I disagree. I grew up with the book, and I didn't see the 1978 film until years later, and although I love it to this day, I don't think it captures the tone of the book very well. The 2018 version was perfect in this regard, in my opinion. Though it could have done with a higher budget, some of those fight scenes just look like garbage ...

Watership Down is a good object to use in order to research the subject of adaptation and re-adaptation. What we have here is three different interpretations of the same source material, each in a different medium and with a different target audience in mind, which significantly affects the characterization. 1978 movie: The most balanced and close in terms of story and character to the book, and as the first adaptation, is also the one most people think about when Watership Down is brought up. As a movie, it has a three-act structure, with the right balance of character-driven actions and plot-driven focus. It is also quite unique as a traditionally animated movie; few movies like it at the time it came it was so serious and gory, and to this day it has a strong effect to anyone who views it. It's kind of a disillusioning experience for anyone who thinks that cartoon movies are strictly for kids. Also, the song Bright Eyes, who was a hit the year it came, continues to give it even more of a unique identity. 1999-2001 TV series: A looser and more child-friendly version of the story. While it covers the major events of the book, the larger format of a three-season long series does invite it to take a few filler-esque detours. Also because it's meant for a younger audience, the darker and more political aspects of the book are downplayed, simplified or removed. It also removes a lot of mentions to the lapine language and the mythology of the rabbits, such as changing Hyzenthlay's name to Primrose and so on. With that said, because of the wider format we do get to know each of the main characters more, making the show mainly character-driven. While it is largely its own thing, it does pay tribute to the 1978 film, with main stars John Hurt as Woundwort and Richard Briers as Captain Broom and the intro being a cover of Bright Eyes. 2018 miniseries: While it sticks fairly close to the story of the book, it does a few things differently, both good and bad, to give us something new. The visual style, the tone and atmosphere, and the voice cast do deliver a serious and suspenseful tone that feels in tune with the source material. However, it adds several changes that don't really feel necessary and quite honestly goes against the appeal and likability of the main characters on several occasions, which also deals a heavy blow to their character development. Bigwig is too angry and aggressive, Hazel doubts himself too much to feel like a leader the other rabbits would actually follow and Keehar is just a pain in the ass as opposed to an eccentric ally.

1978 film - Watched it at a young age and enjoyed it despite the violence and nightmarish scenes. 1999 TV series - Watched it back when it first aired (only had 5 channels to work with). Recently rewatched all 3 series and enjoyed it. While it does deviate from the book and film, its a welcome enough change as well as the length of the series that helps better show the characters personalities as well as backgrounds compared to the film. 2018 Miniseries - Had a hard time knowing which rabbit was who (except for Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Woundwort, Clover and such), as they looked quite similar to each other, so struggled to connect with them and making me go: "Which rabbit is that?" As for the whole miniseries in general, it was hit and miss for me.

Looking at these side by side, what really stands out to me is how much more expressive Fiver is in the '78 film. He gets panicked, he gets angry, etc. The 2018 Fiver mostly seemed quiet and timid.

Cosmic Soul I’ve read the book and watched the first episode of the 2018 version and there a lot that has changed. Some of them upset me, like not including a lot of rabbits that were the OG’s, changing Strawberry to a girl, and having Clover find Hazel instead of Fiver. Also making Bluebell come at the beginning instead with caption Holly ticked me off a tad, because they took characteristics away from Dandelion and gave them to Bluebell. Otherwise I can say I did like the newest version

  • @knightatyourservice7512

@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I want to talk about the gender-swaping of strawberry. In the movie, that wouldn't had sense because the rabbits thinks only about the reproduction. With is acurate with how animals would see the opposite gender. But in the mini-series, the rabbits are more anthropomorphize. Fiver (I think) said that they needs families in order for them to have a motivation to live. They have monogamy They can't make babies with the same female. As we have seen, male rabbits can get emotionaly attached by female rabbits, so it wouldn't have sense for them to share the same female. And we have seen what happend after a doe comes in the group. Two of the male rabbits fought for that female. And that's a common think for animals. Now think what if just Strawberry remains the only female: all of the rabbits would have fight for her until perhaps Bigwig remains the only male.

