Most of this year i've been getting 2-3 hours sleep most nights. I knew it was from being overweight and having bad posture. Once I fixed those 2 things my sleep went back to 7-8 hours perfect sleep.

I always wonder how these guys travel and deal with the changes and seems like they are so natural at it. I could do it when I was younger and it’s harder as you get older. I guess misery loves company because it’s nice to hear that a great athlete like JJF thinks about it and sometimes struggles. I got to surf with him once! Also, nice espresso machine!

3:12 this is 100 percent true. when you start stressing about the fact that you cant get to sleep that makes it 10 times worse. you just have make yourself not care and stay calm.

this was really interesting--as someone for whom sleep is also so important. i'm glad he's paying attention to this. i'm so impressed how he has become so much more in tune with his body in many ways and is taking great care of himself. the part about not freaking out is important. and i think the being able to go without sleep on the boat is also that he's not using his body to such a huge degree as when he is surfing.

the ice bath will raise your internal core temperature as your body warms you back up. Recommend skipping that step

Unless you actually speaking from experience, I think you're wrong. There is definitely something in our make-up that makes us go to sleep when changing from cold to warm. I use the same trick when can't sleep, get cold as possible then the warming up when you jump into bed helps put you too sleep. Think snuggling under a warm blanket when it's cold, how good is that feeling... zzzzzz

No, the original comment is correct. It works in reverse. When you get in hot water your body begins to cool its internal temperature to counteract the heat. When you get in cold water your internal temperature starts to rise for the same reason. That’s why it’s recommended to do ice baths to wake up and extend your internal clock/raise your body temperature. Hot baths at night to relax for sleep and cool your internal temperature. Signaling to your body it’s time for sleep.

Yes thats correct and aligned with the science. That being said some people sleep well after an ice bath , you can lean towards a parasympathetic arm of the nervous system after the plunge if you're in warmth and comfort etc

i know that typicallly it is thought that a warm bath helps you sleep because as you gradually cool down it promotes sleep. so i too am wondering how immediately going to cold would help

  • @BelleTolles

zero responsibilities? you think the training and effort he puts into trying to be world champion has zero responsibilities? And add to that having his own new company and being involved with other companies also. As well as having a new baby. There are all kinds of responsibilities. Just because his look fun to you doesn't he mean he doesn't work his butt off, and has since he was a young child, helping to provide for his family

@@BelleTolles They get nannies for their children, it's standard practice. You cannot compete after staying up all night. eventually they just pass the buck - as most people would. But don't act like it's practical or possible for normal adults with responsibilities to do this. It's not.

you really think it's so easy? The amount of work it takes to be a world champion has wiped out most people who do it. The guys who've done it back to back usually are not able to compete the next year. He is a top level athlete and that takes huge effort, including training. Look at the toll it has taken on his body, until he is learning how to do the things he has to. He also has his own company he is responsible for as well as other business and charitable ventures. And a new baby. so don't diminish his efforts as if it's just some walk in the park. if it's so easy, why aren't you doing it?

@BelleTolles stoll nothing compared to someone who works 60 hours a week. Being a athlete isn't easy but surfing is also not the most challenging compared to other sports fitness wise. Most of their issues would be pure luxury for a lot of people
