So I want to say THANK YOU... I'be never worked on boats, trim motors or anything like this before. But I wanted to do this myself & save money. Long story short, I bought a boat, trim didnt work. Replaced with a new trim tilt motor, replaced fluids & NOTHING. Watched EVERY KZread video possible & couldnt figure it out. Then I seen you video this morning (3 weeks since replacing trim motor) noticed the coupler for the shaft. And say "hey I seen 1 of those in the back of the boat" ran outside slapped it on & BOOM it works like a charm.. So again THANK YOU for the info.. HUGE HELP..

I love your videos. You have taught me a lot. My trim was not working last summer and when I brought it home it started working but pumped water out of the top of the piston. Time for new seals. I see there is one thing you and I have in common and that is having a cold one on the work bench. Cheers

I still can't get over how your videos have gone through EVERY part of an outboard. I had a 2 stroke that you helped me bring back to life. Now I have a Nissan 4 stroke which I picked up for a great deal! I'm about to pull the trim tilt and it needs some work for sure! Seals/O-rings and probably some electric motor work like your other video... but first I get to figure out how to unbend the rod! yikes!

Love this video. Trying to understand the system on a BF25 and I guess it's the same system. Our fault is that there is leaking fluid during the tilt part of the operation, but not trim. Do you know if there are any videos of the piston being overhauled?

Quick question. I rebuilt the rams. But when I give the motor gas fast the motor pushes the trin back down to the transit. Would it be the motor or the pump 🤔? Like it's not keeping the pressure in the same spot

my tilt trim motor is separate to the unit itself with tubes running to it, is that unusual?

Firstly your a Legend Stu, your video's have been hugely valuable with my Johnson 1993 50hp engine. I have a question my tilt system wasn't allowing the engine to be lifted all the way up and a friend of mine used some brake fluid to top it up and is now working again, but have since learn that I should have used ATF or tilt fluid, should I be worried about the mix of fluids in there? Should I try and drain it all out and start again? Will the brake fluid cause any damage? Thanks :-)

I took the motor off my trim/tilt and the piece that mounts to the motor to turn the pump came out but also looks like it had a broken spring, nothing was loose, any idea ?

This video helped, can you tell me how to get the bypass screw out if it is split at the scredriver hold. Meaning I cant get a screwdriver on it.

You'll have to drill it and use an easy out or something like that.

STU, can you explain how the oil gets from the resivour with the orange cap (spelling), down to the pump or whatnot? i always thought you filled the bowl up at the screw above the bypass screw you took out. which i think only fills up where the pump is at. correct me if i'm wrong. i want to understand the system as much as possible as i work through my issues with mine thank you, love the videos

This is probably something better shown that put into words I think. I'll do a video where I fully dismantle on of these units soon but the short version is that is a little drain hole that runs down towards the pump. the bulk of the oil is in the piston bore when the ram is up, so that reservoir takes the oil while it is down, passing it through that passage to the pump as it goes up.

+Danny Skok Make sure the bypass valve is screwed all the way in tight, it might be leaking a little bit. Otherwise, could possibly be the ram seals leaking. Also, with the motor trimmed all the way up check the rod for corrosion or pitting as that will cause oil to leak past the seals even if they are good.

Just a tip: Cut some pieces from an old car tire to use as grippers for your vise. That will allow you to tighten without cracking the housing.

No, you can fill the oil through a cap with the motor in place. There is special trim tilt oil you can buy from boat stores that is made for these units.

Another excellent video by you Stu, full of heaps of technical knowhow, well done. I just got my boat back from repairs by having my hydraulic t&t pump replaced as the old one was completely dead, it could probably be repaired but the one which replaced it was gotten at an excellent price which i couldnt say no to and gave me a chance to get the boat going again. A question though Stu, the guy who replaced my t&t pump also installed my bilge pump however the outlet he's drilled a hole in the side of my boat and run the outlet to the hose, i really dont remember if the location where he's put the bilge outlet was sitting below the waterline or not so i really have to take my boat to a ramp one of these weekends just to test it out make sure no water gets in, do you know of any really quiet/empty boat ramps around Sydney where i wouldnt be disturbing anybody spending a couple of hours with testing the boat on the trailer? My closest boat ramp is at Chipping Norton however it gets pretty packed out at times not to mention its a single size ramp where im 100% sure i would be giving people the shits by me testing my boat out.

+tolgahk84 Hi Mate. I would be very surprised if your bilge pump outlet was below the water line. That is a mistake that no profession would make. I'm not that familiar with boat ramps south of Sydney, but the boat ramp in Brooklyn at Parsley Bay that I use is very quiet during the week.

How did you find the O-ring? Honda sells the full valve at ridiculous price! :D

G’day from Coffs Harbour bloke. I’m having trouble starting with an empty fresh rebuilt tilt and trim. Filling the hydraulics from dead empty and bleeding on a 94 mercury mariner single ram I haven’t replaced the manual tilt screw and o rings.