I absolutely loved the 2018 series!!! I wish it wasn’t getting treated so badly 😢 I think it’s because people keep calling it a remake. It’s not a remake, it’s an adaptation to the book. Even someone at BBC said so. Usually remakes get a lot of hate because they ruin the original, so that could be why it’s getting hated, which is extremely sad. It’s getting hated for no reason then!! It just deserves so much more love, it’s so beautiful and it’s a must watch!!! What an underrated masterpiece.

Thanks for doing this; I found it really interesting. WD is my favourite book of all time, so the original novel will always be top of my list. As for the screen adaptations: I do like the 1978 film quite a lot, despite some pacing issues and some of the changes it makes (Blackavar!) and though you can't hear it here I think Angela Morley's score is a masterpiece -- better than "Bright Eyes" if you ask me! It has a _wonderful_ voice cast, too. Richard Adams didn't much like the way Fiver was portrayed, but I loved how Richard Briers voiced him. This version is also the best at reflecting the fact that the book is set in a specific, real part of the English countryside. It's a slight shame that so many people see this without having read the book, as I think having the background helps, but still. The 1999-2001 series I took a _long_ time to warm to at all. When it first came out I watched the first few episodes, then decided I hated it and refused to have anything much to do with it for a while. A friend who liked it a lot more (and still does) gradually helped me change my views a bit and I did eventually end up watching all three series. It's still probably my least favourite thanks to how far it goes from the original in many later episodes -- and I find it annoying that S3 (which is otherwise nicely darker than S1/S2) features that damn mouse and her ridiculous magic. I've seen the 2018 version twice. The first time through, I was constantly looking for changes from the book, and of course there are lots (especially where Clover is concerned). Second time round, I relaxed and treated it as a film "inspired by" the book, and I liked it considerably more. Yes, there are still things I dislike (notably Hazel *telling* Bigwig what to say when he fights Woundwort) and I'm irritated that it shares the modern obsession with setting scenes in the dark so much. But the CGI has grown on me, and for the most part I don't mind it. Kehaar's flying scenes are still a bit ropey, though!

One of my all time favorite stories. Of course, I love the 1978 film, easily among my favorite films. Might sound weird, but I honestly also really love the 1999-2001 series. Like yeah parts of it are toned down a bit, but beyond the bright color scheme and lack of onscreen violence, there is actually a lot of good character development & interactions, and good food for thought for a kid’s show. It actually retains a lot of the book’s lore & continuity (they frequently tell stories about figures of rabbit lore like el-Ahrairah and Prince Rainbow). And for a kid watching, it would not only be a nice introduction to a great work of literature & gateway to the film, but it’s themes & conflicts could be the right kind of challenging. Oddly enough, the adaptation I like least is the 2018 one. I don’t hate it- I just don’t feel like it added much that the other adaptations didn’t already offer. The dark tone, I felt, was handled better in the 78 film, and the further exploration of characters and backstory was better explored in the 99 series. I am grateful that it’s gotten people talking about WSD again, though, and there are some neat things in it, like I thought the voice actor for Woundwort did a real good job, and I’m a sucker for ANY version of sweet lil Fiver

Those that watched and enjoyed the 2018 version (having this as their first watership down experience) and never read the book or watch the 1978 version leading to unbiased positive opinion. Those that watched the 1978 version in their childhood (old AF) and have the rose tinted nostalgia goggles super glued to there face hating any part of a different adaptation that changes how they remember it from their childhood. Those that read the Watership Down novel first and hated all the animated adaptations that deviated from the original source. Though to be fair the source novels of any series are always better than there adaptations.

