singapore & has a number of excellent Chinese (especially Hakka) food to offer.
I was born in kluang, so I hv been to batu pahat, Yong peng, muar, jb.
Don't forget to visit Kluang district town only 45 minutes from where you are...famous coffee and toast bread..Kluang mostly known by its coffee industry & agro tourism..

Very well known among the local travelers. And kudos for speaking in Malay. Really appreciate the effort and your pronounce isn't too shabby as well. Really enjoying watching your videos. Yong Peng and Sitiawan have similar Fuzhou heritage with large population immigration from that province in China. The flatbread is called "kom piang". Another Fuzhou delicacy is their red wine soup and stringy vermicelli called "mee sua". I'm surprised you didn't try it when visiting Sitiawan years ago....

That kuih bulat is named kuih pokis. It is really from Johor. Initially the one with original flavour is yellow in color and have pineapple jam. The reason they made this because Johor had a lot of pineapple plantation previously and overdue production of pineapple jam. Then it is evolved to kaya, corn, chocolate, strawberry and now green with pandan flavour. At Indonesia, it is spelled as kuih pukis.
