The Waymo might think the truck is not parked since the truck shows up in white on the screen. At 16:26, it changes to a darker color which also coincides with a “back on your way” message. Then 16:59 the blue trajectory history disappears which usually happens when Waymo switches to a different planning mode (for example multipoint turn nominal driving). 17:48 the trajectory changes again. Some of those must be related to remote assistance interventions imo.

I wonder why the car had such trouble going around the parked truck when it usually goes around parked vehicles with ease. Maybe the size of it and the fact that it was in the turn lane so close to the scheduled turn. The driver of the truck seemed really bothered by the Waymo; was it in his way or was he just getting upset about something that had nothing to do with him? Waiting 4 minutes seems long, but Waymo really has an elegant way of dealing with these hiccups, using Waymo support to get the car moving again. Maybe soon they can get the car moving in 2 minutes instead of 4 (although part of the time was waiting for traffic.)

Same, usually it's very quick about going around delivery trucks. I think the guy wanted to back up but I'm not sure

The Waymo got stuck around 13:00 in your video. At 15:25, it got unstuck with the route planner showing going around the large truck. It took until 17:40 to finally get moving again, but this was due to the heavy traffic and light cycles. My point is that it only took about 1.5 minutes for Waymo support to intervene and get the car unstuck, which is really fast in my opinion! Go Waymo!!

Good points Luke. But, when you say "Waymo support to intervene and get the car unstuck", note that, in this case, Waymo support ended up being just an additional response, since Jordan at Waymo support at 17:00 explained, "We have received a notification that your ride may have temporarily paused." and he went on to say things that showed he played no role is getting the Waymo around the truck. So Waymo support was actually lagging behind the Waymo computer, JJ, and even the other nearby drivers/passengers (those in the black SUV at 16:20, after JJ explained to them what was wrong). Jordan, at Waymo rider support, did converse with JJ about the situation, which is good, especially if the car not been able to resolve the problem. But let's credit the Waymo computer here. It actually resolved the problem on its own. I like the car's action, to contact Waymo support about the pause, but Waymo support actually didn't play a role in getting the Waymo past the truck. Waymo support just played a role in talking to JJ (even though he actually didn't need it) and in confirming the cause of the pause and gathering more info, which is good. So, I agree with you that it was impressive, but maybe even more impressive than you said, since all the most important steps were done by the Waymo computer: initial driving, stopping, signaling left, contacting support, going around the truck to the left, and completing the right turn.

@@carlw6247 Also good points, but I'm pretty sure the Waymo remote control/fleet response team actually unstuck the car. You can kinda tell when the hazards turn on and the screen starts showing new paths

@@carlw6247 as far as i know, the remote assistance operates separately from the customer service that talks to you in the car.

When Waymo got stuck, it initially had an opening in the adjacent lane, but it missed that opportunity. Later on with the very assertive passing of the bus, I wonder if that was human initiated. It seemed almost too bold for Waymo to do.

SF is crazy compared to Phoenix. Hope you didn’t break the bank with how expensive Waymo is there. ALSO have you ever thought about trying out Tesla’s FSD just as a comparison to Waymo since you’re probably the most knowledgable Waymo user out there. Would be interesting to see how different it feels. (No idea how you would get your hands on a tesla with that software so……. id)