I saw the 1978 version from a very young age and it impacted me so much back then because I love animals and their whole world and characters were just perfection to me. I didnt read the novel until 13 and I regret not being able to read it earlier as I loved it so much and it just gave me a deeper understanding of the world and respect for the film. I only watched the TV show once or twice, it didnt live up to the book or film but it was harmless, and being young I thought it was okay at best. Didnt like Blackberry being female and I prefered the film's semi-realistic but beautiful animation and backgrounds. I watched the first two episodes of the 2018 version and I didnt like it. The changes they made were unnecessary or confusing and it just failed IMO. I understand they had no budget and its not going to be Disney level of animation but I just couldnt feel connected to it. For something that could do more development in terms of story and characters as they have more runtime than the 1978 and yet they focus on all the wrong parts, its sad. I wish it was better, but I knew in this day and age it wouldnt hold up. I will stick with the novel and film thank you, but the BBC get a clap for trying.

Brendan Gallagher I’m a big fan of the book, still currently reading it too. I never saw the one before the Netflix version, so no opinion on that one. I’ve seen lots of the old movie, just never the whole thing. I saw one episode of the 2018 one and there was a loooot wrong, still entertaining though. Edit: finished the Netflix adaption, and honestly I liked it. There’s a lot that’s incorrect and I’m sad they left out some of my favorite characters (Pipkin). I was also really disappointed that they really skipped over and kinda brushed aside Cowslip’s warren. I loved that part in the book and I always sad to see that it only lasted around 7-10 minutes really. They could’ve made that much better. However, all in all I do recommend watching it, but I’d highly suggest reading the book first!

It's hilarious how both of the cartoons had ample time to be something good but the movie just under 2 hours still manages to be the best. -In the original nothing was held back from the audience, the scenes were drawn beautifully, animation flowed well at times (the rabbits running animation), music was phenomenal, and major characters were developed even with the limited runtime. -In the cartoon it seems more childish and toned down, everything is more colorful (the backgrounds look good too), and the rabbits look less like real ones and more like a Disney type style. Truthfully I haven't watched this series so I can't say much about character development. -In the BBC adaptation the palette is so dark and monochromatic every scene the characters are in it's either brown or gray, like literally watching this video I could barely tell what was going on, the brightness of the movie and cartoon kept my attention. some characters motivations and actions were swapped and given to minor characters, the cgi was absolute crap, like the textures were ok but the characters movements were so robotic and unnatural, putting aside the fact the character look less like rabbits and more like hares.

Well, what can I say? 1978: I completely agree, the original is the coolest because of the characters and atmosphere. I read the book just recently, and the '78 movie conveyed the book. 1999-2001: I did not watch the cartoon series, only individual episodes found on the Internet. I didn’t like the drawing of the characters; when I saw Drummer, it seemed to me that in front of me was a lion with long ears. Everything is too childish. 2018: Why do people criticize the miniseries??? Better say thank you for the new film adaptation. Yes, Bigwig is too angry and Hazel is doubting herself. But this is a new attempt to film a great book. And I liked this attempt. P.S. The romance in the series was not superfluous.

So dark and mostly on point accourding to the book 1999-2001: Cartoonish, less violent, child-friendly but the characters and story was interesting due to the character developments throughout the whole seasons 2018: It's because i've watched the original version and the series version, i didn't found the 3D version in 2018 much appealing. I will give a quick opinion of each one in my order from my favorite and less favorite: 2018: Yes, visually it could have looked better. A nice adaptation, with some changes, some for good and some for bad. However it manages to shape the story very well and things like Hyzenthlay's relationship with Holly were very good. But i don't forgive the removal of the boi Pipkin . 1999: Very childish an very much on his own. Woundword went from being a somewhat tragic character to just the villain thay our heroes must defeat, and oh man, what a disappointment his defeat. Weed-Rabbit-guy summons the reaper, (Yes, here are a LOT of magic things like this) because yes, Inle couldn't do his job withouth being summoned (¿¿¿¿????) And bam! All solved, fuck the message and the tension of the battle in the book :D. Anyway, it's worth giving it a chance, at least the characters have each one a lot of personality. 1978: Haha, rabbits dying, how disturbing, so scary!. I felt it was boring and it goes so fast, but visually it's terryfingly cool and the beggining part art style was my favorite.

