Wax stuck to glass: Trying to fix Lava Lamp with Dish Soap

Ғылым және технология

I bought another used lava lamp on a local online marketplace. This one was in much better condition than the last, but it had some wax stuck to the glass that refused to move. I tried to add some soap to the liquid in the lamp to get the wax off, which didn't affect the stuck wax at all, but substantially changed the flow of the lava. In the end, I just "blew" the stuck wax off with a pipette. Not the most elegant solution, but it worked out alright. On the plus side, I now have first-hand information on how lava lamps react to surfactant.

This is my first "real" video where I didn't include any music. I'm always conflicted about music, on the one hand I feel it makes the video feel a bit more "lively", but on the other hand it can easily get annoying. If you have any thoughts/preferences on this, I'd love to hear them.

i relate to "i probably should have tried that first" so much 😅 also, i think the columnar flow is kind of cooler than the juggling spheres.

Hey mang, wanted to let you know all you need to do is 'save' the original fluid in a separate (for the love of god make sure it's clean) clean container while the lamp is off and cool. Make up your water soapy concoction and dump it in the now empty lamp. Turn on lamp... you might get lucky and get some bubbles, however, this doesn't matter. Do exactly what you did in the video - play with the stuck wax with a dropper and some soap... once happy, let it all cool thoroughly - like at least 10 hours (and don't speed it up, for the love of god). Rinse with clean water and then add back your original solution slowly (for jostling water could cause it to become cloudy). Thanks for your content, mang. Lava lamping is a dying art with all the restrictions on chems in wax.

Oh I forgot to put the overall reason 'why' you'd do this... After a year the soap will shed impurities into the water which will cloud it - also, after the soap breaks down it might get stuck in coil thus rendering some sort of gross mold/slime stuff i don't know it's just really gross though and your wax is gonna need cleaning... which I did watch the channel's vid on doing that, very nice
