Hey Myke, this is Ja'Carra and I wanted to say thank you very much for answering my question. It was really cool to finally hear someone's opinion and experience dealing with that from a genre of music and just in general. Don't take this as a sympathy ticket, but it kind of sucks not really having that kind of insight from my peers around me because it always get slammed with these stupid ass labels such as "that white folk music" or "Satan worshipping music". But racism nor any kind of social boundary won't stop me from enjoying a genre or band, I just wanted proper insight from somebody just in case if I acted belligerent and it wasn't necessary. Thanks for taking the time out to answer my question man, and whoever has disagreements about you being a o.g., tell them to come see me bruh bruh lol.

In my experience nazis tended to get thrashed at shows. At least that was the way it was 5 years ago in the local punk scene; it kinda died after 08. SHARPS and Reds never put up with that bullshit; at one show a band stopped playing to physically remove a guy from the house show.

John Doe Nice. Yeah, that happens at punk shows, but not metal shows. The Nazis are typically just ignored. Sometimes even tolerated. It's pretty annoying.

Man, if you had a radio show playing the music in your collection and talking like you do in these videos, I'd listen daily.

Funny how the racists dont realize that the music they love, was spawned by music developed by black artists. A coworker was playing some obscure punk/metal type music and I swore tge guitar solo in one song, sounded amazingly reminiscent of a Chuck Barry scale.

In my experience at metal shows I've never seen any racism, and normally people are amazingly accommodating, like they acknowledge not many people like death metal, so when there's a room full of people supporting a band they love there's a respect and welcoming. Normally the only issue is you can get some metal elitists who will give you grief for wearing the 'wrong' shirt (I wore a Regina Spektor T to Cannibal Corpse), but I got more respect than trouble. I encountered some racism in hardcore though (towards middle eastern guys) and rap scenes though (I'm from England). That said, I don't go to black metal gigs, where racism does seem most prevailant.

What annoys me the most about being one of 2-3 black people at a metal show is when everyone expects me to know or befriend the other black people there for no reason other than we're both black

Thank you for the response, Myke! I would certainly agree with certain aspects you said on MBTI, and completely agree with your opinion on the matter. I'm interested in MBTI in theory, in describing personality at it rudimentary essence in an effort to understand the minds of others. In short, I'm more interested in the characterization and categorization of qualities versus a means to "box", but unfortunately the MBTI system is flawed and can be used as that. Furthermore, it's validity is suspect, yet I still find some credence in what function it claims to perform. If you're still remotely interested in or accepting of the subject, take a look into ENFP. I'd personally say it's a closer fit.

I still listen to bands like Burzum, Graveland and Nokturnal Mortum from time to time but I would NEVER support those bands in any way (buy merch, albums or attend shows).

as a black guy who is into metal (and one that went to an hbcu where there were very few of us who were into it) I appreciate your perspective on the scene. I recently had to debate a friend of mine as to why as much as I love Pantera's "vulgar display of power" I haven't listened to it since finding out about Phil Anselmo's antics and views.

I'm light skinned, not too dark anyways.I love Indie rock, and I go to Brooklyn, New York to see a lot of indie rock bands play in the Williamsburg Area. I went to a show on Halloween night and was probably the only guy of latin descent there. A lot of white people and like two black guys. I wish there was more diversity in the indie rock scene and rock scene.

IMO you and Anthony Fantano are the best music reviewers on youtube. Any plans to collab with him Siskel & Ebert style?

Never really thought about the whole being more punk because of being black and into punk and rebelling against standards. It's a very interesting view point and it definitely is true no one would really be surprised at someone white or even Hispanic being into punk, but when it comes to black people there seems to be this thought and idea of wow, that's so different and out of the norm

I went to my first Metal show last year in Miami. The line-up consisted of Black Metal bands from the state of Florida. I was one of 2 black people there (the other was a woman who came with her White boyfriend). Nobody messed with us or treated us differently. When a guy wanted to walk between me and another guy, he simply patted me on the back and I gave him space to move.

Hey Myke like what you said about being a black punk. I'm also in a similar situation as a Hispanic. It's true people do you treat you a little different for hanging out with the white kids that have similar interests to you and not even the white kids you hang out with totally get you is the worst part. I can't escape the differences no matter where I go. Even when I go to Mexico I am looked as an outsider for being American. I wish it didn't have to be so divided but what am I going to do.

I feel the same way about that as I do about the racism in black metal. I think a lot of it is confused people acting this way out of tradition or what they see as protection of culture and heritage. For the record...I don't really think DIJ is actually racist. I think it's a shock value thing.

what I wanna know is have you listened to HORSE the band yet?! ive asked before lol I just know its right up your ally and wanna hear your opinion. My favorite band hands down. You should also check out Downstaaiirs. The guys from Heavy Heavy Low Lows new band, very very good.

