May Back Garden Tour! :: Supertunias and Superbenas are Looking Amazing!

Welcome Gardeners! Join me today for my May Back Garden Tour! The garden is in its peak and everything is growing in nicely. One of the things I love most about these garden tours is it gives me the opportunity to think out loud about the progress of my garden. It really does help me decide where I’m going to go next so thank you all for giving me the opportunity to do that! 😆 Enjoy!

slugs: crush egg shells to about a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch size, make uninterrupted ring of the eggshells around the base of the plants. This works because the shells can cut the slug's outer skin.

Janey! When you Grimm those sweet potato vines, pop the ends of the cuttings in soil or in a jar of water. If you put them in water, the very next day you will see that they have already pushed roots!!! Magical!

There is feed catchers that attach to the feeders that catch the extra feed that they drop. I just switched to only sunflower seed for my feeders. Also if u put a bunch of pavers together with containers on the pavers under the feeders the pavers could keep the seeds from seeding in the dirt and the small birds will clean up the feed. I have mind over jade containers and driveway and the birds do a great job cleaning the feed on the cement with any feed I give the birds

That’s funny with the dog! We are building a side garden with a gate to keep the dogs out because the first year I planted squash, our dogs were digging up the plants and eating the roots, 😂. They would be eating the blueberries and strawberries too. Also, the bougainvillea grows really well in the desert of AZ. They less water they get, the more massive the blooms are. You can probably do without any water on the bougainvillea at all. Maybe you can put trays under your pots to catch the water runoff. Your yard is so gorgeous❤❤❤ I really love how your shade corner is now💕

Quick fyi, if you’re growing tomatoes like that where they’ve got lots of space, you don’t actually need to prune suckers-it’s more for close gardening and to help air flow and an easier way to support their plants that people prune suckers (you’ll actually get more fruit per plant if you leave more of the suckers) Love the backyard progression! Really interesting about the apricot color from a distance

You have grown so much as a gardener and it is such a pleasure to watch you continue to grow between giving garden tours, speaking in front of large groups, live planting presentations, being part of “the garden tour” and now designing gardens for people…its just amazing to watch!!! Sending lots of love. Keep on growing!!! 💚🌸🌻🌿🌺. Oh and for the corner where your bench is…maybe adding layers with a few tall plants (fence height) in the back might bring it together and feel more cohesive with the rest of your beautiful garden. Maybe more cozy too. Enjoy your day Janey!

Just a thought, if you remove those pots beneath the bougainvillea and replace with maybe boulders and other size rocks, or maybe other dry/full sun plants like cactus etc you’d still have interest there, and not the water issues. And you can put the pots near the bench along the fence for some more interest. Also, with the foxglove, and you’ll find this the more you mature as a gardener, you need other colors to set that color off. So if you surrounded it with a lorapetalum and hakonechloa, or planted a smokebush behind the bench, they would really stand out. Think about the colors on a color wheel. ;) It is looking great, keep up the good work!

Oh Wow Janey! All I can say is I your magnificent garden. It is filled with so many gorgeous plant varieties at different stages of maturity, making your garden very interesting and pleasing to to the eye. You have a knack of floral colour blending without ever becoming too rigid in your choice of colour, texture, shape and size of your plants. You have a wonderful imagination Janey that has lead you to compose an exquisite garden, and you are not afraid to give something a go! Having lots of differing plant varieties is a great idea. Not only does it make it interesting to walk around and view, but it is also environmentally friendly to native animals.🦉🦎Did you know that plant variety also makes your garden less appealing to pests and disease? They have trouble locating the plant that they want; yes, it is quite confusing for them. I am sure that the birds, butterflies, 🦋ladybirds 🐞and especially bees, 🐝all look forward to coming to your garden every day. 🌻🥀🌳They must feel safe as there are so many resting and hiding places for them. Oh yes, I love your cute dog, Stanley. We don't see him much anymore. I miss him, but love seeing your rabbits🐇

For the bird seed I would recommend getting seed only for the birds you want to attract. For instance, only safflower seed for cardinals and house finches. I don't use black sunflower seeds because birds need to crack the shell and then there is shell mess on the ground below the feeders. Sunflower kernels (already shelled) work nicely. I feed lots of birds and I wonder where you get your seed to have it sprout? Big box stores sell combination bird seed that has a lot of filler in it that is a waste. I'm not sure the type of birds you want to attract, but a local bird store like Wild Birds Unlimited can help. Good luck! 😊

Very interesting tour of your backyard. The one plant I wanted a report on the progress , the large leaf Vining plant was skipped, was there a reason for that? I love idea of a QandA . I’d like more information on how to trellis the vines on the fence.

I was having the same issues with our bird feeders. I switched to a bird feed labeled "no mess patio mix", it's meant not to sprout - i think it has peanuts and shelled sunflowers? We got it from a local nursery, I think they sell it at pet supply shops too. We've also noticed a lot of different birds since we switched.

What kind of peony did you have planted next to your apricot foxgloves? Looks like it has seed pods forming! I would love to try growing them, I know they take years but it’s cool that they don’t always bloom true to their parent plant so you don’t know what the blooms may look like 😊 you should try to grow them! Scarify them put them in vermiculite until you see roots form then place container in fridge until you see first leaves and then pot the babies up! And see what you get in a few years, their foliage is pretty too even without blooms❤

What is the blue flowered plant under the Texas privet trio of planters? It looks like morning glory but I am not sure. It looks gorgeous.

Yes,use the black oil sunflower seeds! Very rarely do they sprout, and then it’s a sunflower. Easy to pull if you want to. Try nyger seeds very small and they don’t sprout. My problem in So Cal is squirrels!!! They fly from the fence, then they are swinging from the feeder. Make me crazy! I love watching the birds. But between the squirrels and feral cats hunting the birds I’ve given up for now.

I agree…. I like it best when you hold the camera. It seems more one on one, a little more personal.❤

I had the same thing and use suet feeders instead. Then just use the feed they want. Black seed.
