Fyj: the albrecht Dürer pencils are waterproof when you blend them with water and let them dry. If you lay down another color and the color underneath is dry it won't blend again, only the new color will blend.

That's interesting, I knew inktense did that but hadn't realised the albrecht durer did it too.
I was so happy when I heard your opening comments about using wc pencils instead of just painting. I had exactly the same reaction - why bother? I find it tedious to draw/color first then have to play around with a brush and water to activate the color when I could just dip my brush in my paints and be done with it. Thanks for all your ideas about how to use wc pencils. My favorite way to use them is to outline something, then pull the color from the edges toward the center. This gives a nice shading effect that I cannot achieve with regular wc.
Thank you for demonstrating the different techniques. I only use a watercolour pencil in place of a normal graphite pencil for sketching (prior to normal watercolour painting). A pale grey, silvery shade works well as this 'disappears' under all shades of watercolour.

Thanks so much for the tip! I'm about as much of a beginner as it gets and had no clue that the grey color would disappear like you said. This is why i LOVE reading the comments..you learn so much! 😁👍

I love my watercolor pencils. I prefer the control that I have with them. Thanks for the tips. One thing to remember is not to get the wood wet at the tip as it softens and degrades the tip and causes the leads to break .

For me, watercolor pencils work when traveling especially on a cruise ship. I bring my paper or watercolor coloring book-for no stress coloring/painting fun. I keep several size and shape water brush pens filled and ready to go. I don’t have to worry about bringing my palette, good paint brushes and try to have a cup of water handy-which I always spill. I can work on a small project or, again, a watercolor coloring book-for no stress coloring/painting fun- whilst lying in a lounge chair on the beach or by the pool with a cocktail in one hand.

Another thing you can do is use a grater and grate little pieces of the watercolor pencil onto a wet piece of paper or wet painting for some cool effects. Works really well with woodless watercolor pencils.

Emma be careful with techniques that wet the pencil the moisture can be absorbed up the core causing it to lose structural integrity making them difficult to sharpen after a while
Thanks for this demo Emma. I use watercolour pencils in sepia and black mostly. I’m terrible at doing realistic branches with a brush, but if I hold a watercolour pencil loosely and kind of twirl it onto damp paper, I get fabulous spindly branches. I recently did a series of birch trees and they look so natural compared to what I can achieve with a brush. I also want to get a perylene green and sap green for leaves. I have a set of cheap watercolour pencils, but rarely use them because the colours are like you said, almost kid-like. So, individual colours are the way for me to go. I love Derwent watercolour pencils.

Thank-you Emma!!! I have terribly shaky hands and the water color pencil tutorial was the answer Ive been looking for. PLEASE do more!!!
You can also use A Caran D'ache Palette Aquarelle (117.103). It is smooth on one sided and rough on the other. The rough side works great with water color pencils.

Lol… I have had the 120 full set and it was given as a gift. I watercolor but not on Emma’s level. I can’t wait to watch the entire video!!
Bought this same set last week and had the same complaint about the greens. I came from alcohol ink and am relatively new to watercolor. After working with it a few months, I didn't feel like I was getting the hang of watercolor. These pencils changed my mind. I'm able to practice water control so much easier. Thank you so much for the tips on color mixing with these. That's a huge help!
Emma, thank for that! I enjoyed watching you go from 'tentative, uncertain' to 'absorbed and enjoying' as the video progressed. It was good to watch the honesty of that progress - it wasn't the all-too-common slick, highly-edited performance of so many You Tube art videos these days, and it's really encouraging for others to see that 'even professionals are still learning'. The way you did the petals of the second flower fascinated me as I've tended to work from the outside > in. Your technique works really well, and I will try that! I thought you looked tired, and wondered if that was why you were tripping over certain words. I hope I was wrong, and if not, that you are feeling a lot better now. :)
I love these demonstrations :) it has helped me a lot. I have a learning disability (comprehension) so it's nice to have a good example to watch and learn from.
This is the best watercolor pencil demonstration I've seen! So helpful! Thank you, Emma!

