I'm more pantheist than anything, I don't believe in the afterlife (I think it's a highly flawed concept) but I love the idea of people dying happily and hopefully. I actually encourage religion, as long as no shitnuts take it too far lol

I personally avoid buying records from artists who's views I find objectionable (Burzum), though I enjoy the art I don't want to support them.

Thanks for the video response! I agree that you are not immune to criticism for the themes seeing as you said, it works both ways. I just think this is the sort of thing most people should be aware of when they start getting into extreme metal. They should be aware these themes exist and if they want to stand against those themes, then thats fine, but at the end of the day, does it effect your life if I listen to a Graveland record? No. I just think people should pick their battles and demonizing someone for their choice of music isn't one of those battles.

You can't start buying up extreme metal records and then think it's your job to change extreme metal from the inside. That shit doesn't always work. You can't walk into someone else's house and demand that they change the wallpaper. You're more than welcome to voice your opinion on the subject...but don't be surprised if the people that live there kick you out. At the end of the day, I think people are welcome to say what they don't like...but this mentality of "you have to agree with what I think" is a load of shit. Now, of course, I can personally wish you wouldn't purchase Graveland records (haha!) but I fully support your right to buy them to your heart's content!

+Myke C-Town I was going to make a video but you put it far better than I was going to. Yes, what generally bothers me is people coming into extreme metal and pissing on the rug ("that rug really tied the room together"). You can speak out against it, you can choose not to listen to it and not support the content that offends you but it bothers me when you listen to extreme metal and then want to put unreasonable limitations on it. I'm always worried that the extreme end of political correctness is going to invade what should be a free zone from that kind of censoring mentality.

Very thought-provoking video. When you surround yourself with this type of music and subject matter, it's very easy to become numb to it and not even give it a second thought.

The problem with anti-muslim ideas is that they are very closely related to racism, not only that people uses muslim and Middle Eastern/South Asian interchangeably (to the point where Sikhs have been the victim of anti-muslim attacks) , but that muslims in the western world faces discrimination and violence because in ways that christians don't. If people want to criticise religion than that is fine, but incentivising discrimination is not.

@Bili Warren you really missed the point. Those that are anti-religious can only be anti-religious and treat all religion as bad. But there are some that are anti-religious but have an obsession with people of Middle Eastern accent.

I despise the horrible things done in the name of Christianity, Islam or Judaism but I'll never make it a race thing because it's not that at all.

@@Knochenbrigade The opposite side of that same coin is that those same bands get butt hurt over the fact that promoters cancel their shows or don't want to book them in the first place because of their lyrical themes. People and especially artists should be allowed to say anything they want freely and openly. Meaning there should never be a law against it. That doesn't mean that your words have no real world consequences. If a venue chooses to cancel your show or refuse to book you that is a real life consequence. It is not treading on freedom of speech because venues are not government institutions and are therefore, not obligated to give anyone a soapbox to stand on. When artists complain about this it highlights two things. Certain artists claiming to hate the people who voice an opinion about their lyrical content but they still want those same people's money. And the second thing is that it proves how mindless a lot of "shocking" content really is. If an artists really stands behind what they are writing then being "cancelled" shouldn't bother them. They should be proud of the fact that they are so offensive. I doubt GG Allen ever shed a tear over being cancelled and he really lived the shit that he sang about. But I don't think half of these artists even believe in the things they are writing about. If you use racism or whatever stupid lyrical theme as a way to get attention you can't get mad about the type of attention you get. And if you are an idiot who truly belives in bullshit race theories or whatever the fuck then you already know you are out of step with most people and it shouldn't come as a surprise. Especially in a scene that runs parallel to the punk/hardcore/crust scenes, and whether blackmetal heads like it or not they do share something of a common fanbase with these scenes and therefore can't be completely removed from scene politics. Do I agree with every single cancellation? No. But I don't own a venue so I have no right to tell a club owner or promoter that they are obligated to book a band because of freedom of speech. And that's not what freedom of speech is in the first place.

Man, you are the coolest guys ever. At first, watching dead end videos I thought you were the stereotypical angry black man of the group, but now I know you are a very intellectually gifted and articulate man, and I am so glad I subscribed. Kudos Myke. May I get to enjoy your videos and your opinions for a long, long time.

