One helpful tool is the Caran d' ache pallette-a flat plastic which is textured on one side so you can scrub the pencil on it then add water or mix colors. While I love the control of the watercolor pencils, sometimes it seems silly to add the extra steps to directly painting from my regular pallette. 🤪 Love your little brush-have been looking for a small detail round. Thank you for the video-your style is really nice.

Thank you very much for your lessons. You taught me a lot)). I would like to suggest a new topic, if you will. Portrait of a hippopotamus. It may not be a very popular model, but from a technical point of view it can be very interesting. Thick skin in places shiny, in places covered with coarse hairs, a beautiful combination of gray and pink, folds of the lower lip when the mouth is closed.

People seem to be completely missing the point of watercolour pencils as a separate medium in their own right. If you want it to look like watercolour paint, just use watercolour paint! The pencils suit those who WANT to create texture and combine washes with visible pencil strokes. To see them used to their best advantage, check out artists who do actually like them and use them regularly, eg: Alissa Duke or Wendy Jelbert. Appreciate Louise for having a go though, I know it was a request!

I have a large number of watercolour pencils and have kept the shavings when sharpening the pencils, (keeping the wood shavings out), I've then used the shaving by adding water. This works well and I feel I don't waste my colours :D

Thanks for this, Louise. Beautiful subject. I have all the Faber Castell and Caran D'Ache watercolour pencils, as well as their non-watercolour pencils - Polychromos and Luminance. While pencils don't seem to achieve the magic of watercolour paint, I find that they are quite therapeutic to use at times because they are less frustrating and more controllable when I am already stressed out over everything else going on right now. 😄

I have a small set of the faber castell Alburct Durer watercolor pencils, and they activate completely leaving no lines. I only use them for details in my watercolors, but I have played with them. I was under the impression that derwent and Caran Dache would activate as nicely as the Faber castell. but it doesn't seem to be the case. Though I have heard the FC are the best of the three.

Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle and Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer are widely considered the best watercolor pencils. The former consist entirely of lightfast colors.

Interesting. I can tell you prefer watercolor, as two of the techniques are essentially using the pencil as if it was a pan of paint. Love the nice soft edges of the merged colors.

Beautiful work - lovely to see you using the pencils, I don't use often but when I do I like to deposit colour on a piece of paper as you did - and make a little 'palette'. I was surprised to notice the hot press had quite a texture to it. *Caran D'Ache, where I am, are considered to be the ultimate WC pencils, but think it's a matter of choice: you pronounced it* exactly right by the way ;-) Thanks for your time taken for us. Have the best of Christmases with your new grandson and family! Stay safe.

Thanks so much Louise I also use water colour pencils now and then but I cant seem to get away from my acrylics. I did start to use watercolour paints and mean to pick it up again in the new year. Thanks for the great tips. You mentioned recently in another video that painting was your life and you couldnt wait to get to it every day. That really resonated with me. As I am on disability pension I dont go to work. After finishing ny breakfast I cant wait to get to my study and start painting and I will probably still be here until tea time...then back at it after. Thanks for the inspiration throughout the year. I wish you a very merry Christmas and a safe happy healthy New Year.🥰🎅..hope you get into your new studio asap...come on hubby grab your coffee and get back to it🤭...dont forget to do a video tour once its all done Louise🥰🎅💜🎨 cheers from WA

Thank you I sometimes like to play with water color pencils and use wet brush on pencil to pick up pigment. I find it kind of hard to layer the colors because once painted it makes the paper so soft that it tears. Also I have used a light color such as yellow to draw my sketch before painting. And avoid having graphite pencil marks that can sometimes be hard to erase. I wish you a very happy Christmas. And may your new year bring us all much joy and loads of fabulous painting tutorials.

If you don't want the texture marks from watercolour pencils, you need to use a slightly stiffer brush for blending. I use a taklon bristled brush with watercolour pencils and keep my watercolour brushes for my paints. I love both media and often use them together too.

Oh how beautiful! Both versions are stunning! I recently did a Bird of Paradise with PanPastels, amazing vibrant color! May I offer a bit of advice I learned recently. Colored pencils should never get wet beyond the very tip. When water seeps into the wooden barrel the pigment is weakened and compromises the strength when you go to sharpen it causing more breakage. I've seen a KZreadr artist dip the entire end into the water! I yelled "Nooooo!" at the TV! * _ * Hope you and yours have a very Happy Christmas and New Year!

Thank you, Louise. I enjoy your vudeos very much. I happened to be struggling with watercolor pencils myself when this video started. I'm using Faber Castell Albrecht Durer pencils and Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelles. In both brands, a haze appears after laydown. For some colors this phenomenon is immediate; for others it might take 15 or 20 minutes. The problem varies with the type of paper being used, but happens, to a lesser extent, even on Arches and Stonehenge hot press (100% cotton.) The haze turns into a sort of foggy slurry when I wet it and makes the wash streaky. I'm an experienced watercolorist so I don't think this is a matter of brush technique Have you ever encountered this difficulty? Thanks in advance for any insights you might have.
