This episode came out after 9/11. I'm surprised Grampy didn't ask Moe "When do you get your flying carpet?". And when Moe responded that he's afraid of flying, Grampy would have said "Thats good. We don't want to lose anymore tall buildings".

Gypsy being a slur I've learned is mixed. Some Romani say it is a slur, while others seem pissed that those Romani are taking what they call themselves away and prefer the term Gypsy. I've concluded that the whole thing is a mess that I have no say in as an outsider.

  • @gav1233

I'd avoid it because it comes from the word "Egypt". At the time, it was believed that the Romani originated in Egypt when they actually migrated to Europe from India. Not only is the word offensive to most Romani, it's factually wrong. However, some Romani, especially those in the United States, still use it because Americans wouldn't know what they're talking about when they say "Romani". That's what I've heard.

When I was younger I always heard the word “gyped” but never knew how it was spelt or what they were referring to. I thought it was spelt Jipped. Anyway, used it back in a forum and was called out for using a slur. Some understood because of how I spelt it and how I responded that I had no idea, but some insisted I was racist. 😢

@@danicafugit2697 I hate people from that last category. Like, come on, it's possible for people to genuinely not know something. A lot of east asian cultures don't know the n-word as a slur, because they were never a part of that business. And I'm betting the people who know the Romani slur is a slur probably don't know a single slur in Kenya.

From what I'm seeing here, I'm sure the creators had no idea just how visible the problem would become over the next 20 years, but I think they tried their best even if it doesn't full-on tackle the issue im the end. What I'd like to have seen is her and her grandpa having THAT excuse. You know the one, the "of his time" excuse. And he has to eventually acknowledge that it was wrong then and it's wrong now. He could admit that he knows it's wrong and tell her he doesn't really know her friends, but he loves her and wants to be better for her sake. Then she can take that forward to her friend's relationship: that she doesn't really know him yet, but she loves her and wants to do right by her. It could let the friend feel safe enough to let her guard down and open up about the problem in her relationship.

Very sloppy execution. It had a lack of focus and tried to juggle multiple scenarios that honestly should have had their own separate episode dedicated to it. The one with Maria and the guy should have been its own episode. As for the Grandpa, from a narrative perspective he needed to be held accountable at some capacity. Not villainized but held accountable for his inappropriate attitudes towards people of color. An intervention. SOMETHING! Don’t just dismiss it as generational difference. Overall a well meaning but confusing mess of an episode.

So after the og BraceFace video you did (about Busted), me and the fiancee decided to actually sit and watch BraceFace. Honestly? I think everyone should give it a chance. Once you see what they show is actually about, all the weird shit falls into place - it’s a show made to discuss topics you don’t want to bring up to your parents. There are episodes that are lowkey step-by-step instructions for Middle Schoolers in tough spots, such as their friend being inappropriately talked to by a teacher, handling a friend’s breakup, finding a way to keep step with your bullies, how to navigate tricky arguments/disagreements, and - yes - how to handle puberty and the insecurities it comes with. It’s genuinely a good show, and I mean that. Go try it!

I feel like Maria is valid in her feelings towards Sharron’s grandpa, but the end kills it what could have been a good message. If it was shown that Sharron had a conversation with him and he tried to make an effort to change, it would have been better. That’s not to say that it’s as simple as a one time conversation irl. It’s not and some people don’t care to grow. Ultimately they chose to stay horrible people. You can’t change the minds of people who are too afraid to leave their bubble and grow a world view. I understand generational language differences but you can tell when someone is using language with the intent to be offensive. There is a difference between ignorance and racism. Edit because I thought of something else. Even if they had shown Sharron confronting her grandfather, even if he rejected her criticism, if the focus was on Sharron doing the right thing, and standing up for her friend and others, and acknowledging that her grandfather is wrong and that she was wrong for being dismissive, even that would have been better than how it ended.

Braceface had some interesting episode themes that I haven't seen that many shows tackle, i.e. the period episode (Sharon gets her first period while out on her first date with the boy she likes). There was an episode where Sharon gave in to peer pressure and drank alcohol, another where she starved herself after the show's mean girl called her fat and so on and so forth.

For a Canadian kids show, maybe it tackled it in a good enough way but the fact that sexism in the same episode which also may have had the grandpa double down on his beliefs about Muslims or those from the middle east was probably not great to put in the same episode. South Park did do way better on this though to the point that their black viewers loved how it was done

I need to watch this series more, I mostly remember bits and pieces. And you did a riff on the breast implant episode, but there's an episode in this same season with presumptions about a guy's sexual orientation and I think it's the guy she's talking to after Maria calls out her privilege. But I'm not sure they ever use the word gay, which is reflected here too, he says, he's adorable when you'd know if you'd seen the other episode that he's apparently not into girls. Which isn't the one I thought it was, it's a later season, seemingly the one that wasn't broadcast on Disney because of the Busted episode

One thing I respect is that the grandfather DOESN'T Just stop being a bigot because he gets a nice talking to. Racism is one of those things that takes a lot of time and effort to overcome, and it requires a lot of self reflection, even from people with mild views. To many Very special episodes took the path of "oh the guy just stops being racist because he's told about it" which is both unrealistic AND gives the impression racism isn't that big a deal, which is dishonest. The hot dog thing I interpreted as he's at least willing to try to be more open minded, which is a good compromise

No it is a slur because it was literally classed as such by Romani groups since like the 1980s. It's a term thats been used in the racism/prejudice against them, has been used to generalize their culture and was a mislabel in the first place (Being that they were thought to be Egyptian). Kind of like how "Indians" was a mislabel for Native Americans. Of course the way these given names are treated isn't exact.

I never would liked this cartoon. I don’t like how they have four fingers.

The four fingers are a remnant of the first animations, so that's an interesting fact

Slice of life anime is great, but I honestly didn't care much for American slice of life. Too many cringe moments

Just cause you have different skin, nationality or even views doesnt make you a bad person. If the grampa showed hostility then he'd clearly be the badguy but he was pulling humor and the arab was going along with the jokes. If the arab pulled a joke about grey foxes then i believe the gramps would've taken the humor just as well. But then again i wouldnt know how this episode went. This video is my intro to it but i find that the way a person acts says more than what they say.

A lot of times people who experience racism laugh and crack jokes to cope with a common and awkward situation in part because if you call people out on their racism or ignorance, they get defensive and say “it’s just a joke” “you’re too sensitive” “lighten up” etc. it’s easier to dismiss and deflect by playing a long, not being we think it’s funny or ok but because we’ll be dismissed or raged against for calling it out.