I listened to a bunch of bands, and every single one had music that was as knuckleheaded and unimaginative as their views are. A real dead end of music in all respects imho

You said most of the things I would have said. I don't have much to add. In my opinion the freedom to ignore is more fundamental then the freedom to speak. My opinion on this stuff changed as I got older. When I was younger I loved the "sport" of trying to be offensive as possible. However, by the time I turned 30 I found almost all attempt to shook me as either irritating or pathetic. Just give me some honesty and insight. Fuck all the other bullshit. Keep up the videos

Not in their lyrics, but in their everyday life. I concur with your sentiment. I support their right to their expression, however, fuck them! I will just burn all their shit. I have the power to control whom I support and although I will miss them, I am better off not supporting any type of people who promote hierarchy based upon something as divisive as phenotype. Very interesting video. Been a music fan all my life and a metal supporter since I was 17 (I'm 44 now). But when I was in college I despised extreme metal (not on lyrical grounds but just because of how it sounded) I am very much in to extreme metal now (black metal much more so than death metal). I agree that some of the fans in the genre can be ignorant fuckers but I refuse to let ignorant fuckers prevent me from listening to the music or being open that I like the music. I will be attending Black Sabbaths farewell concert in Dublin next year and have a shiny new Burzum tee shirt to wear. I am not making a statement about Varg Vikernes political views I am saying that Burzum rocks me but I am prepared to give an account of myself if anyone interacts with me (afterall as metallers we all know that one of the purposes of wearing the tee shirts is to see if anyone else digs the band also). I have had some arguments in comments with NSBM types who all strike me as folks who paint their prejudices on to the music rather than much of this music being particularly right-wing. Anyway, I am glad you are sharing your views Myke, keep up the good work.

I think your thoughts on separating the art and the artist or the context is a pretty hard concept for a lot of people to follow especially when people talk about albums and musicians that have been regarded to such a high degree. I personally think Loveless by MBV for example wouldn't be held in such a high regard by the music press and community if people didn't discuss the context or the musicians themselves. (IE the bankruptcy of the of label and the extremely long recording sessions)

I bought that MBV LP in 1991, and have never researched the back story. I just hear how groundbreaking it is with my ears, not from what I read or not. I find that theory in that specific case completely off. But I'd agree if you talked about Burzum.

Even if you take the position that all that is created is art, which I personally have never agreed with, it would be interesting to see you defend that position. Sorry if you addressed it here and I missed it, but how do you feel about artists that hold sexist/racist/homophobic/etc. beliefs but don't address them in their lyrics or musical themes? Do you still find that it affects how you listen to the music or whether or not you support the artist? I'm getting more and more into black metal, and it's like I'll find a band that holds NS beliefs but mainly writes songs about nature, but I still don't feel 100% right about listening to it. Bigoted stuff is all I really care about though. Gore is whatever. I can't understand what they're saying most of the time anyway, so it doesn't make much of a difference.

+Teej Hastie I don't personally care about a band's personal beliefs when it comes to simply listening to the music. I draw the line at monetary support. Meaning I won't buy or promote a band if the members are outspoken bigots. I'll download their albums and listen to the music all day though.

Great points. Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean you have to listen. I mean, c'mon. Saying "extreme metal is too extreme" is like saying "punk rock has too many anti-government/anti-establishment messages."

I love extreme metal myself as well but I too avoid (or try to at least) the ones who do contain racist themes. One I can think of was Peste Noire, I hear good things about em and the first thing I seen from them was an Aryan Supremacy demo? Err... Not tryna bother with that. - Whoever reads this and loves that band keep on rocking man, I ain't the audio police. I just don't like that particular type of seasoning on my food if you know what I mean. I, like Mike respect peoples rights to create/say what they want, but like Mike said again Freedom Of Speech doesnt mean you cant get checked for what you say. I remember Mike talking about policing the N word saying how he's not gunna spend his time telling people who can and cant say it and just avoid the morons (who shouldnt) that do. That's pretty much my take on the metal and metalheads that fall into this particular topic of discussion.

+BlackoutChamber Hey, a few thoughts about Peste Noire. I'm going to assume that you don't speak / read French (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaking). As a native French speaker I'm must say that most of this band's lyrics are written in quite a goofy and caricatural way. It is really difficult to take them seriously to be honest. And I'm not saying that because the lyrics are so stupid that they become funny, I'm saying that because it feels like it was genuinely written in a comedic way. If anything, his lyrics are parody of actual racist lyrics. But I do get that from the outside it might look like that, it's just that the subtleties that makes his work hilarious in French are more likely to be lost in translation (especially when he writes stuff in middle age French).