Great video. I haven’t used my watercolour pencils in ages. I was glad to see you discover the detailing “trick” of going back when dry to add the line details. Tip: if you like the detail but want it just a touch softer (and to set the paint) but not as much as a wet brush would do, experiment with a *very* light mist of water (like the tiny sprayers in cosmetics, preferably refillable). I used to just breathe on them but it was just small areas that needed it.
Really appreciate all the hard work you put into this video! So many great tips! I saw an artist that paints very loose and wild use them when painting wet into wet, she takes a little sand paper and sands them over a very wet spot to get texture.
wow! you are a great teacher
another great tutorial! I can see benefits in using the pencils in certain areas of painting projects…thank you Emma…you’re such a great teacher! You always explain what you are doing ie: wash off the brush….blend…mixing colors…its helpful to know the process you use to achieve the look you want.
Dear Emma Jane, I can't tell you how much I enjoy your lessons. I love it. Even more than the real watercolour lessons I do here in the neighbourhood. Please keep going on!
I like the color blob pallette. I would totally use that to make a super light and compact "travel palette" for backpacking/hiking.
Thank you SO much for doing this video! I have the Spectrum Noir pencils, and you showed me the correct way to use them! The pieces I colored/painted turned out beautifully! I used Stazon ink to stamp, and a waterbrush. They turned out amazing. THANK YOU! 💜
I use a Caran d’Ache scratch palette. It’s a plastic palette with rough surface to mix watercolor pencils on.
i love this. you make good use of the texture and lines. i hate it when people just use watercolor pencils as a "palette" but never directly on the paper (defeats the purpose of them being pecils in the first place.....), so this is refreshing.
Thank you. Fabulous tutorial.
Blick sells Albrecht Durer WC pencils open stock if you are interested. About 3 bucks each. Also, I find the Caran d'ache aquarelle pallette useful for mixing colors-it is textured on one side to grab the color so you can mix whatever smallish quantity and it doesn't soak in. Also at Blick for about $12. Jerrys, Cheap Joes, and probably Amazon also carry the pallette. In my experience, the Albrecht are the best for dissolving completely-some others don't.

Great tips! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And nice paintings (as usual). There are more possibilities to explore with water-soluble colored pencils too, like you can definitely use those for adding details over any watercolor paintings, especially because you can sharpen them nearly to a needle tip. (Oh… I just saw you’ve covered that 😊) Also, you can take off the pigments straight from their tips with a wet brush without running the risk of ruining your pencil, because their cores are protected by the wooden body. In this case, all you need to care is letting the pencil dry well in any place with good air circulation. Another thing you can do is to color over a slightly scratchy plastic surface and add water with a brush, that way you’ll have yourself something similar to a watercolor pallet. 😉 You can pick more of your favorites shades of green open stock and replace them to the ones you didn’t like or use as much. Let me know if you are interested, because I have the 120 Albrecht Durer set and I’d be glad to show you all of the green shades available for you to choose.
I'm a new subscriber and now a fan of your talent and teaching style.
Thanks for demonstrating --- it really helps inform my purchases
Oh my goodness! This is just what I’ve dreamed tutorial! You can’t just imagine how much I liked it!!! I’m going to review it over and over! Just loved it! Big hug! Merry Christmas!
I do think you have a great teaching style. I’ll admit that I was actual looking for a video on using these pencils with traditional oil or wax based pencils. A lot of colored pencil artists use watercolor pencils as an under painting or background to use with their oil or wax pencils. So, for this example, the colored pencil artist would already be more comfortable using watercolor pencils. I just subscribed to your channel since I also enjoy playing with traditional watercolor!
Another great video! Thank you! Like you, watercolor pencils are not my top fav, but I’m glad you mentioned how convenient they are for travel. I also use mine a lot in my bullet journal, because I often journal a few minutes here and there and on the go.
I have the same pencils and love them! Thank you for showing me how to layer and highlight!!!
I have had a tin of these exact pencils in the cupboard and have never used them! Like you I’ve always just wondered what the point was? I’ll have to get them out and give them a go! Loved your tips and tricks!

