Watercolor Black Cat Tutorial - Wet in Wet technique
Watercolor supplies
www.amazon.com/shop/mr.otterartstudio
This step by step tutorial makes painting cats simple, fun, and a great way to learn how to use the wet in wet technique in watercolor. Inspired by the artist, Endre Penovac, this is a great tutorial for beginners as well as intermediate painters. Try it a few different times to really understand how this technique works. You can use the technique for landscapes, hair, and to soften edges in a background. All you need are basic watercolor supplies:
Watercolors (Prang)
Watercolor Paper - amzn.to/2w51RL1
Watercolor paint brushes - amzn.to/2w51RL1
Paper Towel
Water
Pencil and eraser

Thank you Great tutorial, Not easy but fun to do...I did three cats, one turned into a shaggy dog.
Loved the idea of showing multiple versions. Generally, the artists show only their best work.
Sorry about the audio in the end! I didn’t cut any of it, and added it twice:(. It was late

We could hardly notice it :). It’s quite refreshing
I remind myself constantly " Let the paint do the work"....that's the joy of watercolor. Thanks! Very informative, upbeat video
Thank you for showing us your multiple tries. It's helpful to realize that even YOU do things you don't necessarily love at first. 😉 This video makes me want to pull out my paints! (What I'm actually going to do is go to work, but maybe watching this again after work will re-spark my initiative.) Thank you!
I love this and seeing you do different versions helps as well.
I might try this out now! Thanks for always sharing your art with us!!
Your watercolor cats are fantastic! I love that organic form from the watercolor flowing around. I agree, the first one is my favorite as well. Beautifully done!

I agree, this work is amazing. Painting cats is my favorite thing to do.
Wow! I'm really amazed by how well the Prang watercolors spread! Cool technique I will have to try since I have a black cat plus it's getting close to Halloween.
one of the best action vids ever. Showing it over and over is epic. Now I have less fear and more excitement to try..
I just love this black cat tutorial!!! And am deffinitely going to try to paint that way. Very soon. So thank you for sharing it! ❤
The black cat is adorable.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I will definitely be trying this!
"Oh man, this cat just got craay-zy." Hahaha love it!
I love the colours in this and it's time I mixed more colours instead of relying on what comes out of the tube. This looks like a fun way to experiment!
Wow! Had a beautiful tuxedo cat...will watch this again....then try to do this. She was such a part of my life. Thanks for the motivation.

Thank you very much for the wonderful demo. You are encouraging people to work with watercolor and let the water and color paint themselves. This is fun.

Fantastic. Keep those videos coming especially using that prang paint

я так рад это слышать!
The cat you are painting looks very such like a British Shorthair (originally introduced by the Romans to Britain after the conquest). Our cats are British Blues, which are really dark grey blending into silver. I can't tell you how much fun it's been trying out a few of your tutorials during the COVID-19 lockdown. Thanks you so much from London UK,
That is brilliant, many thanks 🇬🇧
💖 You are awesome! Love it!
Thank you 😊 interesting , I'm going to try this today !
This is a beautifully made video!
Boy! Didn't you make it look soooo easy! Wet on wet is a huge challenge for me. But I will try, try again. ( I love that you suggested 3 or 4 sketches to start!)
Excellent presentation thank you from Australia 🇦🇺

The best cat I ever had was named Dusterina, she was born with no tail and literally had 8 claws on each paw!!! We found her when she was a kitten in our garage
Lovely! Thank you.

Looks like fun. I'm going to have to try it. Would be cool with mixing your own black. As the paint diffused it would leave some slight color shift. Thanks.
Lovely
I want to try this but I’m afraid of messing it up, so thanks for showing all the extra tries. Gives me hope.

Is there a story behind your channel name?????? I been curious for a while now....
I did this. It was awesome! I did mix my own black so the mild color shift as the color diffused was really cool. Must work really fast though or loose the whoosh effect of the paint. No phone so no Instagram. Really wanted to thank you so much. 👍👍😘

Is there a preference on whether or not to do this on cold vs hot pressed paper? And is there a way to tell from the tube if my paints are meant to flow more or not? O: I couldn't get the paint to bloom as dramatically so I kind of had to nudge it along
Lovely! but black is the one colour I do not have in my palette! great to see how you managed to get shape of head against body, clever!

You can do this with any color, try it! Today I tried it with blue, and it looked like a space cat but I kind of liked it.

By this point you've either bought black, or learned other techniques; but for anyone else coming across this who was in the same boat: color mixing! If you take ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, for example, they combine into a neutral gray! I learned to use those for shadows instead of straight black, since black is so stark and can sometimes deaden a painting. But you can experiment with adding complementary colors together until you get one that's dark enough! It just requires a bit of research and experimentation so you don't just get mud.
I love the way you do this fluffy cat !! but when I try it doesn't get fluffy at all. What kind of paper do you use please ?
❤️👍👍👍
Great technique. Seems so easy, but difficult to have the right volumes to understand the head. Thanks
❤👍

They are on my channel, I have a watercolor animal playlist you may like. Mr Otter inspired this channel. I found a picture of two baby sea otters and taped it to one of my college notebooks, and it honestly brought me so much joy every time I saw it, so when we chose the name for this channel and my business, I remembered him. I also loved Welcome Back Mr Kotter......on Nick at Night when I was young

@@MrOtterArtStudio I used to watch Welcome Back Kotter too. It was the first time I saw John Travolta and I thought he was such a bozo back then. And the theme song by John Sabastian who was also the lead singer in The Lovin' Spoonful at one time. Thank you for the answer to my question and all those memories.
I tried using black and water to make highlights and shadows on a black horse (more water=lighter area) but because I’m using gouache, the second horse in the image (who is brown) looks waaaaayyyy more opaque and the two subjects don’t fit together in the piece at all. How can I make the black horse more opaque without adding white for highlights? It doesn’t look right when I add white :/ it looks too..... fake gray.
can u please tell me what paper u used? thanks...great video

watercolor paper, sorry for the late response
Great video, I want to know why the black didn't spill into the eyes and messed the yellow? was it because the area was dry? I'm new to watercolor, and your video is very helpful. Thank you.
@MrOtterArtStudio

Hi, yes it was dry :)
@veryberry39
Жыл бұрын
Watercolor paint only wants to go where the water is. So if you let the eyes dry first, then just wet the paper around it, the black won't wanna flow over the dry bits. However, if you don't let the eyes dry first, everything will bleed together!
Which watercolor brand are you using here? My wet on wet with Canson Watercolor XL, CP, 140lb did not give bleeding like you got.

@@MrOtterArtStudio Thanks! Wet on wet now worked out fine. I posted my cat on my FB page.
Amazing cats! Thank you . I’m trying myself but realize that perhaps your paper is not cold pressed but perhaps hot pressed? My paint does not diffuse as much as yours, despite the very wet paper and thick paint.
@MrOtterArtStudio

My paper is cold pressed, paint and pigment should run wherever there is water, maybe you need more pigment on your brush?
my paper keeps curling and bubbling and then the paint gets spoilt and ends up in pools and rivers?? any advice ? x
