Waterproofing a Plywood Roof Deck or Balcony with Liquid Rubber Deck Coating!

This Liquid Rubber Deck Coating is FANTASTIC, guys! It's easy to apply to Plywood Decks or Balcony's, looks and feels good, and it's very durable.
Hi guys! This video is a step by step look at using Liquid Rubber Deck Coating to waterproof the plywood deck or balcony over the play house I'm building. After applying 5 gallons of the liquid rubber (about 5 coats on this 75 sq foot area), the surface looks great and feels like soft linoleum under bare feet. And, it seems just as durable as linoleum.
I found Liquid Rubber Deck Coating after 2 days of research and reading product reviews. I have in no way been supplied material or paid for use of this product. If I ever decide that this product isn't working or holding up to normal wear and tear, I'll post the details here.

    I noticed that on the video that Liquid Rubber has produced, they lay the Geo-Textile tape down during the Primer application. That would probably avoid the extra heavy coating you had initially of the Poly that took so long to dry. It may also help saturate the tape and have it lay right onto the wood, since the primer is much thinner.

    Great Video! My wife and I are looking at doing this to a small balcony. Thank you for all the links! In the beginning it looked like the product color was grey. On the final closeup it appeared white. Did that really happen or is it just the lighting? Also, how slippery is the deck after it rains? -Rick

    Thanks, Rick!! It’s definitely just the lighting. The color doesn’t really change as it dries. It’s a medium grey. The deck is surprisingly not slippery. It feels like linoleum so if it was really wet and you had slippy shoes on, you might slip. But, I wouldn’t say it’s any more slippery than a wet wood deck. But, just in case, they make a textured version of this too. 😁

    Is it slippery when wet? I have an apt with a 150 sqft balcony/patio area sitting above the carport. I had new OSB subfloor, waterproof paper, durock and tile laid down a couple of years ago. With the recent TX rain, it keeps getting wet; water sips through grout lines and has now rotten about 2' x 3' section of subfloor. As a result, the enclosed carport gets tons of water. Wondering if I could use this on top of existing tiles, after repairing the rotten out area of course.

    You can call the Liquid Rubber help line about using it over tile. I think you can, but definitely double check. I wouldn't call it slippery but water can make anything a little more risky. BUT, they have a textured version that's even more slip-resistant.👍

    cool. thanks for the idea. it's basically an elastomeric sealant with a poly cloth to make the sealant stronger, and the primer helps the top coating to stick to the surface. This is the same procedure for roofing, so if you don't want to use the liquid rubber brand you can use something similar at your local hardware store. Use the primer especially on new wood, so that the wood soaks up the liquid, otherwise if you skip the primer, you will end up using more product to coat the surface, and over time the product will end up peeling off due to the intense sun. If you only use 1-2 coats with a brush, when it dries it will be a really thin layer of rubber on top of the surface. Elastomeric and Rubber surface coatings can get really expensive if you have a lot of surface to cover. And, it doesn't last forever. Since global warming has increased the sun beating down on surfaces, we've notice that the material is not as trustworthy. might be a better option to use a pond liner on top, for areas that pool and is exposed to a lot of sun, if you really want to weatherproof it, if using plywood or OSB

  • @AbbottsAtHome

    @AbbottsAtHome

    3 жыл бұрын

    Luckily, I planned ahead and sloped that roof. I never have any pooling. And, my surface is shaded all day. So, I can’t verify it’s durability in full sun. But, what I really like about this product is that it’s highly recommended, looks great so no need to cover it, feels great under bare feet, has held up under all of the heat and rain we get in the south, and it comes in lots of colors. It was really easy to apply too! A friend even used it to make the floor of her camper watertight. 👍

    What if you have a tar balcony? We have tar balcony and there is some type of waterproofing membrane that looks similar to what they use on roofs. The thing is the surface is not level, so water ends up sitting there. As a result pockets started creating on the waterproof membrane and eventually break through the tar in between cracks.

    @@factionGM sorry, I’ve never worked on a tar roof. I remember watching my Dad and Grandpa pour a new tar layer on a roof as a kid. Hi! Mine still looks like new 2 years later. But, I live in Houston Texas. So, not much experience with cold weather. But, it’s great in CRAZY heat. 😅

    We installed the same product two years ago in Alberta, Canada on a direct south facing deck. The temps get at hot as 38C/100F in the summer and as cold as -30C/-22F in the winter and it's held up great! We installed over older Duradek and saved approx $4,000 doing this ourselves.

    I live in Houston. So, we never get snow. And, only drop below freezing a few days a year. Here's a 2-years later update on this deck you might like: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m31nt8-HYpC3lZM.html

    I priced an aluminum waterproof decking system for a 40 sq ft entrance porch for my son's house. Extremely expe nsive. I'm skeptical this would hold up to the constant foot traffic of a main entrance. Maybe with an outdoor carpet on top.

    Good question. I’m not sure how long this would hold up to front entrance foot traffic. It is very durable. But, it probably requires maintenance (a fresh layer) from time to time. I’d definitely get the textured liquid rubber for a main entrance deck. Good luck!!