It is amazing what a talented hand can do with a simple water color pencil. That’s beautiful.
Very informative. Months ago I Ordered watercolor pencils. Not knowing what in the world I was doing, I just dipped the pencils into water and did some doodling. Now I see that was totally not the way to go. Thank you so much for these tips as always.
I’ve always wondered about how to use watercolor pencils. This demonstration was awesome. I’m new to watercolor painting, but think I will try pencils for my Christmas cards…using your examples! Thanks again Emma, enjoy watching you!!!❤️
My new brushes arrive today! I am so excited! Thank you for this video. I've been painting Christmas baubles and I can't keep a perfect circle. It's been driving me batty. You've inspired me to keep trying. I'll use my watercolor pencils. I've been doing the highlights backwards, so you've helped me so much. Hope you're feeling well. You look beautiful as always.

Watercolor pencils isn't one more step,it's an underratpr and highly versatile medium. It can provide the precision that watercolor lacks while still being watercolor!!! Only that by itself,is enough to put it in the essentials list, for watercolor painting. In the same time,It's as versatile as the user's imagination and creativity is! Because of it's nature,it can also correct a drawing or painting that didn't,come out as good as we expected! Means it can turn a fail...to success!! PS Faber Castell A. Durer are the best ones. Go for open stock to try them and then, keep adding the same way, the pencils you need, to create a way better set, than the sets they sell!!!
Great and helpful tutorial on a medium that seems to be a bit under-appreciated. Thanks! I find watercolor pencils useful to create smooth gradients and wash transitions. I feel there is more control, but that might be just me. I love your instructional videos on watercolor. Many thanks for sharing your skills and experience!
Thank you so much I appreciate your time sharing this I have yet to take time to work with my Artiza 72 set of watercolor pencils in these ways. I mostly use them as colored pencils with my Prisma regular color pencils and I just discovered I also have Prisma watercolor pencils! Huh Funny 😄 didn’t notice. Lol Generally not drawing or painting free hand on watercolor paper yet. I like using all these different pencils with so many colors in adult coloring books. But now looks like I have learned so much more to try. You are a wonderful teacher 😊👏
Thank you so much Emma, I really really enjoyed watching you take us through all these colours. Yes I’ve learnt a lot from you. Please stay safe and well too
I have always wanted to try the pencils so this was a great introduction … thank you Emma
THANK YOU for sharing and explaining the benefits and differences of Watercolour Pencils and traditional Watercolour Painting, I learnt so much. Thanks again. 🙏💞
I enjoyed watching this and happy I found out some new ways to use it. I am a watercolor artist and also tried using what you showed. Thanks.
Thank you for your demonstrations of techniques, you are an excellent teacher. I am new to watercolor pencils, so this is very helpful.
These are wonderful tips for using watercolor pencils. I love trying to use watercolors and find that the pencils give me a little more control! They are a great extra tool to have in the learning process!
I loved these techniques ...I have been looking for the use of these pencils ... a wonderful use being very fool of choices and colors giving the design a much better looking effect. Drawing, designing and painting have been some of my favorite art since I was little, it’s amazing how we can put out what we see or think about what is around us...a good thing to use in a diary 😉
An excellent tutorial that is very helpful! Thank you, Emma!!
Thank you Emma, as a beginner watercolor person I appreciate you showing this. I also use markers and stamps to do watercolor.
thank you. Helped a true beginner around the techniques . Wanted to learn to do simple flowers.
Many thanks Emma, this somehow makes it a lot easier to see what colours you’re using, when to use it and the quantity you’re adding for absolute beginners. Thanks