Myke I got a question. Obviously you've got a taste for "dark" music, as do I. Would you say it's wise for someone who is quite isolated and sees themselves as separated from the environment in which they're in to listen to so much dark music? I mean at times it feels like what's supposed to be an escape into art is my reality and even though I enjoy it, the moods in those albums tend to stick with me. Do you have any experience with something similar or know of anyone that might? I wasn't really sure where to send you this man sorry.

actually you'd probably find mtbi to be a lot more accurate than you think, I mean it was designed by some of the greatest psychologists in history. it's really just a matter of preferences, how much u prefer a letter over it's opposite. I know someone who's my type and it trips me out how similar we are on random things sometimes

My first metal concert was Carcass, who's music i enjoy alot. I'm not really into extreme metal, but I do indeed like Carcass, untill i heard the concert. They were playing at Roskilde Festival at 14:00, but it was an absolute disaster. They were so arogant and they were just plain bad. I haven't really felt like listening to any extreme metal since then and have been taking a break from them. Any idea's to what to extreme metal I could listen to? I really wonna get started again.

Strapping Young Lad. The album City to be more exact. Also check out the singer from that band- Devin Townsend. That guy is crazy. He released like 15 albums ranging from embiental music to extreme metal to noise.

Yup. Fully aware. But neither of those bands sound even remotely similar at all.

As a white Norwegian, i do admit that i personally find it difficult for me to listen certain of Black Metal bands, because i feel like i am acknowledging their ideologies by enjoying their music. What bothers me about that is that i might have enjoyed a band before i realized they were NSBM or whatever. Like i think (some of) Burzum music is pretty good. However, I know this one guy who have another take on it, he will listen to any band, but he refuses to legally buy any music or merch by the artists if the members have poisonous ideas.,

I feel like a black person at a Metal concert is slightly more likely to be cool, and exponentially more likely to not be a racist douche. Are they really that wrong for picking you to talk to? For me I guess it would depend on how comfortable or awkward they were talking to me.

William Cory I was talking about punk shows. So, typically, the likelihood of anyone there being racist would be very low. It was very clear that they were only talking to me because I was black and they wanted to show that they were cool with me being there. My point is the best way to make me feel comfortable would be to treat me like everyone else there. Talk to me if you have a real reason to. Not just because you think it's cool that there's a black guy in a place where black guys normally wouldn't go.

Myke C-Town I think that what you've pointed out here really underscores some serious issues at the moment in the 'white liberal' culture. As a white person who has a fairly ethnically diverse circle of friends, I find that remaining grounded and unpretentious around those friends has probably made them my most loyal and emotionally open friendships. This is of course nice, but it saddens me somewhat that they obviously experience a world that unconsciously segregates people; whether it be via attitudes or tastes, and the tribalism that seems to form around such lifestyles. A lot of white people are more into the idea of appearing accepting in front of others rather than actually having a black friend or whatever. It's extremely superficial and toxic, and in my opinion has been perpetuated by the 'being seen to be' culture of vain consumerism. These attitudes damage the sincerity of the communal relationships that life should be about in the first place. ...sorry that went a bit out there

Hey Mike , I listen to a lot of NSBM and i dont give a fuck about their lyrics or about what they hate. It all comes down to the music , I mean , I can never see myself living without listening to Nokturnal Mortum , Temnozor , Kataxu and so on. Yea , I dont agree with their view on the world and on people, but god damn , the music is so damn great. Fun fact : a lot of people who listen to NSBM think like me . :) Peace and love your shit.

As for the question of MBTI, it really doesn't describe you as a person at all, it just describes how you think most of the time. It has to do more with what types of cognitive processes your brain prioritizes than how you act, the reason why it can be interesting to know is that while everyone can do everything, which is absolutely true, some types tend to be really good at specific things. And some types tend to come with quirks that people with said type shares And that said, as someone who is quite interested in this subject, I would say you look up ENFP instead of ESFP. I get that I sound like a judgmental asshole lol, but the "DON'T PUT ME IN A BOX" was a dead givaway. Think of MBTI as someone that describes how a puzzle comes to together, it doesn't change the picture in the end, just points out all the different parts that make it come together Keep up the good work, you are definitely someone I look up to :D PS: Opinions on Gojira? Cause I find them fucking amazing, who thought lyrics about the environment and saving whales could be soo metal!

Just cant get into black or death metal, the only rock i would listen to is bands like nirvana, alice in chains, wavves, QOTSA. Cant listen to something purposely extreme fr the sake of it. I generally stick to hip hop now, groups like the underachievers, pro era, clear soul forces.

Torn Meniscus Fucked up my knee and my shoulder. Then skating just got to where it wasn't that fun anymore. It wasn't about smooth lines or doing big shit. It was just about how ridiculously technical you could be. I got bored with the industry. I still enjoy watching vids and still have a board, but I don't ride anymore.