+SeaOfVomit You're welcome :) If you want to check Peste Noire, try "l'Ordure A l'Etat Pur", I think it's his best work by far : it's pushing the boundaries of the genre, it's ambitious and complex but never gets boring IMO. Even if you don't like it, it will still be an interesting listen.

He tries to cloak his bullshit in this "all cultures have the right to exist...just separately." So sure...his ideology is slightly better than pure racists...but it's still garbage. This whole trying to make strong distinctions between racism and racialism is just stupid to me. All that to say...it doesn't really matter that his lyrics aren't racist if he, himself, is.

It really boils down to this. Lyricism in extreme metal has always been about shock value, provoking a reaction. No-one of any intelligence really believes that it's acceptable to pull viscera from a Virgin's nether regions. It's entertainment. As far as I know, the overwhelming majority of metal musicians have never claimed that their lyrics were anything else either.

I listen to extreme metal for the overall sound of the music and I don't really care about lyrics that much, I listen to a lot of death metal and usually it's just mindless bullshit about killing people anyways so I don't pay attention to the lyrics unless they're actually good or well written.

I don't think the messages will effect the marketability in Metal. Not because Metal is not a valid genre, but because it is consistently underground stuff. Until Metal (especially Metal with these particular offensive themes) becomes more widely accepted and listened to then their themes will receive more attention. The underground of any scene can pretty much do as it pleases because the general public's opinion is not regarded.

Panzer division marduk is an album about a fictional world war 2 exept with satan instead of hitler. The whole album sounds like a war machine rolling over the world and the lyrics is what makes the drums sound like machinegun fire and explotions. Actually the lyrics compliment the music in a way no other black metal band ive heard. Is this worse than a computer game where hitler is trying to kill you?

I think part of this never-ending debate is heavily in debt to the politically correct world we live in nowadays, where people are constantly up-in-arms about every little non-issue out there. Who cares if a band is writing "offensive" lyrics, last I checked we had freedom of speech in America, which doesn't mean "just the freedom for things I like, everything else is banned." Like Myke states, if a band is putting out music that offends you - just don't listen to it or buy it. Getting worked up about something that doesn't affect you in the slightest is a waste of energy and frankly, more indicative of the sad state of your own purposeless life. Lastly, I think most intelligent metal fans all realize the common themes in extreme metal like murder, suicide, violence, drug use, etc are usually just part of the "aesthetic" of these genres, sometimes even in a tongue-in-cheek manner that I'm sure hardly reflects any of the musicians own ways of life. Unless of course they are complete assholes like Varg, in which case... yeah. But at least Burzum's music is good, unlike the personal characteristics of the artist behind the music.

+Bastard Species There's a huge difference. Sexism is a lot more rampant than murder. Your average person that you may run into on a daily basis will have inherent misogynistic ideas whether they know it or admit it or not. The same can't be said about murder. It would be a lot easier to convince someone to reassess their views on women than it would be to convince them to think about murder in a positive light. Sexism is a very real thing. And murder is, too, but again...I think one is a lot more prevalent in people's minds. Sure, we should be bothered by both...but the sexist, racist or homophobic lyrics would affect me a lot more.

So basically what I got from this video was let people say what they want but let the free market work itself out. If people are saying outrageous things then other people won't buy their music. I don't think its cool for people to say homophobic or racial things but I don't believe it should be censored. I believe we should allow them to do whatever the hell they want and allow the people to respond however they want even if that means they sell very few records because only a few want to hear that.

I don't care about people's political affiliations but I tend to disagree with the vast majority of what the average Republican believes. But I just didn't see any correlation between what I was talking about and Republican policies. But it's cool.

Isn't metal supposed to reflect the darkest aspects of humanity? It's showing us the very depths of our spyche that many of us are afraid to realize. What topics could be better for that than racism, greed, gluttony, morbid curiosity and misogyny?

Regarding racism in metal, I haven't really seen much other than from the typical NSBM crowd or a particular lovely statement made by Malevolent Creation. Death metal and thrash metal don't seem to have many racist bands or views. Of course, black metal has always been open to ideological views of all kinds, typically right-wing. But other than NSBM, I don't see racism, or homophobia, as being all that prevalent in metal in general.

