Thank you for taking the time to explain wave refraction in under 5 minutes, it helped me get a better understanding of the phenomenon!

Your videos are super engaging and helpful. I'm studying for a generalist teacher certification test. My English, math, and social studies are fine, but I'm rusty on the science. Thank you!

When the waves refract around an islet (as in 1:49) and meet on the other side, is that an example of clapotis?

Which course/program would this type information be part of ? In other words, where can I learn this in a University environment ? Thanks

You could take a Geology course or Earth Science. At the college I attend I'm doing a geology course called coastal process Geology 143.

Wouldn't the effect in 1:49 be diffraction instead of refraction?

I think that if that were only a gap in a long strip of land, then wave pattern on the other side would be diffraction.

it could be a bit of both.... why not? would be tricky to quantify as lots of approximations i imagine. Though the waves are already curved across the gap so refraction seems quite strong here.

The diffraction is easy to quantify. It will be wavelength divided by gap about 1/4 in radians gives (360/2 pi)/4 giving roughly 15 degrees of diffraction . Clearly the refraction is also relevant here giving more bending and evidenced by CHANGE of wavelength near the obstacles due to shallow water here.

No, he was describing wave refraction. It is the proper term for the bending of waves as they approach a shoreline.