Yes, I thought the same. Seeing how she controls the brush close up makes a huge difference!
This is actually a great way to learn how to mix and make colours, to understand the amount of each colour to use as practice for watercolour paint mixing.
Wonderful tutorial on watercolor pencils! I learned so much from you. Can’t wait to get my pencils out and start drawing tomorrow. Thank you so very much for sharing your lovely talent with us! God bless you. 🌸🌸🌸
Thank you Emma. Mine hve been sitting in my drawer for gears. You've given me incentive!
Nice tips and tricks. You should try out hot-pressed paper. It is much better for watercolor pencils. The smooth surface is more suitable than the bumpy, textured surface of cold-pressed paper, which creates unpleasant "white spots" when the pencil rubs across the surface. On hot-pressed paper the colors blend much better and more evenly.
So helpful! Nice to see your experience! Thanks Emily. You make watercolor and art so much less intimidating.
Thank you! Great beginning techniques!
Excellent! I love this brand of watercolor pencils. I wish I could show you the picture I painted using them, same brand. It was a good way to start painting again after a long span where I did little painting when I had young children. I was used to oils. the pencils, I felt, gave me more control.
Thank you so much Emma. I had a set of watercolour pencils given to me, so far they have been sitting quietly in my supplies because I wasn't sure how to use them. Tku again for this tutorial, I will give them a go.🤗
Thank you Emma. You are a natural teacher. I would love to see more like this with some of your beautiful florals.
Wow Emma you are so talented!! 😍🤩 I am used to hesitate to play with watercolor pencils.. but not anymore! Thanks a lot, Emma! For showing me the techniques 😎👍 Looking forward to learning new things from you soon!!
Wonderful educational video on these pencils! I have these but have not used them as much since getting a pocket palette (whichI filledwithDanielSmithandlove). I took it with me on a recent trip along with a travel Escoda brush and a water brush. Your video is inspiring me to pull out my pencils again for some applications!
I have had some of the watercolor pencils for along time and didn’t know how to use them.. Your video has made me want to go get them and start seeing what I can do.. thanks!
Loved this video on the watercolor pencils..
Emma, this is a really nice tutorial. I bought a large set of these pencils last year and tried using them but didn't know all of the helpful tips, (like the ones you just provided) so I'm going to pull them out and start playing. The highlight information on the bulbs is very helpful. They look quite realistic. Thank you.

For someone being new with watercolor pencils, you sure did a wonderful job! Thanks so much.
These pencils are good for when you are traveling, hiking and on the go. You draw your picture just as you would with regular pencils, then after you get home you can blend with water. That way you just need to carry your pencils with you....easy peasy :)
The best video I've seen on watercolor pencils. Thank you!
Great tips!! Thank you so much for sharing!
I like them best to use dry over a dried watercolour painting, in particular when using darker coloured paper. They can add nice structure and highlights on the rough surface.

Wow Looks pretty
I love all of your tutorials... very helpful and the end result is so cute
Thank you for sharing these techniques!
Hi, liked this tutorial cause I just bought some of those and was kinda lost. Lot of complaining from you in beginning but better toward the end. I think you will begin using these happily from now on. The best use to me is the use of eliminating the drawing line from a pencil drawing ie: your snowman example.
Thank you! I particularly love your blurred trees.

Your using watercolor pencils (as a painter) helps me see how placing paint (or pencil) & then manipulating it w/water creates all kinds of different illusions. Sometimes Im a little intimidated when using watercolor( I don't know why), but w/pencil- I gues its more predictable at first...and then I'm not so hesitant to attempt it w/ paint. THANK YOU!!!

I have the Albrecht Dürer Magnus set and I own some regular Albrecht Dürers as well that I bought individually. They fully dissolve on paper, layer well, and remain vibrant even after drying. I have some issues with the colour palette though (no purple or pink in a 24 set...), some odd colour choices and also a relatively disappointing set of greens altogether. But I think Albrecht Dürers are still one of the best pencils out there. In my opinion its better to cherry pick colours open stock than investing in a full set. Its a large range, so theres plenty of options. I especially enjoy them for portraits, more than I like them for landscapes.
There's SOOOOO many comments IDK if you'll see this or if someone said it already but you can get any of the Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils at open stock at big art supply stores like Jerry's Artarama and Dick Blick's (perhaps a local store in Canada near you) so you can order whatever green they have that you like..hope that helps or at least hasn't been mentioned 300 times already :D Thanks for showing how great these are..i wish i could afford them! Thank you for all your hard work!
Fabulous tips and demonstration, I like watercolour paints and this has given a new life to using watercolour pencils when on the go 🎨💜 thank you x
Thank you so much you have helped me tremendously I will be trying it out soon thanks 😊
You have always been wonderful and amazing! Thank you for sharing ❣️
Thanks for this video I have bought some cheap ones, like a set of basics 8 colors from Aldi which is a supermarket from here in Germany and then I have fall in love with this watercolors woody they are called that are pretty expensive for my budget but I have get them an I seriously think that I will have them for the rest of my life because the pigment is so rich and they glide so easily on paper. I have learned a lot from your video and I can't wait to play with my watercolor pencils.
I’m so glad that I found you. I have subscribed. I’m trying to learn how to use water colored pencils and you were a big help in knowing what to buy. Thanks 😊
