Jane Austen has a quote about how you’re not supposed to like Emma it’s like part of the point, and after I read that it really made me love the story more and more over time and realize how funny it is. As a pride and prejudice girlie I love emma

"Emma" is one of my favorite Austen novels ... I usually like it more than "P&P": I love that flawed young woman, who, in the novel, possesses the most important quality of an Austen heroine: the capacity to learn. In the novel, she admits her wrongs often and early. She falls back a bit, and suffers envy of Jane Fairfax, but she is a very human character. She truly loves and cares for her father, and her family. She does mean to do the best for Harriet, and in the novel, Mr. Knightley admits that Emma has actually benefitted Harriet socially. Also, Highbury is truly brought to life in the novel - I really feel the reality of the community and the people in it.

I like that you called Mr Knightly the Lizzy of the Emma world, because he absolutely is! Emma is the Darcy who's been getting away with being an asshole because of their social position and eventually comes to appreciate the one who calls them out on it.

24:05 I find this part so interesting cause Emma looks really shocked over what she just said and rightly so: she has always been mean with others but in a veiled, subtle way. Being close to Knightley doesn't make her much kinder, but at least she knows someone who matters to her will call her out on her bullsh#t. Then Frank comes and just amplifies her mean ways with his own. She drops her facade and doesn't like the version of herself she finds on the other side of that.

This is late, but Emma was not old for the time.Despite what some bodice rippers and other historical romance may have you believe, 21 was a perfectly marriageable age.

29:27 They managed to get Emma's father to consent to the match and to let Mr Knightly move in with him rather than Emma moving into his house because of news that chicken thieves had been in the area. Mr Woodhouse felt more secure against them with Mr Knightly being there.

Emma is one of my favorite books & this was such a top tier adaptation. I do think the 2009 BBC adaptation is also really amazing, & Romola Garai makes her a bit more obviously likeable because she’s much more energetic. I don’t think she means to be mean. She’s just lived an isolated life in a small town. Mrs Bates, while very sweet, could be taxing at times if one remembers how small her circle was. I also think while she was rude about how she went about Harriet’s matchmaking, she did want the best for her friend & it was typical of the time to not only marry for love but also think about what would be best for the future. That, & she thought Elton better probably due to his being part of the church (which was much more respected… which clearly isn’t as obvious or assumed now). I love Emma because she’s flawed, but still willing eventually to change & grow. She’s relatable in the way that she sometimes makes poor decisions, but she ultimately tries to make up for them.

Check out Johnny Flynn’s music. My favourite pieces are The Detectorists theme music (btw great comedy show) and The Water (a duet with Laura Marling). He sings the Queen Bee song in the closing credits of the Emma movie too. Miranda Hart who plays Miss Bates is a national treasure here in UK and we all love her. She has her own show - Miranda - and plays the wonderful Chumley in Call The Midwife.

I grew up with Clueless and knew it was based on Emma, though I had never read the book or seen any of the screen adaptations. I finally decided to give this version a go, and my god! I fell in love with it upon first watch. It is perfection...the casting, the pacing of the script, the cinematography and direction are all **chef's kiss** Anya and Johnny were wonderful as Emma and Knightley. I've always considered myself a Pride and Prejudice girly, but after watching this version of Emma, I'm leaning slightly more towards Emma.

I loved pride and prejudice (The film) when it came out and I was a preteen. I tried to read Emma, but had to put it down several times, bc the books was just really boring to me. (I read the German translation and the language is just really old) then years later Emma 2020 was realeased and I think I now like this film even more than pride and prejudice. it's hard to tell which one one liked better, bc they're so different. I think pride and prejudice is for the hopeless romantics (in a way. mb bc of the trailer.)

interesting how you cut this scene (7:47 Knightley going to Mr. Martin) and then the next scene (7:52 when Harriet visits Emma and tells her that Mr. Martin has written a letter. ) DO you think Mr. Knightley has helped him??? (bc in the end he implies that Mr. Martin is still interested in Harriet, so Mr. Knightley kinda has to talk to Mr Martin a lot (about Harriet too) that'd be cute!!

Mr knightly needs to shut it. He calls himself Emma’s friend but doesn’t trust her to make her own decisions

Não gostei desse filme, o protagonista passa a impressão de que está sempre sujo

This scene is an example of what a tool knightly being a tool “I would like to see Emma in love” I’m like, you wanna see her emotionally subjugated. What kind of friend are you?!

I'm just not a fan of this adaptation of "Emma" at all. It's beautiful to look at, but I found the humor too exaggerated and some of the writing choices questionable.

Knightly is such a tool. He mansplains all the time. Like, he calls Emma his friend but doesn’t seem to trust her to make her own decisions. Like in her choice of Harriet as her new bestie. He had something to say about that. He was like “ I’m not liking it, mrs Weston “

To give him some credit, he is older and it is quite natural for him to judge Emma's tendency to find herself a yes woman as a friend. And he does not judge her publicly, only shares his sentiment with their common friend. He later recognizes that Miss Smith is much better than he thought.

I actually think he’s one of the few people in Emma’s life willing (and of equal station) to tell her the truth. He’s known Emma for so many years that he sees her best qualities and her faults. She is only 21 after all and a know-it-all.

@@heidiooohs she’s very confident in herself and yes, it’s sometimes for the wrong reasons. Mr knightly knows her best of most of her friends but still, I can see how it would annoy her to always get told off cuz that’s like 1/4 of their interactions so you can tell knightly has been on her case for a long time

He was keeping her grounded. Obviously he knew a lot more about the world than she. She knew the world from her - very limited by the times she lived in - perspective, e.g. she had no idea how that priest what's his name was behaving when not around the ladies and Knightley did. He was actually the only one who had the guts to tell her the truth even the painful one because he cared about her so much. Not everything a man says to a woman has to be "mansplaining", you know. We can learn from each other since we have a different view of the world.

Mr. Knightley is wise but also he’s kind of irritating ngl which doesn’t help putting his point across lol
