I am a Black man. I was an ex-garage metal guitarist. And I am 'Classic' Metal fan (Priest, Accept, Metallica, Slayer, Dio, ect). After years of having to defend myself from racist bullshit from so called fans about how my skin color doesn't belong at this show, or how I can't play the music because 'my people just don't do it", I gotta thank you, Glen for laying it down for everyone. Major, Fucking, Kudos!

At a slipknot concert when the lights were on some skinhead was on someones shoulders waving a flag with a swastika, my friend asked the black dude standing next to him for the bottle he was holding, he said of course, and nailed the skinhead with with it.

MrGenedancingmachine He probably got worse when the lights went out, he was really in the wrong crowd to do something like that, we were there to hear metal, not see people act like jackasses between sets. Waving a swatstika around in a public area, especially a highstrung and inebriated crowd at a metal concert, is a quick way to cause trouble, regardless of freedom of speech. What did he expect to happen? That the crowd would go, "wow, what a cool guy."

MrGenedancingmachine I didn't, and I wouldn't. I'm just saying offensive behavior can have some backlash. It's not like the bottle hurt his that much, at most it'd have caught him wrong and cut his face. But he just looked in the direction it was thrown and started yelling. And a concert isn't a place where people can talk out their differences from 20 feet away. I mean I could see people being politely asked to move when smoking, or something, but he was just doing it to attract attention and cause something. I've also seen people get punished for moshing rudely, like not helping people up, and being assholes, shit some bands stop playing for. Which just pisses everyone off who was being respectful.

I dont' agree with his apology to be honest. He's sorry he was filmed doing it. Phil has a history of white pride bullshit. There's even a video on KZread of him years ago giving a white pride speech at one of his shows, he's goes off pretty hardcore in that video too. Sure he apologized, but it just shows what he is all about regardless if he apologizes or not.

I'm just trying to understand how one kind of pride is "hatred" while another kind of pride is "cultural identity and healthy." It would appear that only "white pride" is hatred. Isn't there an MMA fighter with "BROWN PRIDE" tattooed on his stomach? Is that hatred 'bullshit' or is he just "positively identifying with his culture"?

Are you stupid, you can't read? I already acknowledged I don't think that shits right either. Also, just because phil said that, doesn't mean he's not going to get ANY consequences from it. He said it in a public place, hailed hitler while he was at it, in front of a bunch of people, and people carry portable cameras around with them everywhere these days. He deserves what he's getting. It's 2016. Grow the fuck up. There's no reason or need to be racist. Why is it ok for a racist to be hateful towards other groups of people, yet when they get backlash for it it's not ok for them to get consequences by the mass public for it? You're probably a god damned skinhead yourself. You're sure acting like one. Also I couldn't give any fucks at all what a drunk guy screaming white power means to you. You are not everybody. MOST people have a problem with racists these days. The fact that you do not, says a whole fuck of a lot about you. Now shut the fuck up, idiot. Good for you Glenn. I've been seeing a lot of casual racism in my personal life recently (I'm in the food industry, which is extremely diverse) and the most important thing we can do is stand up and publicly disagree. Racism lives in a bubble and too often, the people who hold these views are not challenged by the people in their lives. I consider it my duty as a friend and coworker to challenge these ignorant people when the line is crossed. For some of us, our impact is limited to those around us, for others like you, Glenn, a real audience can be reached and I applaud your effort.

And while I applaud him for apologizing and claiming it was a joke, I still don't see what motivated him to do the salute in the first place. I love his music and have for several years, but I cannot condone his actions, apology or not.

On the subject of Metal being inclusive: As inclusive as Metal is, there still seems to be a mentality that revolves around an Elitist mentality that is pressuring people to conform. I can remember a couple years ago after graduating High School that many of my Metal friends (not all of them) were in the scene and liked the music more as a Fraternity & not for the music itself. Some of these people gave me & others shit for being into Core bands or anything that wasn't Thrash, Death, Black Metal or Doom. I personally couldn't care less about that shit because its about the music being good no matter what it is. Not being apart of a club. According to many of those people I was never a true Metalhead. Even though I liked a lot of the bands they liked; I also liked a lot of the bands they hated. & they never tolerated it. Pretty stupid shit. Even after these people aren't in my life anymore, I still see Facebook posts every now & then that bash "false Metal." If members of the Metal community focused more on the music & not being apart of some Exclusive Group like a bunch of "Mean Girls" & Hipsters, then Metal would have a shot at producing many great bands again. Because if there is still an Elitist mentality, the genre/scene won't have any room to grow. As a consequence that isolation will force it to fade away when it never had to.

Tolerate extremist ideas (racism here) in Metal or subject everyone to political correctness or self-censorship? Why just tell Phill a big fuck off. Thats more honest. Why make him apologetic, or make him the way we wanted him to be (AKA peer pressure). Metal has been a subject of censorship in the past and we should be advocates of freedom of speech. This political correctness pisses me off just as well as the ultra nationalistic BS that has been said by some bands.