As long as it sound good I, and many metalheads, dont don't what the lyrical themes are, thats why Aryan blood has a strong cult following, none of their listeners agree with their ideologies they just like the music. But yeah dont listen to a band of you don't agree with them, i miss out on all of stoner doom bands and bands like acid witch cause drugs had a negative effect on my family life but i dont tell other people to stop listening to music like that or stop making it

Sorry? Maybe I'm stupid or missing something but most of the bands I have read lyrics from don't have misogynistic/racist/homophobic themes? I don't always read all the lyrics but it doesn't seem THAT prevalent.

I actually should rephrase that I suppose. I guess a more accurate observation is that I don't see anything "offensive" that most people listening to the music (including me) would actually take seriously even enough to be offended by. Not to mention I'm more prone to listen to prone to listen to older Black or Death bands that have satanic/esoteric/fantasy themes then I am shit like Pornogrind.

For example as much as I enjoy Mortician or Devourment to throw out some big names and presumably "offenders," I have never for a second taken any of their imagery or lyrical content seriously.

+Ethan Armijo LOL Devourment - Baby Killer is a perfect example. I mean I don't think anyone takes offense to it but people who don't listen to extreme metal comment on the song like "omg wtf etc etc" and that's what is being talked about here.

Haven't watched the video yet but I definitely think some are. I mean there are some black metal bands that are genuinely white supremacist nazi's, and it makes me apprehensive to check out some of the older black metal bands even though I really like black metal. As far as misogynist music, I definitely think there is some out there too. Though I can differentiate between fiction and reality. I've listened to some death metal that's about women being torn up and raped by thorn monsters, but I know that is fiction. The bands that really strike me as misogynist are some of these post hardcore and metalcore bands. Idk if I just grew out of it, but I can't listen to some of the bands that I used to like from those genres. A lot of those bands have a lot of sexually frustrated and aggressive lyrics towards women and say some rapey shit.

+Myke C-Town Bands like Dance Gavin Dance, Alesana, Asking Alexandria. Idk if I'm using the right sub genre here, but personally when I think of misogynistic I think of these really angsty bands who have lyrics with a lot of sexual frustration and slurs. Or bands like DGD that describe some pretty fuzzy scenes that sound like date rape.

Just a side note. Doesnt add or take away from any of your points, which i overwhelmingly agree with, but in the case of islam, you cant say every member of islam willingly made that choice. Many people live in theocracys and will be beheaded in the streets for apostasy. I suppose from a philosophical stand point people can think whatever they want. But from a practical standpoint. Im sure there are a good chunk of muslims who would ditch the religion in a instant. Especially in places like Iran and Egypt. Im sure you know this. I just wanted to mention that as a sort of caviot.

Sure. That's totally a fair point. But I'd imagine those that are forced into the religion would, most likely, not be the ones getting mad when the religion is criticized. Or maybe I'm wrong about that...

+jimmy73311337 Such a boring argument. You may not care, but some people do care about the music, artists and themes they support and promote. Sometimes it's not simply about something sounding good. It's about how the band makes you feel. And if the band is directly insulting you and your heritage then...they care.

Racism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Child Abuse are not compatible with Metal, in my Oppinion. I mean there is no Flesh and no shitty Ideology in Hell, or so. And the true innocent are precious. Infant Annihilator are great at the instrumental Part, but their Lyrics make me take my Spirit to the Toilet and make it puke. Otherwise Viking-Metal is great.

PipeofPeril What about these themes say that they'er not compatible with, arguably, the most extreme music genre (next to harsh noise)? Just because you personally don't enjoy those themes doesn't mean the genre itself can't portray them for someone else's enjoyment.

If you buy a mint copy you are supporting the artist. You bought it from someone who in turn bought it in the hopes of selling it. And besides, stock might be replaced. If you buy a used copy things may be a little different.

The argument that they can choose theyr religion depends on the kind of anti muslim/jew people. For example the nazis dont care if one believes something, for them jews are a race. Same goes for some anti islam people.

Myke for President! and on the art for artist's sake idea. I completely agree. For example, Varg is a dickhole, but Burzum (at least in the 90's) was killer!!!! And on that note, extreme artists (mainly black metal) used to relentlessly ridicule gays, but yet they all loved Judas Priest. These dicknuts always have justifications for their stupidity. (Rob Halford was the first person i could think of, I mean, Brian Cook from sumac/russian circles is gay, Gaahl is gay (to provoke god or some shit like that), and many many more, but like i said halford was the first I could think of.)