Generally you just open the bypass screw and then lift the motor up and let gravity drop it down again about five times. I would then lock off the bypass and try to lift it from the switch. If it doesn't work, lift it up, top up the fluid again and repeat.

Hi. I just watched your channel. I have question about my 1988 Johnson 80horse outboard.It starts great, but when you accelerate, the motor only runs at about 3900 to 4200 rpms should be around 5200. All new electric parts. 20 ft. pontoon, prop is 11 pitch. any help Thanks

It can be a few things. First thing I would do is make sure the manual bypass is fully closed. You can even try opening it and then fully closing it again. If they doesn't work you can try removing it completely and then replacing the seals on it. If it still drops you will need to replace the seals inside the hydraulic ram.

Do you know what the O ring size is that you replaced under the fluid reservoir? 4:24

Ah, good question, I don't deal with many of those, I always assumed they were a gas strut of some type. I do have one in the workshop at the moment though so I'll take a look at it during the week. Might make an interesting video.

Thankyou for your very informative Videos as always! I have the same problem with my Tohatsu M40D2 Power trim and tilt, and it looks exactly like this Honda's PTT. I have removed the reservoir tank oil seal as you mentioned and it is the same as the one you changed - Green colour, same numbers printed on seal. Do you suggest I buy the Honda seal? Since Tohatsu do not offer the seal on it's own (you have to buy the whole reservoir tank for 120 dollars plus shipping!!!) thankyou once again!

Most oil seals have a part number. As you can see lots of manufacturers use the same seals. The seal part number is the key. Honda buys the same seal that you can buy.

Hi Stu Really enjoying your how to videos I knew nothing about boats till i started watching your videos from leaning to drive a boat through to fixing the out board. You have taught me well. Thank You. I have one question that i can't find the answer to. When i raise my engine with the tilt it works no probs i can stop it half way ect. The problem is when i go to lower it once it starts to go down i cant stop it till it hits the bottom. It does not free fall but goes down around the same speed as it rises. I cant figure out what is happening with it, Its a Johnson v4 85hp. A true 1980 Classic. Any ideas on what could be wrong ?? Cheers Andy

Hey Andy, glad to hear the vids have been helping you. Can you hear the motor running when it is going down. If so it sounds like a sticking relay. If not it sounds like a sticking valve or a bad seal inside the hydraulic unit. The relay can just be replaced but the hydraulic problem would involve pulling it completely apart and inspecting each component.

I will have a look at the weekend i'm not sure if it was running or not. I will keep you updated. i have watched the relay build you did so that wont be a problem to build a new circuit. if it is the pump well that will have to be a shot in the dark as to if i can fix it or not. One last question how long does it take for Dangar t shirt to reach Scotland ? If i need to rebuild the pump i may as well video it. I have a 2003 Johnson 4 stroke model J50PL4ST and water is getting into the t&t pump. Johnson only offers and I have purchased, an o-ring set that has two large o-rings for the pump motor and the ram cover. Also there are three smaller o-rings that are used on the pump itself. The unit is made by Showa. While watching your excellent video, I noticed that the t&t unit is almost identical to mine. I was wondering if yours is a Showa and if the seal for the ram cover would work on my Johnson. Also, what did you use to wash out your pump? Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike. I'd have to have a look what pump it was. It belongs to a friend but I am going to be getting it back soon as I think the impeller itself may have suffered some damage from the water. These days I've been using aftermarket seals. I've found a shop down the road where I take the original seal and he will give me a seal for a couple of dollars that is a perfect match. The only thing to be careful of is that not all seals come with stainless steel springs in them. In this case he will remove the spring, measure it and give me a nitrile o-ring of the same size to replace it with. This ends up costing $3 instead of $15. To wash the pump I used brake cleaner. Methylated spirits is good for removing water.

Thanks for the quick reply. Wish I could find a shop close by with the aftermarket parts but nothing close by me in the USA, South Carolina. I still feel that my Johnson pump and the Honda pump in the video are the same units. I looked up the parts lists for both on Boats.net and there is a huge difference in pricing. Johnson lists the part you put the seal into as a tank with a cost of $143.61. Honda lists the same looking part as an oil tank for $9.19 without the seal. The seal is another $10.42. I have my t&t off the motor and I'm going to take it to a Honda dealer and compare to theirs. Hopefully they will be the same.

I ordered the ram wiper seal from Honda for the T&T oil tank on my 2003 Johnson 4 stroke. It is the same seal that you show in the package in this video. I got the o-rings from Johnson for the tank and tilt motor. I cleaned the old oil from my unit, installed seal and o-rings and it works great. Thanks for your video. It really saved me a bundle of money, Mike

I'm currently working on my own trim unit. I've found that the little key that you talked about that goes from the motor to the pump does not turn easily in the pump. Is there any way to free that up?

