    Important! Last year WD changed the SN550 significantly, the SN550 in my graphs is the older model and is likely performing better than any SN550 you might buy in 2021. Probably not a huge deal anymore today since the SN570 will replace old SN550 stock soon enough, but do keep that in mind when are looking for deals! After this was called out WD made a statement saying they won't do this again (full statement below). To hold them to this I will share the exact markings on my SN570 SSD. When you buy one of these drives (especially further into the future), please let me know when your drive has significantly different part numbers! Controller: Sandisk 20-82-10048-A1 1331ZU5Q1FL China Flash: Sandisk 014130 1700 China 1293DCGHS02K Full WD Statement on changing their SSD components _ "In June 2021, we replaced the NAND in the WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD and updated the firmware. At the time, we updated the product data sheet. For greater transparency going forward, if we make a change to an existing internal SSD, we commit to introducing a new model number whenever any related published specifications are impacted. We value our customers and are committed to providing the best possible solutions for their data storage needs."_

    LOL you are totally prepared for it. They better not pull that crap again. As cheap as the WD SN550 has gotten, learning about it left a bad taste in my mouth. D-mn bate and switch tactics used by some manufacturers! The should be ashame of themselves. Kingston is up to the same disgusting tactics with its new 'NV2-drive. I have seen performance results differ from 3000-5000 for the read part of it. They refuse to publish the insides stating that it will follow the PCIe ver4X4 standards (which say nothing, especially since it sometimes clocks down below ver3 speeds). We should just avoid these cheapest drives which don't are open about the innards of the drives...

    To be fair the sn570 can now be found in 2 TB. And I know it does not have dram cache however, for the average user the thing is still blistering fast. When comparing this to a Gen 4 m.2 with game load times I could not tell the difference with the Gen 4 m.2 being faster only by a few milliseconds.

  • @bbrr12

    @bbrr12

    So wrong, a PCI Gen 4.0 SSD can be more than 50% at game loading, the slower the game loading time the more it makes a difference. You can see some benchmarks and demostrations

    6:03 thats the actual TLC NAND write speed(one of the most important spec you should look for when buying a pcie nvme ssd) it happens when the slc cache fills up it will rise up again once the slc cache becomes empty. Recently Western digital was caught swapping their TLCs in the new revision of SN550 with slower TLC like TLC write speeds of 390mbps before it was in 500mbps i think, luckitly i got the old revision ;) .

    Always great to see these SSD reviews! I feel like I have never seen any outside of this channel... If this gets to be a cheaper storage option than a SATA equivalent, I'll definitely pick this up for a 1TB drive dedicated for games. If games don't become normalized towards PS5 load times soon enough, no reason to go that much faster. So, great detailed review for a great budget SSD!

    This is a good drive for the average user. I think it would be worth mentioning that sustained write speeds will only matter if you are moving large files to another SSD that is at least as fast. For downloading games you would need to have at least like 5 gigabit internet for the sustained write speed to start holding you back.

    Honestly 550-600 MB/s is still overkill for pretty much all end user applications and plenty to avoid bottlenecks in most productivity workloads. Unless you for some reason regularly transfer huge files from one NVMe SSD to another or do the same via thunderbolt it barely makes any difference. And even then, let's say you end up with a 100GB RAW video file or huge project file, that's still only gonna take around 3 minutes.

    I had super slow steam downloads and couldnt explain why. And I have fast internet (800mbps).Regularly dropping to literally 0 B/S where it would basically not move and the game that should be downloaded in 10 minutes literally took over an hour. So I thought maybe its problem on steam end but then when I was constantly getting this super slow downloads it had to be something else. So I tried to download the very same game on my main disc instead (which is kingston kc300 where also my os is) and it work fine and it was consistent without randomly droping to 0b/s where it literally doesnt move. So I realised its due to the WD Blue SN570 disc. My main disc is getting full hence I install rest of my games on the secondary WD Blue SN570 but this is super annoying so Ill probably sell the SN570 and get samsung 980 instead which is for similiar price anyway but it has more consistent speeds.

    i'm kinda glad all the hardware tech companies went ballz-to-the-wallz with ip=>product heading into chip shortage, it gave them an economic motivation to continue to take risks. I think we can mostly thank tsmc for that, but fabs have also stepped up to work on bleeding edge performance, economy, and scale. When availability is no longer an issue and some of this burgeoning tech is matured it will be a different landscape, to be sure.

    It's a very important question! I talk about this often, but not in every video: SSDs under 1TB always perform worse, typically in write performance. 1TB is usually where performance levels out (and 2 TB SSDs usually perform about the same as 1 TB versions of the same model.) My advice: Settle for 500GB if that's all you need, 250GB is rarely worth it (lower performance even, bad price/gigabyte). But 1 TB & 2TB is where you reach the best balance of performance and value today.

Edit : and it did ! 1 min 15s+ for loading Cities:Skylines vs 7 min+ , helped by more than double the RAM and 4× the VRAM to boot !

    I am very happy to have discovered this channel when I was updating my PC from 15 years ago. I still have a conventional HD and I just can't decide which SSD to go with, for now I'm saving money and intending to have an intermediate SSD for OS and programs (Solidworks Cad), I'm in doubt between SN570 and Kingston NV2 (both 500GB). Or would it be better to get a little more cash and go for a high-end SSD?

    Not sure how prices in your area are, but 1TB is barely more expensive than 500GB here. A 1TB SSD will be a bit faster as well. Between the two I'd say NV2, but maybe see if you can grab a Crucial P3 Plus for a similar price. Or just say what options you have and I'll give my 2 cents.

    That's a fairly specific setup, it's hard to say how much it will matter and it depends on your workflow. Any large writes to the nas should probably still be affected negatively. If it works fine, I'd say leave it, if you run into issues with transfer speeds, a 980 Pro would be a good choice.

  • @TechTesters

    @TechTesters

    2 жыл бұрын

    4TB really limits your choices, and most Gen3 drives (like the SN 750) are "ok" but not amazing, while others are QLC and imho not suitable for pro use because of that.. If you can afford it, I'd probably say Firecuda 530 or Kingston KC3000 (or Fury Renegade, same SSD different look). Corsair MP600 Pro XT might be good too (but I haven't tested it yet). Those are Gen4, but those are really solid performers overall and will easily travel with you to a future PC upgrade. If you don't plan to upgrade to gen 4 platforms any time soon, probably the Corsair MP510 or SN750 then.

    07:13 No, speed drops because the cache memory built inside the SSD gets filled at first 4-5 seconds. Cache memory has very high speed of RW speeds. But after filling it, it just gets busy in offloading the data into actual NVME storage. So, technically, when cache fills, SSD speed gets limited to SATA speed which is that of the NVME media. And that's why WD is guilty of advertising false RW speeds as we should get that speed throughout the complete data transfers; at least for 5gb of data transfers. Then thats what is called as the promised speed.

    Some used the TLC etc in single mode as a bit of dynamic cache. So there can sometimes be multiple methods. (It is not separate cache memory, but the existing memory used in a different mode if enough is free, or at least up to the limit it's set for)
