First I want to say Kida is the best freakin Disney Princess turned Queen. She is over 8,500 years old, but looks like she is only in her 20's, knows every language, strong, funny, and saved her entire civilization take that Elsa!!! The reason it failed was because of Dinosaur. It wasn't the hit Disney hoped for so they slashed the budget of Atlantis so they had to condense the originally planned 155 minute version by dropping the 2nd act, cutting a bigger final battle, and the reveal of the crystal being of alien origin. Then since Atlantis bombed Disney cancelled the planned tv series which would have had a crossover with Gargoyles!!!

@@MemesToa I am aware. However, if the ending of Atlantis being raised to the surface a few years post WWII was always going to the show's endgame, in the event the show was actually greenlit, then that's around 50 years for a radically divergent timeline with Atlantis becoming a known factor in geopolitical calculations decades before the Gargoyles awaken to live in a new era's shadows. It's doable, possibly saying that all the advanced tech in Gargoyles is the result of Atlantean tech reverse engineering, but this puts the two IP's on vastly uneven terms instead of presenting both as equally great.

Ugh that’s so unfair. Atlantis was an amazing movie and knowing it could’ve been even bigger hurts, especially cuz it got cut cuz of a mediocre movie preceding it. But it also sucks cuz we know that even if they kept all the other stuff, it wouldn’t have been a big hit either. This was back in the day when audiences decided 2D animation was for babies and action animated movies were not worth it.

I LOVE Atlantis. It's so criminally underrated even to this day. And, oddly enough, any time I rewatch it nowadays, I feel like I'm watching a director's cut, because I grew up with the VHS version and they had to get REALLY creative with the timing of shots and panning in edit so they'd fit on the screen in time with the Movie's flow. Whereas the DVD just has it all on screen at once. Seriously, I watched the VHS tape SO MUCH that I'm always taken off guard when watching the DVD because the scene didn't cut and stuff happens in the same shot as something else my brain is just hard-wired to think Don't happen in the same shot. Guess I'm kinda lucky, that way. I get to watch the movie for the first time over and over again because my brain just can't remember it any other way than the VHS😂

It's an explanation but not a good one. The Atlanteans went down thousands of years ago, so how would they completely understand French or any of the other languages? Because language changes over time, look at Mexican Spanish and Spanish from Spain. They both have similarities and their differences that can cause difficulty in understanding them. So at most they could pick up some words but they shouldn't be able to speak and understand it fluently. Especially because they haven't had any outside interaction since they went underground, BEFORE French existed.

@@ExtremeMadnessX Okay fair enough. Maybe to fix it you have Milo start with English, then tries another language and working backwards until he reaches latin, greek and they start to work to reach the point of understanding and can then work their way up to English? Just a thought off the top of my head.

I can never get tired of Atlantis. I have watched every single Disney animated film in its canon and THIS is one of several underrated flicks that were adventure-driven, not musically inclined. Michael J. Fox as linguist explorer Milo Thatch is easily notable and recognizable. His character design vaguely reminds me of Roger Radcliffe of 101 Dalmatians. Must be due to the animation style and height.

From what I’d gathered, the guy that wrote the shepherd’s journal was a French shepherd who probably taught them French. My head canon is that while they taught him Atlantean as a spoken language, he pieced things together for the written parts and he just didn’t tell them that. What the king meant when he said “A thousand years ago you would have killed them on sight” or something to that effect, was probably because they met an outsider who already exploited them and made off with some knowledge that Kida believed could have saved them. Just a headcanon.

I can believe it. Both Atlantis and Stargate have basically the same plot. Both begin with a Flashback regarding the relevant civilization. It cuts to a nerdy scholar providing a presentation with relevant exposion concerning said civilization. The scholar is recruited by a lady to take part in an unprecedented and secret expedition, where their particular expertise in linguistics proves vital in finding a lost civilization. Then the villain appears and the scholar helps save the day. At the end, the scholar chooses to stay with the long lost people.

5:30 no no saber has a good point, so given the timeline of Atlantis’s sinking it’s likely (and with the Tower of Babel argument brought up in the movie) the Atlanteans were familiar with the indo-European language group and maybe even some of the languages that rose to prominence during the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age such as Crete’s Linear A, Egyptian, Akkadian, maybe the languages of the Medes, classical Greeks, and Assyrians if we push it. But the Atlanteans would’ve already been cut off by the time Latin would’ve been reached its peak usage, and since French is derived from Latin with a significant number of names and agricultural words derived from Gaulish another language that stems from Indio-European language groups but had its unique historical development. Atlanteans knowing English is even less likely since it’s a combination of multiple sources such as medieval French, Saxon, brettonic, and Latin. In short regardless if the world shared a single language during the construction of babel, even if the Atlanteans are familiar with the roots of the indo-European language group, they could not possibly account for the ways it developed over the centuries.

Most characters like this are guys. And don’t get me wrong, I love the guys. It’s just that I always feel like I relate more to them than to any female characters in movies. Maybe it’s just the ‘tism TM but idk. I’d love to see more nerdy women in animation that aren’t just the “Disney adorkable girl” trope, or the “not like other girls” trope, or the “wait until she takes off her glasses” trope.

I love almost everything about this movie... Almost. Unfortunately, my one bug hang-up is with its protagonist. Milo Thatch is... Not the most engaging character. His two main comedy beats, his clumsiness and naivety, go from charming to annoying pretty fast, i don't care for him doing all the repair work and thus crowding Audrey out of her one thing, and I don't really buy his transition to action hero in the third act. I feel like he plays some extremely outdated tropes depressingly straight, and that what attempts there are to subvert them only make it more obvious when they're playing it straight. And nothing against Michael J. Fox, he is a talented and very likable actor, but he just doesn't have a lot to work with here. Every other character is more intersting than him, which isn't a problem limited to just one Disney movie, but it's espeically obvious here. He's like Daniel Jackson, but without a lot of the stuff that made Daniel a beloved character.

Watchalong content again... come on man, you used to do in depth reviews on the animation industry, now you're turning in to a generic react channel I get that this cheap content is a money printer, but it's not good content. I miss the good content you used to make