Did you have water in the oil? It is probably as corrosion problem inside the pump. Disassembling and cleaning is probably the way to go. Will be doing a video on that soon.

+Danny Skok If the cylinder seals are leaking it will be an internal leak, just oil passing the piston and going back into the reservoir. I'll be doing a video on replacing those in early April.

Hay stu i got one for ya my yamaha tilit trim goes up when im tilting it down. I checked the moter it spins both ways. I rebuilt the seals and bled it out. It will trimm up but wont go down you think the pump could be stuck

I jump back to this video today because my Yamaha F115 trim seal should be problem. I replace it last year with new seal but hammered out of trim cylinder head, it seems okay just the surface maybe not good look, but it still fit into new seal. But after a year now it just leaking from seal once again. The thing I notice was those seal should be 2 of them, one was sit inside of the cylinder head another one should be you can outside, but in the parts book not very clear the inside seal direction, but I just installed into the cylinder head and works about a year. Any suggestion? or just change the whole cylinder head and seal? Thanks.

If seals are leaking after a year it could be that the shaft that runs through the seal either has some pitting that allows water to bypass the seal or some burrs that are cutting the seal. I would check it closely for that.

Thanks, I had take out those seal and found some fishing line balls in it, it stick pretty hard to the shaft, and it should be the problem damage to the seals. After I order two seal and using your hack way to replaced them and also the oil, I tried the boat yesterday it runs great once again. Thanks for your video, it always help!

That looks about right from memory, but I've had that exact problem myself in the past. To figure it out I found an exploded diagram for the engine which showed the correct assembly orientation.

They all work on the same basic principles just with a slightly valve configuration sometimes.

6:50 putting the plastic seal back in, I did this a few months ago and it didn't hold, I try different glue, about to try again. Did you ever make the video about rebuilding the hydrolic ram unit?? Thanks for the awesome videos :)

I have one that I think would fit, but unfortunately I am missing the bypass valve from it and that part is discontinued from Honda. If your unit has the exact same valve (depending on year) we may be able to make one working one out of the two.

Just installed a new trim motor on my 75 mariner a few weeks ago. Noticed an oil leak around the base. Looks like it coming out from where the trim motor sits on the plate. Seen this before?

Yes, it's very easy to have the o-ring not seat properly. A lot of the local mechanics around here put sealant on the flange too for a double seal, just make sure not to let any get into the oil.

+Val M It more important to keep it topped up that to replace it. In fact there isn't any quick way to drain the old fluid out like there is with a sump or a gearbox. By topping it up every 100 hours (or annually) you'll be able to see if you are losing oil or have water in the oil and need to do the seals. Hydraulic fluid doesn't absorb water like brake fluid and doesn't get dirty like sump oil. I'm sure there must be some practical limit to its lifespan but I would be more likely to use a pump to fill the reservoir and just displace a bit of the old oil each time to keep it fresh.

Try turning the bypass screw then lifting the motor up and down four or five times by hand then toping up the oil level while it is in the up position. Next close the bypass screw and operate it using the switch again.

It is on the side of the trim tilt unit down low. You will access it through a hole in the mounting bracket.

That bypass screw is usually held in by a circlip so if you remove that clip you should be able to wind it all the way out. Also, if you open the fill hole with the motor up then let it drop down it will push a fair amount out, but be careful, it can squirt quite a distance! You can then suck the remained out through the fill hole with a turkey baster or a syringe with a bit of hose attached.

Hi Stu Great video, thanks. I'm going to change the trim-tilt motor on my 2002 50hp Yamaha four-stroke. The motor is working fine, but the housing looks bad, very rusty. I can get an Arco or Sierra motor from America for around $350, or I can buy a no-name brand on ebay for $150. Is it worth spending the extra $200? Or do you know somewhere else I could get it? I'm in Perth. For the small parts like o-rings is there an online shop where I can get them, or do i need to go to my local Yamaha dealer? I have the service manual, but it doesn't have the part numbers. Thanks!

+David Hankin Hi David. You could also try Oz Wide Starters. They also carry a range of trim tilt motors. Quality can vary quite a bit. I've seen some aftermarket ones rust out pretty fast.

