    I feel like this movie is the perfect example of the female gaze and also how people become attractive as you get to know them. Like, they genuinely make Mr. Darcy more attractive as the movie goes on. and its such a great slow burn!!!

  • @wildoranges

    @wildoranges

    2 ай бұрын

    'female gaze' as such does not exist the way you're using it. 'male gaze' specifically means the way in our society women are depicted through the masculine heterosexual lens as objects for the pleasure of heterosexual male viewers. it's a specific word to name a specific way of misogynist oppression, not simply a male viewpoint of attraction. so tacking the world 'female' on instead to mean a female viewpoint of attraction is a false equivalence. also describing the female view as inherently less shallow or more emotionally attached is no less gender essentialist just because those traits are deemed positive.

    That scene of Mr Darcy walking in the field, at sunrise, awaken my delusional mind: the man did not sleep at all that night, pondering about his feelings and a life without Lizzy, and in an act of despair yet hopeful, he walked for hourzzzz (let's be real, the man doesn't live next door) to reach his beloveD, trying once more for his darling to put him out of his misery... With haste, he dressed up but did not take the time to button up his shirt (sexy Darcy 👀🤭) , he's walking in a determined fashion in those fields, the man knows, he is burning for her❤‍🔥❤‍🔥... I love those period romance stories

    I am loving that so many people are watching this movie now! Long time Austen fan, I love the books, mini-series over the years but this film has insanely beautiful cinematography. The infamous hand flex is probably the most well known achievement, but their dance is a jewel as well as Darcy walking across the moors. If memory serves, they had to use a laser pointer to help the actor walk that distance with the lighting.

  • @johnnehrich9601

    @johnnehrich9601

    Yes, it isn't too clear from the book, as I remember, as to whether he was cousin to Mr. Bennet or to the daughters. It sort of gets passed off as he was a "distant" cousin. (Cousin is/was often used as a collective term for relations sort of vague.) In Gone With The Wind (set in 1860's), Scarlett's father tells her the Melanie is going to marry Ashley and in that family, cousins often married.

    Could you be the one of the first to not buy Mr. Charming's story? Sad boy has more than one reason to protect himself, his family and his friend. Every mother on earth trying to solicit their daughters to him, protection of his sister and can only direct his friend from his own experiences. However, he was a bit pompous in doing so. Until he got the Lizzy smack down. He did the work without expectation to better himself. And she grew to be more understanding of herself as well. Jane Austin's happily ever after story's written for her sister and for herself.

    AHHH! I just found your channel and love seeing people find Austen's stuff for the first time. Your other content looks right up my alley too. I have to recommend the 2020 adaption of Emma if you liked this. The direction is just gorgeous and the chemistry between the leads is amazing. If you've ever seen Clueless you'll be familiar with the general plot as it was a modern adaption of Emma! I've also recently fallen in love with the 1995 adaption of Persuasion if second-chance romance is a trope you like. A lot of people prefer the 2007 version, but I like how accurate the 1995 version is and how they nail the sort of subtle yearning of the leads.

    Mr. Collins and Mrs. Bennet are representing the common sense marriage typical of that day. Since Mr. Collins will inherit the Bennet property, if he marries one of the Bennet girls, it will provide a way for them all to remain in the house they love. Lizzie and Darcy are actually being really impractical, but it all works out because he is hella rich.

    I know of four filmed adaptations of this story (that stick to the original storyline), a 1940 black-n-white version, a 1980's (I think) 6-part series, the 1990's series, and this movie. The '80's version is pretty bad in my opinion, in being slow and sort of emotionless. The 1940 version is a bit different - the story is told from a lighter view. (This movie used the town waddling geese movement from the Pictures at an Exhibition, which is mocking the way the Bennet mother and daughters act together.) But it is interesting to see. I have to admit I saw both the '40 version and the 1990's one, and didn't really get into either. After watching this 2005 movie, I went back and read the book and rewatched the earlier ones, enjoying all of them more and more. Took me awhile to figure out who was related to whom by what connection. (I also went to watch the 2005 version after watching Red, White & Royal Blue - 100x - to see a romcom from an earlier era.)
