I was lucky enough to get a tour of the WBZ studios in 2003-2004 - I was studying radio in college, and one of my instructors was a producer for their news radio division. I remember learning two things - 1) Gil Santos was quite pleasant, and 2) the studio that held the news desk was much smaller than it appears to be on TV.

Westinghouse-era 4 was legendary. As was most of their other stations as they treated their stations so well. Not the greatest company by any means but a great TV station owner.

The "CBS 4 News" titling was short lived around the period of 2002-2004. The network realized that all the Group W stations they inherited were more oriented to call sign, KDKA, KPIX, and WBZ more so. These stations had rich histories in their respective markets being the first tv stations in those cities to sign on. KDKA and WBZ also had powerhouse radio stations as well. WBZ reverted back to 'WBZ News" after "CBS 4 News" was really not well received and the station was mired in third place in many time periods, early evening especially. Some of the openings and theme music after WBZ transitioned to CBS were quite horrific, "News 4 New England"(circa 1997) being perhaps the worst. Now WBZ uses the same CBS branding and theme music (Enforcer by Frank Gari) as all the other network o&o's. I miss the old days of WBZ when they were "The One 4 All" and "Today's 4." Highly recommend checking out some of the vintage 'BZ campaigns as a Group W station availableto view here on KZread. They are real classics!

Also when I was visiting Massachusetts, WBZ was covering a local story in the area and the cameraman was nice enough to let me inside the news van and hold the microphone to do a photo op 😄Bill Shields was working on a story in another vehicle. 👍

No clips of Shelby Scott, Don Kent, Jack Chase or Tom Ellis!!! Some of the Eyewitness News intros before this time were more memorable, can’t believe how bad most of these were in comparison to NewsCenter 5 or even Ch 56 10 o’clock news intros. The current CBS4 intros they are using are actually quite good

Surprised how far back they abandoned “Eyewitness News”. And I miss “Almanac”; wbz signed on about 6:40AM, and Almanac, with a rooster logo, was 6:45-6:59 with jack chase & don Kent. Jack chase had a cup of coffee in front of him. Don Kent always started the weather with “good morning everyone “ and jack always closed with “so long and make it a good day”

IIRC Liz Walker basically left of her own accord to spend more time with her family and become a minister. Bruce Schwoegler was pushed out, I don’t know why, Bob Lobel was pushed out I think. jack williams, they tried to replace him 2-3 times with young hunky looking anchors but they didn’t do well with the audience so they kept having to bring jack back as the primary anchor.