Hi, I got 81 model johnson 70hp .my trims have started leaking fluid but my tilt is good that was last week, this week my tilt is making horrible noises not sure if air got in. i tried to bleed it filling it up with fluid but noise still there. the sounds it makes is like an old rusted hinge ROFL very loud any help, please

It could be a problem with the pivot points being corroded so your hinge theory might be right.

thanks for the reply. I have serviced it, grease all the places that have grease nipples. the noise comes from inside the tilt ram, I place my hand on it and I can feel the vibration coming from it. LOL now I'm paranoid it could be the ram top joint where the pin goes throw I will check it. anyway, mate love your show, I'm a big fan keep up with good work. I wish you had a video on how to replace seals and remove end caps on a motor like mine.i always take my boat to Brooklyn not far from you.all the best

update it is the top ram joint. been spraying wd40 letting it sit for 1h then I tilt the motor up/down. done it few times the noise has improved.I think the best way is to remove the pin clean all and regrease it but the pin doesn't budge

Question for you: I have reviewed everything you have posted about trim ram systems (and a few other people's posts) but I am not seeing my particular issue: Trim motor and pump go up and down well but it will not stay trimmed when the boat is under way and under power. It was suggested to check the manual bypass. When I did, there wasn't much give in the tightening direction. So I opened the bypass until the motor dropped down under it's own weight and tightened it again to re-seat the bypass valve. I think the only way to test it is to launch the boat and put it under way again? ...or is there another way to test it? How else can I test it out of the water and what else should I be considering as the problem if it fails under way testing when I put the boat back in the water next March or April? PS: Thanks for everything you do here, brother! You have saved my @ss several times now....

Hi mate. I'm going to be doing a video on this problem very soon. It can be either the seals / o-rings around the bypass valves or the seal around the hydraulic ram. If that seal is failing then oil can bypass the piston and it start to drop, much like worn rings causing a motor to lose compression.

I saw my trim tilt oil is milky. Is it mean water got in? I m new. Just bought a used boat. I hear the motor sound when i press the up button but when i press the down button i just hear the click.

Yes, that means water in the oil. Try swapping the relays over and see if the problem reverses. If so you just need a new relay, if not check wiring.

Not sure how much it takes to fill them. The service manual doesn't give you a capacity just says to fill until it overflows when the motor is all the way up.

i have drained the system made sure I have no water in it. oil is clean, the amount that came out is 300ml, I think it might take a bit more maybe 400ml cause my seals are leaking

Having an issue,,top off my trim fluid..works fine out of water and at low speed,,but once I throttle motor up my tilt doesn't work.. can trim into desired position but fall back down once I throttle up(if that makes sense).. watched several of your videos about trim/tilt but none cover this issue..it's a Evinrude

Sounds like a leaning seal in either the piston or the bypass valve.

@@DangarMarine Ive watch a few video on replacing/rebuilding tilt Orings and was considering going that route but them few post etc said consider accuator valve in trim

how about thread tape on the screws to help seal

I wouldn't put any on. If a bit breaks off it will block the hydraulic passages the oil flows through. The o-rings and seals (if in good condition) are up to the job.

Is it necessary to remove the outboard from the boat?

Not always, sometimes you can just undo one side of the transom mount and pull it aside to get the trim til unit out.

Have you ever done a vid on a honda trim seals leaking. If not what kind of tool do you use to get the end caps off? I see alot of guys chiselling theses things that can’t be the only way...

Hi Kreig. I have done a video on some Honda trim tilt seals, I think this was the one kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGSL1bCAqarShpM.html I do want to do a video on the other piston seals too one day soon. These guys sell a variety of face spanners for removing the top caps of trim tilt units, but unfortunately they aren't cheap, I guess that's why many people just chisel them off marinetechtools.com/

Have you ever seen the actual 12v motor housing (where the armature sits in) fill with fluid? I have that going on with my 98 yamaha 150 tilt trim unit. Im baffled. The oil seal on the shaft (that turns the pump drive) appears undamaged but the electric motor case is filling with fluid none the less.

Yes, I have see that, but every time the oil seal around the shaft has been obviously damaged or falled out completely.

@@DangarMarine its acting like there is too much pressure on the top side of the pump assembly (where the motor and key way sits in) and its inadvertently forcing fluid passed the oil seal. I don't know much about these systems so im not sure if its normal to have pressure on that side. I'm just stumped. I went through and stripped the pump assembly down today and blew out all the orifices just to make sure. Ill throw it back together and see if it changed. If you have any ideas, feel free to throw them my way.

Anyone know the part numbers for the seal kit

Looked all through there I can not find it. My issue is that I have a DF115 Suzuki and the IPB does now how a shaft seal independent from the $200 cover. It looks exactly the same as the one you pulled off in this video. What motor was in the video of what part number for that seal. Ie been searching for 2 days now.

Do yourself a favor clean the outside of the assembly before you start dismantling it. smiles.

Good tip! I always do that with brake fluid reservoirs so it should have occurred to me to do it with this unit. :)

Avoid using diesel for flushing out, as it is bad for the seals.

You lost me ? You said in the beginning of the video that you had milkshake in the unit and were going to flush it out with ATF and then into the video you leave the water in the unit and just replace the seals . WTF dude why would you leave water in the unit that is very bad on internals and the pump. I waited all this time and you never flushed out with the ATF like you said to get the water out