Seeing as you listen to Metal which evolved out of blues, and the god father of metal is a mixed race fella, without him metal would not exist, whats his name Jimi something? Then there is the simple matter of Roman and greek civilisations providing the basis for most white culture, seeing as your clearly an idiot, you probably dont know that much of the Roman culture, came from the greeks, and much of the Greek culture came from Egypt, while mine and your ancestors were building mud huts and working out which was the sharp end of a spear, they where building fucking Pyramids and charting the skies. Im sure your probably equally unaware that our number system and basis for science(even the word chemistry) evolved out of the Arabs and Moors> its not that White people should feel bad or guilty or black people are bad or should feel guilty, the fact is EVERY culture brings something to the table and in EVERY culture you have ignorant dick heads that give the other people from that race or culture a bad name, i think we have worked out you are maybe one of these people

OR metal is nothing more than a genre of music (and more broadly, art) that, like any form of art, can be used express literally anything the artist wants - yes, even if you consider it hateful, yes, even if you consider it vile, yes, even if it shakes you to your very core. Art is not and _was never_ meant to be all sunshine and rainbows, otherwise every song in the world would be a vapid, soulless carbon copy of "Cumbaya" and you know it. I think bands that promote fascist or other such propaganda are conveying a stupid message, sure, but I'll never trample their absolute right (in the US, at least) to convey that stupid message through metal music. Saying shit like "metal isn't about that!" is just a No True Scotsman dodge, and if you truly want to combat those kinds of messages, you have precisely ONE option that will have any effect whatsoever: Don't support their music. That includes not supporting them monetarily, but more importantly not standing up on your soapbox and trying to shout them down/censor them. Censors are the useful idiots of provocateurs because taboo = attractive, no matter how much you wish it weren't so. TL;DR - I'm a massive fucking racist and me having an even remotely dissenting opinion means I support the Third Reich 2.0, or something. I'm sure that's all that virtue signaling retards walk away with when they read comments like mine, because muh emoshunz is more importent then reezon FUG U NAWZI 😭😭😭

to be honest, i could give a shit if a musician is racist or homophobic. all i can say is it's pretty idiotic to to show it in public since your goal as a musician should be to get as many people as possible to hear your music - it's like running a business. why limit your "customers"? but i'm not gonna be one of these people saying i can't listen to pantera the same or i am devastated to see hetfield and ulrich in that pose... they're not superheroes and i'm not 12. just because i like someone's music does not mean they should be expected to cater to a pretentious romanticized lifestyle. racism is everywhere.

I think it's a bit taking things easy to act like Anselmo did and just pull an excuse video after.. Probably because he saw danger in his business and profit (aka food). There are no excuses for this kind of behaviour, he just deserve to fall into ignorance and be forgotten by the metal community.

+Johnny Flores Yes. I listen to communists if they rock (Rage against the machine) - and that religion has killed tens of millions. You have to be a special kind of stupid to not see the hypocrisy where communism is seen as benevolent edgy still, and the slightest white pride is seen as the Hollywood version of Hitler. Black violence against whites is apparently a non issue and black power is also a cute edgyness.

Jessie Marie you know what makes it hard to “come to together”?? Everything you just said. When I see things many things that Phil and others do that’s racially offensive to many, I’m allowed to feel whatever what I want. Having someone tell me basically “fuck your feelings” followed by “let’s be friends” I’m like 🧐🧐🤨🤨🤨 there will never be a full on race war because fortunately, there many white folks who don’t silence black folks when one of their “cousins” acts like an ass and vice versa. The problem are the ppl who want to tell me how to feel when the subject at hand has no real impact to them. I’d never tell a Jewish individual how to feel when someone says something derogatory about their beliefs or people.

I don't think its fair to even have the conversation "racism in metal" when mainstream hiphop has been racist since its inception, AND, anselmo's specific circumstance was that he was tired of people calling him a racist and skinhead because of the way he looks, so he did the salute to piss people off and it got out of hand. WHETHER OR NOT THAT'S THE MOTIVATION behind what he did is irrelevant. We have rappers with names like "ghostface killer" which is a racist name no matter how you slice it, and Wu tang gets mentioned on mainstream sources constantly. If its ok to be a racist rapper or rap group, then let the one or two out of every 1,000 metal bands that want to be racist alone and let them be racist too. Fair is fair. Its actually alot less common to see racism in metal than most other genres because metal is the genre of outcasts and outcasts know how it feels to be ostracized and tend to be accepting. With a few exceptions, metal is pretty much racism free, and the few examples of racist metal bands are already disavowed... again, UNLIKE IN HIPHOP which is more mainstream, and embraces their racist artists. So this shouldn't be a conversation. Not 4 years ago, and not today.

Ghostface Killah is taken from a karate flick. Learn your facts before you spew fucking bullshit out your mouth. The fact you had to go talk about whole OTHER genre instead of acknowledging white metal guys can be insensitive towards minorities shows how unwilling you are to admit there’s a problem. As an Asian guy I’ve experienced more racism in metal than hip hop. Sucks because I liked that music but go on about how knowledgeable you are.

  • @bryanharrison3889

@@noodlehoppa7212 I am aware of the origin of the name, and no matter how you slice it, its a racist name. We have COUNTLESS examples of hip hop racism, and hip hop is mainstream. Hip hop's racism is universally accepted. And as an asian person, I'm sure you'll continue to experience racism until you start looking at yourself as a human being instead of a race modifier. And as far as you personally experiencing more racism in metal, you must have lived in the one area on the planet where racism in metal is tolerated, because I've been in the metal community since the early 80's and I know damn well that racism in metal is almost nonexistent. As a matter of fact, aside from a few racist bands over the decades, I've met maybe 25 fans in metal in my lifetime, that were racist. So maybe you're not getting friction because you're asian, maybe its because you're an asshole who is too busy identifying yourself as asian to make friends and enjoy yourself. Or maybe its all in your head. Who knows. But my original point stands, and you've only proven it more true. Especially since it can't be argued that hip hop tolerates racism in its ranks, and racist artists win awards, get radio play, etc. The reason I brought that conversation up is because THAT is a problem. There's not enough racism in metal for it to EVER be a problem. The metal community has always been accepting. Just because metal heads don't like YOU doesn't mean they're racist. Don't come over here trying to piss on facts.