I never listen to bands that I know are racist, but Burzum is kind of different. Bcs first of all it's just one guy, and second of all it's not that he's just racist- he's an anti-Christian, church-burning murderer. Plus, the one person he did kill was another white guy. To me, Varg is just traditional crazy, and his racism doesn't even come into the picture. It's like if a some radical Muslim had a metal band, but he was all anti-white or anti-black, wouldn't you still kind of listen to him? I know it's different with white people, but Varg is from a white country that has never been a colonial power, so to me he's just a crazy guy hell bent on his ancient local culture. And I'm cool with that. Not the church-burning and people-killing stuff of course.

I dunno about this one at all, man. Now, before I start, I'll repeat that I don't care what another person listens to. That's totally his business. And even though this video is three years old I still believe that. Maybe even more so now. Moving past that I think, a lot of times, it's not really logical to try to come up with logical reasons as to why you listen to a racist's music. Varg is no exception to the rule in any way, shape or form. I don't think that the band being only one person makes a difference at all. I also don't think him having other groups he hates makes a difference. It just means that his bigotry is less focused. I also don't think he's traditionally "crazy" at all. Varg is a very intelligent man. From his reasons for why he hates Christians in his country to why he killed a man to why he believes in racial separation...he presents compelling arguments for all (even if I don't agree with him). The ignorant racists aren't the ones to fear as far as organizing and actually affecting large groups of people or legislation. (They're just the ones stupid enough to actually carry through on random acts of violence.) It's the smart ones like Varg who have the ability to present their racism in a way that makes sense to people and makes it excusable that are a real threat. All that being said...listen to Burzum all you want. I do. Because I think that's really what this boils down to. He makes good music so you wanna listen to it. So just do that.

I don't know if I can call Varg intelligent. To me he's a deeply confused pagan dork. That's the best way I can put it. Otherwise I completely agree with what you're saying. Also, I'm well aware that what I wrote kind of makes me look like I might be ok with Breivik, which, just for the record, I totally am not. But overall, yeah, I would have to agree that those silent manifesto types probably do gather more followers, and ultimately do present a bigger danger than the likes of Nugent or Anselmo. Also, I don't really listen to Burzum lately. I used to when I was in my late teens and early 20's. Kind of gotten tired of it, as well as the entire black metal scene. I mostly only listen to stuff like Oathbreaker and Mamaleek now. Anywho, thanks for the reply, man )

Yes and no. The main guy behind it has ties to the movement. The True Werewolf (one of his many other bands) is for the most part NS and it was rumored that he was one of the members of White Wolves Kommando. SW has done splits with NS bands and has been associated with some sketchy shit, but I wouldn't say its full on NSBM.

***** They're not directly NSBM as far as I know. But their connections are far too much for me to tolerate. Plus, I've read some of their lyrics and they're clearly leaning towards Nazism. If they're not Nazis they're trying to pretend they are just to appear more extreme than others...which is just as lame. I think it's a bit different from people like Douglas Pierce who has given plenty of clues to him not being racist while playing around with WWII imagery. Still sketchy, but not as much as SW blatantly having lyrics that have Nazi leanings. Plus they fucking suck anyway.

bad hair .day Yeah, I mentioned that in the comment above. I think Douglas P flirts with the whole WW2 imagery in a really silly shock rock kinda way. I'm about 90% sure he's not a Nazi. He just doesn't care to quell the rumors because he probably finds it entertaining and he gets a separate fanbase off it. If irrefutable proof were to come out about Douglas P being a Nazi, I'd have no choice but to get rid of their records. Until then, I dig some DI6.

OMG, don't be so fucking naive. Did you bother to listen to the entire segment or stop it in the middle just to leave this comment? If not, I very clearly said "leave me alone unless you really have a reason to come talk to me." Meaning, don't wander over to me just for the simple reason of talking to the lone black guy. So yes, there are much more important issues regarding racism and when they are sent to me, I'll answer them. Now that that's out of the way... You clearly did NOT listen to the whole thing. I'll tell you what's annoying. The fact that I'm basically having to transcribe my video to you. Who said they were talking to me to emphasize how punk I am? That's ridiculous. I very clearly said that it's obvious that the reason they are talking to me is not because they actually think I'm cool or because I'm "so punk." They're doing it because it makes THEM look cool because they're talking to the perceived outcast. It's a way of making others see them in a good light. Not them seeing me in any certain light. When you're a black kid who has been in the scene for as long as I have, you notice the difference. Maybe you should actually go talk to a few about that. BTW, since you seemed to have missed this, too, my "black guy is more punk than you" comment was a very tongue-in-cheek way of saying that I have every right and reason to be at a punk show as a white person and should not be seen as odd. Lastly, who the hell are YOU to tell me how I should react to things? I don't know you and you don't know me. A good rule of thumb is don't go around telling members of minority groups (which you do not belong to) how to feel about situations. If you disagree, good for you. But attempting to invalidate their experiences by inserting you rather irrelevant assumptions into it is not only pointless, but rude.
