Right in the feels. Greatest local news station ever, ever, ever. Miss those days...
"WCVB-TV Channel 5 and You" and "Your tune to Channel 5, Where the News Comes First" is my favorite quotes.
The first news open for "The Late News" looked like some SNL type intro, with guys laughing and having fun as they were getting ready to start the show. The music sounds like something out of WBBM in Chicago at that same time period(71 or 72).
I'm glad i was around in the golden age of Boston newscasts.
That "5" has been around a long time. Proof that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You see that, Tegna?

this is awesome! chet you may be gone but your not forgotten.
These were the days when journalists were journalists. And what a team, Chet Curtis, Tom Ellis, Bob Clinkscale, Don Gillis, Natalie Jacobsen, Anne McGrath, Jim Boyd...a literal Boston News Hall of Fame, at one station... RIP Chet Curtis..

My favorite WCVB opens are when they had the Hearst-Argyle Camera graphics!
Starting at 1:35, put in Phil Tonken with the v/o... Now... Tom Dunn... Sara Lee Kessler... Russ Salzberg with Sports... and Lloyd Lindsay Young's Weather... this is News 9 at Noon.
Awwww..memories! I had a crush on Dick Albert back in the day! ha! (Hey, I was 18 or 19, a kid!) WCVB was my favorite station till I left New England in the early 90s. I still get homesick. Thanks for sharing!

Mary Mclocke Dick Albert may be gone but he will not be forgotten ☄
At 1:19 The theme tune for News Center 5 was also used on an 'Spider-man' 1967 Episode 'Spider-man meets Skyboy'.at the beginning of the episode there.
Some of those opens featured voiceovers from ABC promo announcer Ernie Anderson. His voice was also featured in some of the opens for channel 12 in providence.
After that first newscast intro, I expect one of the anchors to yell JACKPOT !!!
13:05 - The opener recognizes that their DTV signal is on channel 20.
In 2017, WCVB Longtime Meterologist Dick Albert dies at 73.
R.I.P. Chet Curtis.

He and Natalie Jacobsen were New England journalism personified. God rest his soul.
Hearst Opens were good from 1995-2005 (when the stations changed from the Camera Theme), then they sucked until around 2012.
RIP Chet

Best weather forecasters ever like waking up in the mornings listening to Bob Copeland and at Dick Albert and weekends Barry Burbank
The opening starting at 1:35 is the one that I remember the most (and it remained, in one variation or another for nearly ten years). And with all of the cool graphics and quick edits, it was a very sophisticated intro for a local newscast during the '70s.

Yes, that’s the one I remember the most as well, from my childhood.. I remember watching Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, and when they were over, my mom would change the channel from 2 to 5, and then we’d see and hear that music.
Also at 9:43 in The North West of England we had similar titles to News Center 5 on Granada Tonight in the late 1990's/Early 2000's that stated 'Bringing The News Home to You' instead of 'Coverage You Can Count On'.which was loosely based on.
That first one is just mad.
Jack Hynes and John Henning were also teamed for a time, after Henning left WNAC (Channel 7) and before he went to WBZ. Henning had also been at the old Channel 5, WHDH, for a period, and, I think, on one of the UHF newscasts as well. Chet Curtis & Natalie Jacobson were also the original midday news team when WCVB first went on the air. Curtis had been the last sole midday news anchor weekdays on the old WHDH-TV (Channel 5). Curtis was also the original host of "Chronicle." I read somewhere Curtis knew he would be the one to leave WCVB after he and Jacobson divorced. I don't get this, as Curtis had more seniority in the news business. I wonder, perhaps, if Curtis had to leave 'CVB because he was told his former wife tested better in focus groups and/or the local Arbitron/Nielsen ratings showed Jacobson the bigger draw of the two. In any event, I also read somewhere NECN, the acronym for New England Cable News, which became Curtis' new "assignment" after leaving 'CVB, was jokingly referred to as "Never EVER Cross Natalie!" In the divorce, Jacobson, effectively, got to remain as anchor on 'CVB, while Curtis was more or less "demoted" to a less-visible spot on a local cable TV news station. In any event, I think this was a horrible situation, that 'CVB should have found some way to retain Curtis, a very capable and intelligent journalist. Surely Curtis could have anchored one evening newscast apart from Jacobson, or he the late news while she remained on the early evening news program, etc. Oh well, all a moot point now, as Curtis is deceased and Jacobson retired. But 'CVB is still the best of the four major Boston TV stations when it comes to local newscasts. Ed Harding, Heather Unruh, etc. are fine, and nice that Mike Lynch and Harvey Leonard, two more old pros, are still around. But I always assumed "Chronicle" host Anthony Everett was being groomed as Curtis' replacement even when Curtis was still at the station. Actually, with no disrespect to Harding, that still wouldn't be a bad idea.

Chet Curtis, Natalie Jacobson, Dick Albert, and Jim Boyd were the ones that left WCVB.
The WCVB Opens from 1990-1993 are certainly one of my all time favorite news opens.
The music at 0:08 sounds like they just randomly banged on pots and pans in their kitchen and thought that it sounded good.
9:58 Very similar to Granada Tonight in the UK in 1999. It's a surprise how the UK uses some of the american news openings.

I noticed that the first piece of music heard was also found at the beginning of a couple of BASADA game shows, the original Jackpot and Pass the Buck.

Wasn't Susan Wornick married to Bob Lobel, then thy split? and wasn't Natalie Jacobson married to Chet Curtis ? Oy Via ! I remember Natalie would fall al over Dick Albertson. Where did Susan Burke go to ? I remember coming home from summer school in 1977 and see Susan and Jim Boyd doing the noon time news. Susan was beautiful, very Irish looking like she was grabbed up from County Kerry !
