A timely piece of trivia: The character The Comedian was originally going to be Peacemaker, since DC had just acquired the IP when the author pitched the idea. But DC told the author (Alan Moore) they'd rather he use all original characters instead. He still pretty much wrote the character the exact same way, though.

All of the characters were originally going to be Charlton characters. Comedian was based on Peacemaker, Dr. Manhattan was based on Capt. Atom, Silk Specter was based on Nightshade, Ozymandias was based on Thunderbolt, Nite-Owl was Blue Beetle, and Rorschach is based on The Question.

If you look for Alan Moore interviews on this, you'll find he says the characters ended up changing a lot. He originally planned to use them, but considers the final characters to be unique and not reskinned versions of the originals. It's still super-interesting as part of the story origin, but similarities are over-exaggerated by the rumor mill because the idea seems cool to fans.

I love the dark depression of the comedian. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays it so well. You really feel for him. A guy who may have started as a hero but as time passes by he realizes they aren't really heroes. They're not saving anything. He accepts it. He's a monster and a weapon that the government can just aim at each new enemy when they inevitably come along and say kill.

The Boys is a far better (and far superior, in this regard) comic and TV show that explores that premise since all the superheroes in that are actually super-powered and super-human. Dr. Manhattan is the only actual "superhero" in The Watchmen. (closer to a demigod, actually). I saw this in the theatre... and as the trailers were ending, and the movie was about to start, this guy come in, sits down farther in the row with his two kids that looked about 8yrs old. I was in the military when this movie came out and my base actually got to see it about a week before general audiences got to see it. I remember some families with rather young kids and knew that they knew nothing about the source material because this ain't your standard cape and cowl superhero story. You'd think that people would notice the rating and look into why it's rated that way if they're going to take young kids to watch it.

This movie might be worth revisiting sometime later in the "Ultimate Cut". Watchmen is based on a graphic novel of the same name (one of the best there are) - and the story in that book is actually told in chunks, with a secondary story intertwined that comments on the main narrative in subtle ways. This secondary story was adapted into its own standalone animated movie, and then in the Watchmen Ultimate Cut, they took the Director's Cut of Watchmen (which has a bunch of scenes from the comic that were not in the theatrical version) and basically re-created the book by inserting the animated movie into it and slowly telling both stories in chunks in the exact same manner as in the source material (with a few short additional scenes on top for the transitions). It's obviously a lot longer than what you watched, being 2 movies in one - but it might be fun to check it out in a year or so and see what you think :) I love this movie. It's one of my favorites - even if the comic stands far and beyond above it in quality. I also don't think Zack Snyder did really manage to convey the core and soul of the comics adequately, turning it into way to much of a glorification of superheroes, where the comic book was a ruthless deconstruction with an even more critical view on the whole idea. But the movie is great even in spite of that.

As I understood it, Moore wanted to really push the envelope on superheroes, what would or might actually occur, and, as such, this became one of the landmark deconstructions of the premise of superheroes and a world where they exist wouldn't sustain itself or that heroes wouldn't.

I know that at 2.5 hrs it feels slow however a lot of the restored footage in the director's cut draws clearer connections between the scenes and allows for a less jarring and more natural pace. Character development benefits as well. Generally, whenever Zack Snyder releases a director's cut that is the version to watch.