Out of the three film adaptions, I liked the 2018 one the best, the original film coming in second place, and the 1999-2001 just appeared - to me, anyway, perhaps not to you and that's fine - like a bunch of childish, amateur bull (I guess I'm just not into that kinda kid-friendly stuff, sorry.) Although I assume the reason I enjoyed 2018's adaption so much was that I was one of those people who saw that one first. I had both the first book and Tales laying around, but I didn't really feel so motivated to read them, until I had seen the 2018 series. Now I'm reading the books though, and personally I think it's silly to pluck feathers over these films when there's a perfectly good book to read.

I was a little disappointed in some of the plot changes because they removed some of my favorite parts of the book, but I will say this in defense of the 2018 series: I think it was actually no less violent than the book. The only thing I can think of where it deviated from the violence of the book is that the film didn't focus as much on the imagery that the book describes when Bigwig is caught in the snare. However, if you're watching it with the knowledge of what happens in the book, you know in your head what's going on without it having to zoom in on Bigwig's neck. It's not like they removed that stuff from the scene, it's just not as apparent because they use a long shot instead of a close-up.

  • @fermintenava5911

@@jadezdemon6665 It doesn't change the storyline that much. In this movie, they made the point that one female alone wasn't enough and would lead to discord and heavy fights, so they want to the farm to get more. In the book, they made the same point after they got Clover - that was the reason why they still felt the need to go to Efrafa. Even with these two, they'd have to go for more does anyway - otherwise they'd have to deal with massive incest. But they helped themselves by letting Clover get captured, so the mission in Efrafa had even more urgency. That's a change in the storyline, but it's still good screenwriting.

Enjoyed all 3, and honestly love them all! But if I had to rank em... 1) the 1999 series. The characters are fleshed out here and I can easily tell who's who. They made alot of changes, but honestly I liked the changes (such as blackberry being a girl so champion has a love interest) season 2 was pointless though, and almost completely skippable. My favorite version, though it didn't win by to much. 2) the miniseries. I have trouble telling some of the characters apart, (blue bell holly, hawkbit and dandelion all look the same. As well as EVERY efrafan comander ) But it still comes second as at least I can tell half of them apart. They did a good job with keeping the tension in action scenes, although it could've used some more calm scenes. Kehar is an asshole, which bugs me. Tge hazel x clover thing is stupid... i prefer hazel x primrose like from the series. And i want more campion. It exceeded my expectations though, and isn't nearly as bad as I expected. It's actually quite good. 3) the original 1978 movie. I cannot tell who anyone is except bigwig, woundwort and fiver. Everyone else is just "the brown one" or "the other brown one" and this is honestly the main reason I dislike it. I like that it has fire, as it keeps it realistic, and I've always loved how watership down feels so real. The animation works perfectly for the story and atmosphere (even though the rabbits designs dont). Bright eyes is still my jam. It's been awhile since I watched this, because I honestly can't get past the awful character design. I'm a character designer myself, so it just bothers me I guess... pretty much everything else works great though! I'd actually love to see this one reanimated (IN 2D!!!)

Is Watership Down 2018 No Blood?

Book was the best. The 1999 cartoon introduced me to it and I loved it as a kid. 1978 was great, but a little too gory compared to source material. 2018 made terrible changes which lead no nowhere and turned Adams' story into trivial Hollywood-like... thing.

@@Unifoseum Umm, I don't mind blood itself, my problem was that this level of goriness wasn't faithful to the original book.

@@Phea7 What I find interesting is Martin Rosen, who directed the original movie, helped produce the '99 series, which had some big changes too.

There's more than 2??? Good I feel old now lmao Also at the beginning of the video, the bunnies eating the grass in the first panel legit look like a bunch of Plushtraps xd (Unless it's just my phone being a bit blurry again)
