Wattle Fence "Revamp" First Attempt and Fail 😆 :: PLUS Update On My Mulch Plans for this Year!

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” -Emile Coue
Welcome! Today was a bit of a “day” for me! It was one of those days where the hours seemed to be slipping away and I’m not sure where they all went! I started my wattle fence revamp project, and stopped my wattle fence revamp project. Let’s regroup, and try again! 😆 Enjoy!

I garden in the rain all the time in Portland Or. Best time to plant. I definitely have my rain gear for gardening. I wear Muck Boots...the best. Keeps your feet warm and dry. I wear vinyl gloves underneath my garden gloves for warm hands. It all seems normal to me after gardening here for 28 years. We are having a colder than normal spring like last year. Enjoy and adapt...That is my motto. Best wishes Janey!

Hi Janey, I was talked into black mulch several yrs ago by a landscaper friend who thought the plants "popped" more because of the contrast. After seeing it initially I thought it was a nice look but a few weeks later changed my mind. Not only did every dried fallen leaf show, but it had the look of scorched earth, like the bark had been burned in a fire. After a couple of wildfire evacuations a few yrs ago I decided it had to go and replaced it with Redi-Gro Fir Bark Mulch, It has held up really well, even though the pieces are small/micro and still smells great when it rains.

I quit buying mulch in bags from the big box stores. I frequently found bits of wire, other trash and obviously shredded pieces of pallets. I now get it in bulk from tree trimmers (contracted to cut trees away from power lines) in my rural area in Texas. You may consider checking with a garden center or rock yard since you don’t have space for a huge load from tree trimmers. I love your garden!

I made a fence and used my limelight hydrangea branches after trimming for the season, those are think and strong and the smaller ones I used to weave. So far so good, a few did root and leaf out which was pretty funny.

I hear you Janey! Lol I'm a fair weather California gal, and while I'm grateful for the rain ☔️ it's completely throwing my productivity off in my garden and outdoor projects! Poor me 😂

Love the wattle fence look, and even looking to try a living fence with willow on our homestead. One thing that might help weave the branches is to soak them for a couple hours first, kind of like what they do for basket making maybe? Maybe if they're more flexible they won't strain the posts and will dry tighter to them?

No worries about the video... it's all real life especially as a gardener. Mother Nature has her ways and a sense of humor apparently! Regarding your mulch, we just refreshed ours. Last year we put down a lot of compost and mulch that we purchased, but I've since found that our local waste company offers FREE compost and mulch to county residents! It's such a welcome resource and all complimentary. I'm thinking those in your Master Gardeners class can tell you if your local waste company offers something similar with compost and mulch where you are. Now I might find some downside in time, maybe this isn't the best compost and mulch, maybe it isn't the hot mulch where spores, etc are burned off (for lack of a better term), but for now I'm looking at this as a good thing and I'm happily using it in our garden. I like the thought of reducing, reuse, recycle and so for me I couldn't be happier. I actually used compost as my mulch over a large new garden bed we put in last summer using the sheet mulching method, as I've heard that's a good option. I want to improve our soil and this is an easy, cost effective way I'm hoping to do this! Happy gardening my friend!

I don't mind gardening in the rain up here in BC. It feels great. I also think that you could use compost as mulch and then you get the dark color for your gardens. For the wattle fence you could use the plastic stakes that you can get at home depot from the garden center. Then you can have it for years. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Hi Janey. I'm worried about putting rebar in with kids running around. I think it might be a safety hazard. I love having someone who is Norcal 9b. I totally agree with you about the rain. And I agree that the icy wind is worse than the rain. I'm supposed to be in a small neighborhood garden tour in May.. I have such big plans but I feel I'm getting further and further behind. Thanks for being real.

Hi Janey 🌺put iron sticks for the tree sticks to protect him .Janey you can plant roses and petonia and snapdragon. ...in place of vegetables , the vegetables plant them in the big galvanized containers or wood containers and put them near the green house or the area were the tree was cutt down .The black mulch looks beautiful . Have anice and sunny day . 🌻🌺🌻

Thank you for teaching about the dark mulch. I was going to go with the black this year, but not anymore! I am a rainy, Oregonian gardener. It works out great to water the new plants. I love your waddle fence and will have to try it to keep the dog out of my flowers. Happy gardening!

Please consider using a form of compost to top dress your beds. Not only does it enrich the soil but there are no dies or toxic additives in it.

Last year when we added many bags of that mulch, we found bits of wire, metal plastic and such. I think we are going to use the better mulch but for now use it around all the plants and eventually get rid of the other stuff. We used the pathway mulch on our veggie garden last year and my husband said it was nice fancy mulch lol Thank you for sharing!!

Just a thought, Janey - have you given any thought to using 2- or 3-foot pieces of rebar as stakes for the waddle fence? They age to a nice, rusty patina and would certainly hold up for a long time. I don’t think they would show up that much, once the branches have been woven around them. I think the big box stores sell them in short lengths. Good luck, figuring it all out. I hope the wind has stopped for you right now - I don’t like it either! ☺️

Janey, after watching the video with Robbie, which was awesome, I looked for but could not find his mulch. I looked at HD and Lowes with no luck. Would love it if you or Robbie would share a link for it. I'd like to replace my vlack mulch as I live in Florida so not good in our heat, learning as we go, lol. Love your waddle fence. 😊

Great channel! If you go with metal stake "sails" (like rebar) , just be careful if someone falls they do not get impaled on it.

Hi Janey, where would I find the pathway mulch? I looked at home depot and lowes. They don't have it. Is there another name for it? I have black mulch in front yard flower bed. I would love to change that. My backyard is blank right now but I'm planning on creating new flower beds and I want to start using the pathway mulch. I want to do an edible landscaping since my vegetable and cut flower garden is not big enough. I want to use th right mulch. Thanks!

I find my black shredded hardwood mulch does a good job of amending our clay soil in the rainy south. Would love to hear more about best mulches for amending soil type - is it climate specific or is it a bad choice in any region?

Jim Putnam @horttube is located in Raleigh, North Carolina and recommends triple shred hardwood mulch that breaks down over time. I tried the black mulch once and it stained my garden gloves black. Definitely not something I wanted my pups to be walking in. 😊

10:55 I’ve never heard the name “pathway mulch”. You should be aware of what type of wood/bark you get. I use pine bark mulch which stays brown as it ages (cedar turns grey). It’s shredded and breaks down by the end of the season and needs to be replenished every spring - about 3” deep. A lot of work but worth it. Pine and cedar is all that’s available around here from the forest industry. I am located near Niagara Falls, Canada - cold in winter and hot in summer but a much shorter growing season than you have.
